Weird Xpander Behaviour

Hey there,

My xpander - which I got last year - has started doing odd behaviour, and I just want to float it past you guys to see if it is what I hope it is; or if not, help to narrow it down.

I was using my xpander yesterday, generating kick-ass sounds as normal. Then after about 20 minutes, suddenly the patch name display just filled up with asterisks. The sound engine still worked - and I was able to continue editing my sound. I then went to change the patch at which point the whole thing hung. No sound being produced and the buttons did nothing. I then rebooted it. The thing sprung to life as per normal but no sound was coming out.

I then turned it off and unplugged from mains and left it a while. A couple of hours later I replugged it and turned it on. Booted up but still no sound. After a hunch, I went into the voices page only to find all the voices were set to off -- I turned them on and the xpander was working as it should.

Again, I played with it for about 40 minutes (really addictive synth that it is), and just as I was about to turn it all off, the displays just went blank and the leds went on solidly. I power cycled it, and this time it didn't boot - just stuck with the leds on and no display.

I turned it off and left it about a minute; rebooted and it displayed the message of Resetting the Memory (patches won't be effected). I pressed yes, only for it to again lock with all the LEDs on and no display.

I again unplugged and left it a couple of hours. Coming back, it again showed the Reset the memory display, but this time it then booted. After that, I turned it off and called it a night.

I'm hoping this is a battery issue -- it looks like it's using the original battery and surely that thing has to be dying by now. I opened it up and the caps all look fine. Checking the battery voltage (albeit in circuit), it's at 3.2v - which seems fine, though that is not under load. Reading online, it looks like when the battery dies, it can do all kinds of odd things to the synth; though checking the schematics I'm not totally sure of how this would affect the system once it's booted (and has been running successfully for half an hour or so).

I've ordered a new battery and will check the voltages with the system on later to see what's happening there (I might as well scope it, so I can also check for ripple).

So does this sound like the likely cause? The only other thing I can think of (beyond the diodes around the battery and 5v line dying) is the psu giving spikes or drop outs -- which I'm really hoping it isn't. Mainly as the caps in those things can be pretty nasty. However, it is a Japanese unit and they seem to be known for having shitty PSUs. If it does end up being that (ugh), would just replacing the electrolytics be fine, or should I look at replacing the power supply entirely with a more modern design?

Cheers,

deano

Re: Matrix 12 single patch to multi patch

I think you have the chain mode enabled. Which allows one to sequence the patches, single or multi.

Look in page two of the master page

I am not sure how this has happened
but when I am using my Matrix 12 in the single patch and I
wish to go the the next patch (for example #23 to #24 or
#25), the patch jumps to a multi patch. I can manually go to
#23 or manually enter in #24, #25, #26, etc, but when I use
the + or - on the keypad, it jumps to the
multi-patch.What did I alter to change
this setting?

Matrix 12 single patch to multi patch

Re: Matrix-12 ROM version changes

Interesting. ?My Matrix-12 has worked great for 30 years so I reckon there's no reason to change it.

Oberheim had one location after North Hollywood... ? they were in an industrial park in Commerce just south of downtown LA for a few months before going out of business. ?I wonder where all that equipment went, there were a few Z80 in-circuit emulators, audio spectrum analyzers, etc. ?Many engineering stations.?

I remember seeing stacks of boxes of stuffed Oberheim boards at APEX Surplus in Sun Valley in the early 90's.

Re: Matrix-12 ROM version changes

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

That is the version D board. The 1.6 doesn't add anything. I wouldn't change it unless you are having problems. I could send the files to the group if anyone wants it. There was also a later main board software that I have files for, at work, but I don't know what the changes are specifically. I know if was supposed to fix some MIdI stuff, but I have never seen any documentation. The place I used to work at in LA bought all of the remaining stock from Oberheim when they closed the N Hollywood location. The place where I work now, National Music Centre in Calgary bought all the OB stuff from MusicTek in LA. I keep finding docs I never saw before...?

Where is the board revision located on the PCB? ?My voice boards have "OBERHEIM 1810D" etched on them. ?I couldn't find any other useful marks.

From what you are saying can I glean that I have the latest firmware for my voice boards, because the synthesizer would not work properly with Revision 1.6?

I only see the?Voice Processor Malfunction message when I disconnect the clock signal from the main board to one of the voice boards.

You only want 1.6 if you have rev D voice boards! If you do, it will fix the intermittent Voice Processor Malfunction message. It won't work on earlier revs of the voice board. When they designed the layout of the rev D boards, they made a mistake on the S/H layout. Oops... Version 1.6 was to fix that mistake in software.

loading patches via sysex - Heeellllppppp!

Bought a great Matrix12. Couldn't be happier. However: previous owner messed up patches - so I want to reload original factory patches (single.multi). Have read everything about this...but simply can't get it done. I am using sysex libririan and a ESI M4U midi interface. Would be really greatful for you help! Txxx Jose

Weird issue with saving patches

Hi all! thanks for letting me in the group.

My Xpander has this funny problem that stops me from saving patches to any location with the numbers 8 and 9 in it. When I hold the store button, the ** characters stay in place as opposed to being replaced by the numbers I'm typing. This isn't restricted to patches 80 - 99. 18 and 19 are similarly effected.

It's not a mechanical issue with the keypad as I can use those numbers to load patches. ?

