Dual credit input requested

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Friends:

?

Below is an important message from the Oregon Department of Education about an opportunity to comment on possible changes to our dual credit options (high school/college) .? I noticed that the address did not include the TAG community (the ¡°student success plan groups specifically exclude TAG) but at least it was sent to me!

With reference to this discussion, you may also find this news item from the Capital Insider about the financing of dual credit options and its growing popularity of interest:

This document teaches educators and administrators how to explain the new "math pathways" to their community. Federal updates from the NAGC

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

From the NAGC:

Legislative Updates

?

I'm happy to report that the Javits Gifted and Talented Act was level-funded for FY24 at $16.5 million. Given the current divide in Congress and House Republicans' proposal to eliminate all Javits funding, this was the best-case outcome.

?

President Biden released his the other week, which asks for $16.5 million for Javits grants next year as well. Overall, the president's budget request proposes a 4% increase for the Department of Education.

?

The ACE Act was introduced last November and we are still actively asking advocates to contact their Members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor this bill.

?

to CEC's action center to easily contact your legislators and ask them to co-sponsor the ACE Act.

Subject: Community service mistake too many students make

?

?

?

?

Too many students view community service simply as an activity they need to check off for college.

?

And for a majority of students, they check that box by volunteering as a tutor.

?

That's an important contribution, especially if students enjoy teaching.

?

But students should also take the time to find community service more directly related to their interests -- and less common than tutoring.

?

Not only will this make their service more meaningful and interesting to them, it will help them build a resume that will stand out to college admissions readers.

?

Where can students find these opportunities?

?

It's not always easy to get involved in unusual volunteer activities close to home, but there are lots of online opportunities available.

?

Your student can check these out to start!

?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?(NOAA) offers many online citizen-science volunteer opportunities:

?

The Library of Congress is looking for volunteers to help transcribe Library of Congress documents:

?

NASA's Feature Hunter volunteer project is looking for people to label features on photographs taken of earth by astronauts!

?

Scistarter also offers lots of online science volunteer opportunities:

?

?

Zooniverse, offers intriguing options for students interested in a wide range of areas.

?

Here are just a few examples:

?

For students interested in American history:

?

For students interested in ecology:

?

?

For students interested in physics and astronomy:

?

For students interested in linguistics:

?

?

And for those students who truly love tutoring?

?

Schoolhouse.world might be just the ticket!

?

Schoolhouse.world certifies tutors to teach a variety of math subjects. The certification process includes taking a test and then making a video explaining your reasoning.

?

Certified tutors can help students around the world -- and they can list those certifications on their college applications!

?

In fact, the MIT and UChicago application allows students to link their Schoolhouse tutor transcript to show the topics they're certified in, and I expect more colleges to do this in the future.

Re: Rand study on access to advanced math

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thanks for sharing.?

?

I worked for several months when my oldest was in middle school to get the compacted math class into our middle school.? I was finally successful about 3 months into the school year.? The kids in that class had the normal 3-years-in-2-years compacted program but they had only a bit more than 1.5 years to do it.? And they made it work.? They also brought in a few kids who were considered not really advanced enough, and they blossomed with the challenge, including a kid with behavior issues because he was so bored.? I can¡¯t tell you my frustration level when I read that PPS was trying to do away with algebra in middle school.? I¡¯m glad to learn that they rethinking that decision.? It was an important step for my older son, who graduates with a mechanical engineering degree next month, and my younger son, who graduates with a computer science degree this fall.?

"All of this together adds up to poor prospects for narrowing opportunity and excellence gaps in advanced education.
