Note: Radio Lunch Location -- Landmark in Country Club Plaza -- Thursday 1/16/2020
Greetings, I am sending this message to both the XARC Yahoogroups and the new [email protected]. In the future I will drop the Yahoo group. I understand that the Yahoo groups are being deleted. So, please sign up at groups.io website and search for XARC, if you want to receive XARC messages. This week we will continue to meet at the Landmark Family Restaurant in the Country Club Plaza in East Rochester -- just down from Wegmans and across from Hoselton Chevrolet. We are getting 6-8 folks each week -- some of whom we have not seen in quite a while, plus some new faces! Plan to arrive a bit early so as to get a table for six or more in the back of the restaurant. Details: Date: 16 Jan 2020 Time: about noon Location: Landmark Family Restaurant 825 Fariport Rd. East Rochester, NY 14445 View Photos and menu See you there... Regards, Ned, W2NED 585 734-1984

XARC January Newsletter
de K2AS I wanted to get in the habit in sending out a monthly newsletter again. It has been a while since we've done one. With the email list, website, and Facebook page, there are other ways of communicating this type of info. The website and Facebook page don't seem to get a lot of views from members, so I thought I would just use the email list and catch members up on the club happenings, especially for those who can't make the meetings. Yes, we have club meeting minutes, but they also probably realistically don't get looked at much. People seem to like a push rather than pull. This isn't going to be a fancy or long newsletter with articles and content someone is going to have to come up with every month. It will likely just be informational about club events, recent meeting re-cap, new members, and other ham radio related activites we might pass on. I want to keep it simple, so no PDFs or attachments to open just to read. I do have some html formatting, and a few inline images. Hopefully it looks OK on various devices. We probably could do a PDF if helpful. Contributions for the newsletter are welcomed (news, events, etc). I will shoot for the 20th of the month or so. ?E-Mail List ?Hopefully everyone is aware of the change to 开云体育. Less than half of the subscibers to yahoogroups.com have accepted the invitation, though probably half were previous or non-members. It will go away soon. This should be the only time I will send out a newletter to both DLs. There were a few hiccups getting it going, but hopefully that is past. Here is info: Group Email Addresses Post: [email protected] Subscribe: [email protected] Unsubscribe: [email protected] Group Owner: [email protected] Help: [email protected] Club Treasury There have been no significant changes to the treasury in the past month. Details are in the Members section of the website. Club Repeaters ?The 2 meter machine is operating normally. No word from Yaesu yet on the trade-in of the 2 meter machine. They say they are backlogged and will get to applications as they work thru them. The 440 (444.825) machine is operating as far as I know. Coverage is poor to the east of North Chili. Last time I spoke to Dave, N2OA, I mentioned that if we could do a checkout of the antenna system/duplexer at some point to ensure it isn't a hardware issue. We have restarted the Thursday night 2 meter nets. 8PM on the 2 meter machine. No net on meeting nights. Sunday evenings at 8PM the repeater is usually linked up for the Southern Tier Fusion Net. Digital only. If you have a fusion radio, check-in and say hi Other January Meeting Notes I think I remember 9 attendees (+/-1). Steve KA1CNF indicated that the Drumlins ARC would like to put on a Fox Hunt, and wondered if we would be willing to help them. The concenus was yes, but if they wanted to use the transmitters that we use, we would have to check with the owners (W2NED, W2VAB, and possibly WO2P). During the meeting, we discussed content of the club meetings. Some suggested possibly shortening or eliminating the business portion of the meeting. We could do this probably within the bounds of the club bylaws with buy-in from the members while still having transparency. We might need to have more consistent board meetings, but we probably should anyway. There also was a request to move the meeting start time to 6:30 PM to allow time for folks who want to have dinner at home. We may send out a poll on this one. We also would need help from members. I think we all would like more quality presentations. We usually have a handful of presenters, which maybe is not so bad, but I think we have run out of ideas for things we haven't already done. We also could make the meeting more social, but again some help from members would be welcome. What new segments can we add? Some of these we tried, but had little traction: Club Contests Projects Short videos < 15 min Dinner one month instead of meeting Around the table - show and tell - maybe emphasize this some more. Others? I may have forgot something from the meeting, as I didn

Re-test of 6M Omni Angle 3
During the presentation of the NanoVNA last night, the group noticed that the VSWR plots of the 6M antennas didn't look right (i.e. too good) and we speculated that I might have generated the graphs without calibrating the unit generating the plots. So today I reran the VSWR plots with an un-calibrated unit, two calibrated units and then tested the antenna with an old MFJ 259B. The results (graphical comparison at the bottom of the spreadsheet). The uncalibrated NanoVNA gave results that were similar to what we saw on the presentation slides (too good). After calibrations (unit 1 with a 10 sweep average, unit 2 with 1 sweep), the VSWR curve looks like we would expect for the Omni Angle outside of the 6M band. The two NanoVNAs were very close in their measurements, the minor differences most likely being due to the single sweep results versus the average of 10 sweeps. The MFJ 259B is directionally consistent with the NanoVNAs but tends to understate the VSWR as frequencies move away from resonance; or the MFJ is right and the 2 NanoVNAs are wrong. Anyway, if you are interested have a look at the data and the graph. Please let the group know if you have any observations or comments. Harry W KF2TV

2 free computers 4
Before I take these working computers to Staples for recycling I wanted to check to see if anyone wanted them - pictures are attached. The first is a working Gateway 15.6" laptop with an Intel i3 processor, 320 GB HD, 4 MG RAM, blueray disk drive and webcam. It is running Windows 7 Home Premium and has MS Office installed. It works fine but I don't need it. The second is a Dell inspiron 530S tower only with Windows Vista 32bit OS, 3MB RAM, 1.6 Ghz dual core processor. It works fine too. Let me know if you have a good home for either of these working machines. I will leave all the relevant software intact and delete the personal stuff. If I don't hear from anyone soon I will offer it to other clubs. Harry Williams KF2TV
