Check in System Profiler -> Software -> Applications whether your XEphem version is a PPC binary. If it is, it won't run on Lion, period, because Apple removed the Rosetta emulation. I've got 3.6.3

The library might be in /usr/lib64. You do need Motif or Lesstif in your libraries. I can't give advice on the best way to update your libraries because I'm not familiar with your particular linux
