Thanks for the feedback guys (and Tony)! Paul, Walt would do better to record his tapes and sell them as downloadable audio files - I don't think I have anything that plays cassette tapes any more... Karl, I'll definitely have to go through the patches on this site too. Cheers, John :^P On 16 July 2015 at 04:43, Karl Schmeer shire03@... [xpantastic] <xpantastic@...> wrote:

Bakis - if you haven't already checked, look to see that the Xpander is set to receive "modulation" for Lever 2 on MIDI CC 1, which is the standard CC for tx/rx modulation from an external controller. If you're not familiar with where to check this: 1. go to the"Master" page and select "MIDI".? 2. this will bring you to another menu where you select "CTRLS" 3. on this page you will see "Lever 2". At the bottom you can select which CC "Lever 2" responds to. Make sure it is set to "1" as this is the standard MIDI CC transmitted for modulation . Good luck. -omar --- sent from iPhone

Xpander 'lever 2' problem
Bakis Sirros
hi to all, few days ago, i (my tech actually) restored my xpander with changing the battery, changing all capacitors, in the voice boards and in the PSU. now the xpander, after the autotune, it passes all 5 stages (sometimes, in a voice, the 'Res' tuning fails, but most of the times the autotune procedure works fine with '5 passes'). all 6 voices play fine apart from one problem: the 'lever 2', as modulation source, is not working at all. whenever i put 'lever 2' as a modulation source it does nothing, the lever 2 does not work. so, my modulation wheel does not work at all with the xpander. (btw, i thought that my xpander also had a problem with the lag section, but later i discovered that 'lag' is a standard modulation source in vco1 and vco2. so, now the portamento seems to be working ok.) but what could cause the lever2 problem ?pitchbend (lever1) , velocity, aftertouch, all work fine except 'lever2' (modulation wheel). (of course i have tested my modulation wheel with another synth and the wheel works fine.) thanks in advance for your help. best regards, Bakis. |

I just got a non-working Xpander (that seems to be a Rev. A U.S. made one). After a power supply recap and full cleanup- I'm getting a "Voice Processor Malfunction" warning. FYI- the U.S. made on uses the Hitachi 68B09P. I read another post elsewhere where the user replaced their 68B09EP chip. I assumed the U.S. Model uses the same chip but it doesn't.
It's a REALLY easy fix but you need to be extremely careful. I took the thinnest flathead screwsdriver I could find: you need to be gentle and pop the button cap off (while the pot and processor boards are installed as normal). The flathead tip should easily fit into one side while the button's snug against the opposite edge. You'll have full access to the actual exposed switch assembly once the cap is removed: push it in the opposite direction of the edge the button sticks to using the flathead tip. Pop the top cap on (should line up and snap in easily). Be careful and make sure the flathead won't slip while between the cap and bottom switch assembly before you pry it off. It's actually simpler to do than explain but just make sure the tip doesn't slip and scratch the cap. |

Thanx Tony the pictures help. ? You are right these are the caps I would leave alone. Polypropylene ( I called them polyprop for short)? are one of the few capacitors to have no temperature drift.? They rarely fail. Take a look at the voltage ratings of the polyprop caps in the back of the Xpander service manual.?They are rated for much higher voltages then they would ever encounter in the Xpander?( some are rated for 1000 volts)???? and they are getting harder and harder to come by. There are alternatives but you are talking about big money.??? Also keep in mind these are precise caps used in the?tuning and filter?circuits. Replacing these with a part that is not exacty the same,? would shurly result in tune fails.?Not to mention if the tech forgets to clean the solder rosin off the board. ? The electrolytic caps are really the only type that are going to wear out.?? So imho I would not mess with em. ? ? btw? the little brown bean looking cap ( Cx43)is a mica cap also hard to find and near indestructable ? Best Regards ? Karl ? ? ??? ? Thanks for the info Karl. That battery is the exact same one in my Xpander currently.Looking at the attached picture of my voice board Regarding the polyprop caps- when people recap their voice boards, do they just replace all other caps except these? Looking at the voice board, at the left most voice- are these examples of the polyprop caps C206,C207 (orange, tubular), and C212,213 (blue, rectangular) ? What about C222? I can't tell if it is electrolytic from looking at the
picture. There is a very small number of electrolytic caps in the voice circuits,I will just replace these, but it just seem unusual not to replace the caps that are in abundance (the polypropylene ones) Are? there no substitutes for these? Hi Tony, ? Here is a link to the battery: ? ? ? ? ? All electrolytics will wear out with age. However the ones under the most stress ( ie..? power supply filters )? will?usually fail sooner. ? Ceramics will change their capacitance with age, but its pretty rare to see one fail.??Most of?the ceramics used in the Xpander are bypass caps to keep the power supply lines to the

The voice boards use polyprop caps for setting the VCO's and?VCF's ?frequency.? They don't look anything like an electrolytic. but they are special caps that are hard to find?these adays.? Happy New Year Xpander/M12 owners, For the sake of prevention, I want to replace the battery in my Xpander, as well as the caps on the power supply board. At the moment, the battery looks clean, no signs of leakage. For those who have replaced batteries, would you post the part # and vendor information? Are there any calibration settings that need to be backed up like on the OB-8, or does the battery just back up the patches? C3 is showing signs of deterioration, so I will just replace all of the electrolytic caps (C1, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7,C8, C9,
C15). Do I also need to replace the non-electrolytics (C11, C1C13, etc) ? Do these degrade over time? After I get the battery & power supply overhauled, I'll start on the voice board, and will ask for advice when I get there. I know 1-2 of the voices failed auto tune, and sound a little squarely. I'll disable the good voices so I can focus on these. I know Karl, PeWe and others can diagnose which parts are likely to be bad just from the decryption of the symptoms. There are ceramic & other non-electrolytics on the processor board. Do these need to be replaced? Would you post high quality brands to use for the caps, I'd rather avoid the cheap stuff. Also, preferred vendors would be welcome. I'm OK with Digikey, Jameco, Mouser. If there are other
components that should also be replaced do to degradation with age, please suggest them as well. Thanks for your advice!! Tony |

Thanks all so much for the ideas. I tryed a few things. Reseating the board didn't work because the PCBs screw holes are actually very tight and don't allow for enough movement. I took a razor to the edge of a button's panel hole, but the button is up tight enough to the side that it's difficult to get a decent cut. Also, I slipped and left a small scar on my front panel. :( For my next attempt, I'll try removing the boards entirely and filing the edges away... |
