The fact that a locally defined object had the correct distance would seem to imply that there was a data error in your received packet from VK5RR. There's no guarantee the packet had the same bit errors at the I-gate that ported it to the APRS-IS
backbone, as opposed to at your RF station.
Did you look at that Object in the Radio View, or in the Station/Object List??

For what it’s worth, I created an object in the same vicinity as VK5RR and the calculated distance to that object was correct. I’m not sure if that tells us anything about the apparent error that occurred when VK5RR's position was captured on 30M.?
I haven’t heard him in a few days, but I’ll let you know when I do. There were no other VK stations heard that night.