I'm pretty sure it's not a battery or memory issue becuase I am able to dump patches to these locations over sysex.?

The machine is otherwise in good shape, there are no other issues with it that I am aware of. I've performed the usual soft reset, gone through the memory tests in the service page.

Has anyone come across anything like this before? Any ideas on what to check for??

Any help would be much appreciated!

Re: Xpander casette patch specification

Thanks for the offer Karl, but it's not that I really need to do this, it's just a programming exercise.

I've got a cassette dump saved as an audio file so I can try an look for patterns in it.

Hi Tony,

If you really, really want to know, I guess I could drag my M12 into the shop and put
a scope on the output of the cassette out. I could get a general idea of data formats and such.
Through experimentation we could discover the coding. I don't even know if I have a working
casette player anymore:-)

Hello Xpander Users,
Do any of you know if the Xpander (or M12)
cassette patch specification has every been
documented?
I would
like to know the following, at the very least:
1 Where the single patches are
located in a cassette dump?2. Where the multis
are located in a in a cassette dump?3. The
frequencies for a 0 bit, and a 1 bit4. Where the
global data (if any) is located in a cassette
dump?
Any/all
information that has been documented regarding the cassette
patch dump format. I didn't see anything in the service
manual nor the User manual, (nor would I expect that type of
information to be in either manuals)
Online searches didn't find any
documented patch specifications, but that doesn't mean
someone hasn't already done this.
Thanks
Tony

I must have missed that post.
I was listening to a podcast that featured Dan Nigrin of Defective Records. He talked about the MC-202 Hack?project he did many years ago. This gave me the idea to try to decode the Xpander's cassette dump, just as a programming exercise.?
It's not really needed since the Xpander can dump patches via syses, but I thought I would give it a try.

I'm surprised that none has documented the cassette dump info by now though.

Re: Xpander casette patch specification

Hi Tony,

If you really, really want to know, I guess I could drag my M12 into the shop and put
a scope on the output of the cassette out. I could get a general idea of data formats and such.
Through experimentation we could discover the coding. I don't even know if I have a working
casette player anymore:-)

Best Regards

Karl

Hello Xpander Users,
Do any of you know if the Xpander (or M12)
cassette patch specification has every been
documented?
I would
like to know the following, at the very least:
1 Where the single patches are
located in a cassette dump?2. Where the multis
are located in a in a cassette dump?3. The
frequencies for a 0 bit, and a 1 bit4. Where the
global data (if any) is located in a cassette
dump?
Any/all
information that has been documented regarding the cassette
patch dump format. I didn't see anything in the service
manual nor the User manual, (nor would I expect that type of
information to be in either manuals)
Online searches didn't find any
documented patch specifications, but that doesn't mean
someone hasn't already done this.
Thanks
Tony

Re: Xpander casette patch specification

Well, the previous thread on this list (when I asked about Kid Nepro patches) threw up a link to a guy named Walt Whitney selling old patch tapes on eBay. I bought one that turned up a few weeks ago, so I guessed you'd bought one as well. Perhaps not then...

I'm sure this guy could find someone to fix bugs etc. but he'd have to pay them for the work and get them to agree not to distribute the source. Alternatively, he could release the source code to the community and then interested parties could have a look and tackle the work that interested them, with the assistance of others. He's not going to make any money out of that, but at least all the fixes & improvements should be available to all Xpander owners.

My point is that years are passing and the source code (if he still actually has it) isn't providing any benefit to him at the moment. If we (by which I mean you) could ask him to release it to us then there's at least a chance he might get the bugfixes etc. he's looking for. I'm pretty sure he won't just give it away, or he would have done that a long time ago.

Hi Tony,

I guess you bought one of Walt Whitney's patch tapes as well, then? :)

The idea of writing some software to decode the patch audio has crossed my mind as well. The only?accurate?specification of the format of the tape information will be the source code for the Xpander OS itself.

Back in April 2012 you mentioned your friend who had the original Xpander OS source code. If he still has it, could you please ask him to release it to us?

Cheers,

John :^P

Do any of you know if the Xpander (or M12) cassette patch specification has every been documented?

I would like to know the following, at the very least:

2. Where the multis are located in a in a cassette dump?
3. The frequencies for a 0 bit, and a 1 bit

Any/all information that has been documented regarding the cassette patch dump format. I didn't see anything in the service manual nor the User manual, (nor would I expect that type of information to be in either manuals)

Re: Kid Nepro patches - thoughts?

?Of course Walt would do better to sell his patches as downloadable files but then he wouldn't be finding boxes of cassette tapes in his garage or basement that got squirreled away back in the 80s. ?Caveat Emptor as they say.

Thanks for the feedback guys (and Tony)!

Paul, Walt would do better to record his tapes and sell them as downloadable audio files - I don't think I have anything that plays cassette tapes any more...

Karl, I'll definitely have to go through the patches on this site too.

Cheers,

John :^P

Hello list,
The venerable Kid Nepro is still
selling his (her?) Xpander/Matrix 12 patches via eBay[1] -
100 patches for (as little as) $20, that's just 20? per
patch.
Has anyone
tried these patches? Are they worth the money? I imagine
pulling them apart and seeing how they work could be
educational. Obviously the patches you make yourself are the
best ones...
Cheers,
John :^P
