Xcat vrs Raspberry Pi Pico
Just to give you an idea of physical aspects of our new projects ... here's an legacy Xcat next to a Raspberry Pi Pico. Maybe it will still be a plug in board after all ... we will see. 73's Skip WB6YMH

2K, 4K or 8K EEPROM support for the X9000 ? 8
If we support an 8K EEPROM on the X9000 and we don't have enough pins left to do Doug Hall, or CI-V. Do we really need 8K support ? If we only support 4K then we will have 2 pins left that we can use. If we only support 2K then we will have 3 pins left over. I'm assuming that if the radio has a 8K EEPROM we need the entire 8K and can't just cheat and only support 1/2 of it. Of course we could change the EPROM but... What's most common in the "market"? 73's Skip WB6YMH

Xcat NG rev A 5
Skip, You're _way_ better at this than I am. Questions to help me understand the magic: 1. You'd mentioned SN74LVCH8T245 bus transceiver / level shifter chips. You did this circuit with SN74LV244APWR instead because the address lines are always outputs, and the data always inputs, and you don't need bidirectional translation, right? 2. You only have pull-ups on the address lines. This is because the outputs need to be lifted, but for the inputs, the '244 chips are 5V tolerant? 3. You don't have pull-ups on A8 and A9, Mode 6, or COS. Pretty sure I don't understand this. 4. We're getting 3V3 from the RPi? 5. The 'LV244 doesn't seem to be available in DIP? Thanks for all of your effort! De

Xcat NG rev A
I've attached the first cut of a schematic for a possible Xcat NG for the original X. With the appropriate firmware it will retain all of the features of the legacy Xcat. Changes: 1. Doug Hall UF outputs are now optionally provided by an I2C port expander. (For example of of these https://www.amazon.com/MCP23017-Interface-Extension-Converter-Arduino/dp/B07TBRKX4N/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=mcp23017&qid=1660313859&sr=8-2) 2. The CI-V interface now uses 5 volt levels rather than RS-232. Additionally a true single wire CI-V interface can be created by simply tying the CI-V rx and tx line together. 3. The PCB will probably need use a ribbon cable to connect to the code plug connector rather than just plugging into it for mechanical reasons (TBD). This project will only move forward if there's enough interest from the group to make it worthwhile. Comments please! 73's Skip WB6YMH

XCat NG changes 19
Wow, we got a lot of functionality from that lowly 16F874 PIC "back in the day". Once I got down to actually assigning GPIO lines I realized that the RPI Pico really doesn't have as many GPIOs as I would like. It's "enough", but just barely. I've summarized the GPIO usage and limitations in the Wiki in the new Xcat NG hardware repo (https://github.com/skiphansen/xcat_ng_hw/wiki/Hardware-description). Please have a look and let me know your comments. p.s. I find the github wiki much easier to use than the groups.io wiki (probably because I've used it before) which why a new URL. p.p.s I link the name Xcat NG better than Xcat-2022 which will look silly in 2030 (grin). 73's Skip WB6YMH

Has anyone fully decoded the X9000 memory mapping? 332
Being the X9000s are still plentiful and I have a few I would be interested in working on a similar type of device for them. I started working on figuring out the memory mapping and another individual sent me some info he figured out but there is still quite a bit left to be figured out. This makes me wonder if anyone has a source for decoding what all the various bits do.

Xcat-2022 proposal 21
I'm going to make a bizarre proposal. Let's redo the Xcat using the Pi Pico as a stepping stone to the X9000. We already know everything we need to know about the X and electrically it has the same issues as the X9000 (5 volt logic levels). The RP2040-Zero form factor (https://www.waveshare.com/rp2040-zero.htm) as castellated module would be ideal for a DIY project. The module would just solder on to a custom board we'd design. With Kicad and the cheap and fast low quantity PCB houses suchj as JLCPCB we have now a small run of PCBs is cheaper than a burger. I'll commit to doing the code. I've already ordered 3 modules. Is there anyone in the group that'll commit to doing the PCB? Once it's working on the X the same code base can be updated to work with the X9000 once it has given up its mysteries. 73's Skip WB6YMH

Spectra RSS success w/ Win98 and 400 Mhz Celeron! 4
Well it took a week of raiding my garage for old PCs, but I **FINALLY** got RSS for the Spectra to run successfully. The PC is an old surplus box that I bought probably 20 years ago at the TRW swap meet for $35. It ran Linux 24/7 as my repeater controller & Echolink box running my thelinkbox software for at least 5 years. It hasn't been turned on for 12 years, but it worked when I tried earlier in the week. Yesterday I installed a "fresh" copy of Windows 95 second edition and RSS. Shock of shocks RSS reads my code plug successfully ! Of course a Spectra is newer than the Syntor X9000 so I don't know if this box will run the X9000's RSS or not. 73's Skip

source for Xcat PC control program
For whatever it's worth and for whoever is interested I put the source for the Windoze control program on github. https://github.com/skiphansen/xcat_pc If anyone rebuilds it using tools from this century I've be interested in hearing about it!. I'm currently controlling my Xcat from Windows 7 using an USB serial port. It worked the first time! This is the first time I've tried the Xcat with anything more recent than XP. 73's Skip WB6YMH

Status of new Xcat boards 13
I'm happily surprised there is still interest in the Xcats it was a fun and challenging project. I spoke to Lee yesterday and he's still working on a final batch of boards. This has been in process for quite some time but he still intends to finish them ASAP. Lee has had his money tired up in PCBs and components for this batch for several years now. I'll let the list know when the status changes. I know I have 4 Xcats in my garage somewhere, but I've been unable to find them. When I do I'll put them on ebay and announce the announce the auction here. 73's Skip WB6YMH

FREE SyntorX radios
I have a large quantity of approx. 30 VHF SyntorX radios, believed to all be T73/T83 models, along with wiring harnesses, controls heads (in various configurations), speakers, mics., etc. All are FREE but must picked picked up in the Daytona Beach FL area no later than June 7, 2020. No exceptions to that, I will not ship or deliver. These radios were pulls from local police, fire and other city departments so the majority should be in working condition. I also have a number of Syntor drawers (not SyntorX), some control cables, etc., but little if any control heads. If interested, please email me at dbrock411@.... No catches, no gimmicks, I'm giving them all away, conditioned on them being picked up no later than June 7th!
