I was enjoying operating the ARRL SSB DX Contest this weekend, but when I fired up the rig this morning, 20 meters was completely wiped out by RFI. Luckily, the noise level was lower on 15 and 10 meters, and I was able to make some contacts. This also happened during the CW contest a couple weeks ago. RG&E still has not contacted me, and it has been just about 2 months, so I have drafted a letter and will be sending it via registered mail on Monday. I also filed a complaint with the FCC, which I probably should have done immediately. I did get to test out my ultrasonic detector a bit today. It had been so cold, snowy and windy on the days it was present, that I hadn't been able to try it out. Today was cold and windy, and it started to snow just as I went out, but confirmed the pole that the noise was emanating from. I was not able to pinpoint the faulty hardware, which I guess is sometimes possible. It was definitely at the top of the pole, likely either a lightning arrestor or insulator. It's 8PM and 10 and 15 are dying, and 20 meters is unusable for me, so I will have to try 40 and 80 tonight, though my 80 meter EFHW has been compromised somewhat by this winter's winds. This contest is a little weird, as DX stations can only work USA and Canada, so it tends to be mostly Europe, South America and the Carribean, but 10 meters should be hopping tomorrow AM if you want to work a lot of DX. The exchange is signal report and state for US, and signal report and power for DX stations. Easy exchange! I operated the CW DX Contest again this year. I wanted to beat my 175 contacts last year, and just barely did, with 178 and 103 multipliers. Fortunately, the Daytona 500 was rain-delayed, or I wouldn't have been able to have enough time. If I compared my logs from last year to this year, I'd guess most of my contacts were with the same stations I worked last year. Contesting in these big ones is a little weird, with many stations being essentially professional contesters and automating most everything. With N1MM you really don't have to touch your key or paddle. One button or click sends your callsign, another one sends your exchange. But it is still kind of fun, but I will probably just occasionally dabble in contests. And I heard a weak K2OID, from GA? I have made a couple of videos of the RFI I am experiencing, if anyone is interested. https://photos.app.goo.gl/fGV7qd5N1EvJ6Xtx5 I shared these with W4DD, who has experienced this issue and helped others. He agrees that it looks like power line HV arcing. I am hoping to track it down to a pole before I call RG&E. There was a guy from RG&E who gave a presentation at RARA, maybe 15 years or so ago. Unfortunately, it is not on RARAs website. That would have been nice to re-view. -Brian

Just wondering if anyone has any tools/tips for hunting RFI. Lately I have noticed S9 noise levels on some bands, though the noise appears to be very wide-banded. It is quite evident in the spectrum display when it is present, and seems to cover hf to 6 meters, but worst around the 10Mhz band. It will to last for hours and then maybe go away for hours, but when it is present, it will occasionally stop for a few seconds and then start back up. I seems likely to be a power line arcing issue. On my AM car radio, it seems to be worse both east and west of my house for maybe a ? to ? of a mile. Hard to know for sure, as I only have the sound to judge.
