Sticky My understanding of the X6100

CT2FZI

My understanding of the X6100:

This in not a KX2 or KX3 or a IC-705 and it does not cost $1200 either.

For me its better than a FT-818 and not better than IC-705.

It is a cheap experimental radio and fun to play with. To hack and mod freely. To tinker and maybe to break it while doing it... Did you ever imagined it would be possible to modify the UI accordingly to your taste in a HF rig? Now you can.

It should not be your first radio, it would be better if you spend more, or buy one of the big 3 used.

I rather have the X6100 in one pocket and an efhw in the other and have QSOs in 2 minutes than to spend extra 140USD in a cage and extra 120 in a pelican case and extra 300 in an external ATU [like the IC-705] and be worried about not to scratch any part of its plastic case.

A note about the ATU: I find its internal ATU very adequate to fool the rig on a resonant antenna on the lower [or upper] part of the bands for that matter. Any QRP operator understands that ANY tuner will insert losses, so all the antenas should be resonant. You use internal tuner if you want to work SSB or CW if your antenna is has narrow band, but not far from 1:3 SWR.

When I want to use a random [not so] wire antenna, my ATU-100 sits right at the antenna feed point, and the coax runs from the rig to the tuner. I like it.

Does it worth what you paid for it? YES

Does it compare with your IC-705? Never wanted it to.

Any of the existing bugs prevent you from using the rig? None.

Have I seen a real use case to use WIFI or Bluetooth? None, and for CAT or logging or digi modes it will definitely drain the battery.

Why are you complaining about a radio that you never owned or operated? Don't tell me its because of what you read on the interwebs?!

In the /g/xiegu-x6100 group I never saw anyone complaining, just sharing their observations and wishes of improvements.

Regarding on what can be done with the rig so far, tear down, and what might be done, please subscribe to this great channel "Temporarily Offline Ham Radio": https://www.youtube.com/c/temporarilyoffline

And for your viewing pleasure I invite you to watch this video:

Now go and press the PTT.

Starting to prepare my kit... :)

These antennas will work hand held style, 40m to 6m bands are covered

Must not forget the high performance end fed and the first aid kit...

Excellent set of antennas.? Can I ask where you found the wire winder for the EFHW?

?

Thanks!

?As a neophyte, I have no clue where to get/purchase the antennas pictured in your post. Can you, or anyone else, point me in the direction needed to get some antennas?

Thank you!--

AT hfkits.com or qrpguys.com, or better make your own. I have a MFJ1899t, and others, finally ended up using a simple inverted v dipole with the center raised with an "al Coup" fishing rod or an EF from hfkits, ease of use and good performance.

That’s a big part of why I got mine.? After watching Temporarily Offline I just had to have one.? Plus it’s really cool?

Why, because Folks have discovered the X6100's 'best kept secret'..

IT IS NOT A RADIO!

It is a LInux Computer with a RADIO attached to it! -

"LET THAT SINK IN!"

This means that the Ham Community will now be able to run just about ANY Linux Ham program (Consider ir a RPi3) on it!

Already, some are running WSJTX natively!!! on the X6100 (NO COMPUTER!), completely portable..

Now, do you see its potential?

Really enjoying my X6100 –

?

I got mine – as I’m sure someone will further crack the linux code and get one over to Simon at SDR Console so he can build a profile for it.

I’m thinking more fully developed SDR GUI that you can run like some of the other SDR’s I have that run SDR Console V3….. my ELAD FM DUO, Hermes Lite 2, ANAN-10 and ANAN 7000.

?

And like Terry mentioned – the data app guys are having a blast with it already….

?

My hats off to those who dive right in!!

I'm curious about the actual potential to run "any" Linux program. I read somewhere that it isn't a full Linux system, but rather Busybox, which is a monolithic compiled package of Linux utilities which is often embedded in devices like routers etc. Is this correct? Can anyone clarify whether the 6100 contains a full Linux kernel and all the libraries necessary to run arbitrary Linux apps in the way an r.pi can? Or would you need to modify the app and rebuild it as part of Busybox?

Thx. Anthony - KK7IXU

The X6100 runs a "full" linux operating system. Busybox is a way to save some disk space by having a single executable change the way it runs based on the command line name used to call it, but it just substitutes for a bunch of command line utilities. Even busybox needs the linux kernel and such.

It can run arbitrary linux apps with the limitation that we do not have the source code or build environment for their build of the firmware, so if any kernel options are disabled or any shared libraries are not installed, then you're going to have to cross-compile for the ARM architecture and kernel source that the radio runs. But that's not specific to the radio - that's just embedded linux in general.

There is a full, from-scratch way to build a linux distro with just the parts you need, called "buildroot" and one user has created a barebones buildroot configuration that boots on the X6100:?t
A couple of users reverse-engineered a display driver for the LCD, as that was the only hardware component that doesn't have an open source driver in the mainline Linux kernel already.

There's also a distro of Arm linux called "Armbian" and another user has build Armbian for the X6100 (), but had to copy over the kernel and bootloader from the original firmware to get it to work. But this build is a more full-featured linux with a display manager and pre-installed apps, etc. This already has WSJT-X and fldigi installed on it, and you *can* run those things RIGHT ON THE RADIO! But you have to connect the two USB-C ports, as there is some funky audio routing that hasn't been figured out yet.

And you've by now seen the early release of the new UI/firmware - this work is based on the buildroot framework, and then he's writing the GUI on top of that as a regular linux app.

There are two options. 1) using the buildroot of the required version, build almost any software that you need specifically for the standard system image. But here it is impossible to build a kernel or drivers for it - because the sources are closed. And here comes option 2) Completely assemble your system. With its own kernel, all drivers and rootfs. This is already possible and is being done.?This is the way I make my entire firmware

With sound, everything is just clear.

Yes, I was meaning only for the Armbian image by Links2004.

Technically incorrect: Xiegu is obligated under the terms of the GPL to release source. That they do not is illegal, and violates the copyright of every Linux kernel developer.

Of course! There are quite a few license violations in this product. Not only the kernel breaks it. For example, the application uses Alsa, FFTW and many other libraries with the LGPL.

If you take a look at the "Quadra" (Inovato.com) this will give you an idea as to what's under the X6100 hood - basically its a RPi3!
This is not true! RPi3 uses Broadcom BCM2837 and X6100 uses Allwinner R16. Of course, these are two ARM processors, but the similarity ends there (;
