Re: Power - Voltage too high ? #dc-power

There was a thread on the group awhile back about charging voltage.? The thread related primarily to the fact that the higher the charge voltage the more heat was generated within the radio while charging the internal battery.? Many of us purchased a DROK voltage limiter and set a lower voltage.? This does help with the temperature.? My power supply puts out 13.6vdc, but on my X6100 the voltage showed 13.8-13.9vdc.? I adjusted my DROK to 10vdc for charging some chose other voltage settings.? While the issue was regarding internal heat buildup you may consider using a DROK to be sure that the maximum voltage is not exceeded.

There are dire warnings in the Xiegu manual not to supply more 15 volts and, of course, 14.4 is less than 15.

This still feels a little close to the operational limit.

My questiosn are :-

  • Is anyone else out there using the X6100 / KX33 combo ?
  • Are you seeing 14.4 volts or more on the display (i.e is this normal) ?
  • Should I be concerned about running this close the max ?

Re: Speaker Port

Yes you must use a TRS plug even with a mono speaker.

Re: Power - Voltage too high ?

I generally run my X6100 off of 12V and I have found that when operating CW for an extended time period it will be slightly warm to the touch.?

As has been discussed before on this forum, the internal battery is only in the 8 to 9v range so running the rig off of an external voltage significantly higher than that
means that the internal voltage regulator in the radio has to dissipate the extra as heat. As we know the one thing that kills lithium batteries is excess heat so it is best to drop that
excess voltage outside the rig to avoid overheating and reducing the life of the internal battery.?

Re: R1CBU Audio quality

I don't think that you are crazy. I have been thinking the same thing since I started using the R1CBU firmware. To my ear the receive audio sounds much better with the rig running Oleg's firmware, especially on CW.?

I hear a lot less birdies tuning across the band too. I also really like the "cleaner" interface that Oleg has implemented. I am a big believer in "less being more". There are still some "anomalies" on the waterfall with the R1CBU firmware but I generally don't hear anything when I tune past them.??

Sorry, OM. You have discovered a major shortcoming in the x6100.?

Re: Power - Voltage too high ?

Geoff,

The X6100 has well documented overheating issues, and many have concluded that reducing the power supply to 9 volts, give or take, is the best strategy. I have operated mine as a mobile rig and have encountered several overheating lockups at 13.8V. Keep in mind the guidance to turn charging off. Still, mine will get stuck in transmit mode until I take it apart and disconnect the battery. It happened again last week. I operate 5W CW exclusively, so I am definitely not overdriving it.?

This rig operates natively from a pair of 3.7V cells, so it appears 8-9V will be more than adequate. Others have taken temperature and current measurements that confirm the 9V figure. Any additional voltage will merely generate heat.

I am prepping a buck/boost board to limit the power in the car. For now, my QCX20 is the mobile rig until I get an enclosure and associated wiring done for the board.?

Bonjour Scot

Find images of the radio.

when I compare the images

why is missing a (coil or capacitor) close to the coil and the 4700 resistor and the ldmos output

Real,?
No problem, I found the thermistor on the battery side (see photo).

I measures the voltage of the centre pin (Vout) at ~12oC and it was ~ 0.63V ... The supply to the Vin was 5V. I wamed the thermistor slightly and it changed to 0.67V - so it does work to some amount.

I read that the temperature coefficient of the thermistor is 10mV per oC so, at 12/13oC the coefficient would be 13X0.01V = 0.13. The 0oC Vout is 0.5V ... So... 0.5V + 0.13V = 0.63V ... this indicates to me that the thermistor is probably 100% working correctly.

Tonight I will check more scientifically and study the document of MC9700 and try to work out if the voltage at this temperature is correct or not but from the above it would appear to be fine.?
?
Thank you for this valuable information Real! I had no idea the radio had this.

Re: EMPTY RED Battery icon after charge.

I am a bit lat to this discussion, but after latest firmware upgrade my battery seems to behave correctly, it charges to 8.2-3V and lasts, and shuts down, as expected at about 7,2V.
However, when being charged the green light is NOT flashing, but stays always on. The display shows the charing symbol.

Charging with included charging adapter,?

I? know where the code is. I asked for building instructions. I can then build it myself and check for missing parts and all.?

Last time I checked (don't do that every day) it ws not there and certainly the conversations here don't give the feeling
that it will be generated/given.?
