Winlink VARA
3
During field day I was asked to use the VHF / Digital station for Winlink email messages. I had absolutely no experience with it and failed wide open. My favorite teacher (YouTube) has been helping me and I am getting ready to create my account and set it up. My question is about VARA FM and HF. I overheard that the connection speed was very slow. It seems that the slow connection may be a result of the free version. I am more than willing to buy the full software. What I don't know is if the gateways in our area support the full version so I can get the full speed if I buy the license? Also does anyone know if VARA FM and VARA HF are covered by the same license or do I need to buy different ones. Thanks, Jarred

pumpkin patrol jamming
2
the pumpkin patrol team had a real problem with a jammer last year. They are working on methods to work around him, but they could use help in tracking him down. If you want to help with direction finding on halloween (I think it's a 2 night assignment) I'll let you know more details later. I tried a little DF and it wasn't easy, but still fun trying. What to Bring to Field Day
Folks, Attached is a resend of the checklist for everyone to consider bringing to FD. If you have anything useful but not on the list, please just bring it. It's looking like this year's FD is going to be a wet one, so come prepared for some rain. Fortunately there is a shelter on site that has plenty of room, so staying dry should not be a major problem. Wire antenna set up is Friday, June 23 at 10:00 AM. The triband yagi, rigs, logging network, and power distribution are planned to be set up Saturday morning starting at 10:00AM. The contest itself runs from 2:00 PM Saturday to 2:00 PM Sunday. Take down begins at 2:00 PM Sunday and should be complete by 4:00 PM. All are welcome to our Field Day. I hope you will join us for all or part of the weekend. 73, Bob Karz, K2OID 585 729-5308 -- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG antivirus software. www.avg.com

Field Day info and preliminary check list
4
Everyone, Our joint XRX/ARES Radio Clubs Field Day 2023 is next Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25. This year we will again be at the lower soccer fields at Kent Park in Webster. Wire antenna set up will be Friday, June 23. The triband yagi, rigs, logging network, and power distribution will be set up Saturday morning starting at 10:00AM. The contest itself runs from 2:00 PM Saturday to 2:00 PM Sunday. Take down begins at 2:00 PM Sunday and should be complete by 4:00 PM. We need a few volunteers to help set up wire antennas Friday. If you can help, please let me know what times you are available. We plan to assign 2 to 3 people to set up each wire antenna. It typically will take about 1 to 2 hours. Please let me know if you can help with Saturday morning equipment/tribander set up or Sunday take down as well. I have already contacted several of us to bring specific items (e.g. antennas, rigs, generators, laptops for logging). I will be sending out confirmations in the next day or two. Attached is a preliminary check list for everyone to consider bringing. All are welcome to our Field Day. I hope you can join us. 73, Bob Karz, K2OID 585 729-5308 Virus-free.www.avg.com

XARC History
5
Hello Folks, As part of my effort to document our club, I added a post on our website about our involvement in the Rochester Cup, and subsequently winning the ARRL Gavel for the 1993 Medium Club category in the January 1993 VHF Sweepstakes. A lot of club members participated to make it happen, but it is nice to reflect on this achievement 30 years later. Stan Avery WM3D was our high scorer, which was a bit of a surprise to me, though I admit I didn't really know Stan. http://xarc.us/2023/06/the-rochester-cup-and-arrl-gavel/ and you can easily get to it on the home page: http://xarc.us My memory is limited, but if others wish to add to this story, it would be great. One can comment on the Post, but you need to login. If you were registered at one time, but don't know password, try the forgot password links. If you were never registered, try to register. Or you can email me your comments and I will get them in somehow. WordPress is the website/blogging software we use, so don't be surprised to see that popup, as they handle all of the authentication for the website. - Brian

Monroe County ARES is helping us out again with a GOTA station, if you know any young and/or new hams, bring them by! No official meetings in July or August, but we may plan a lunch at a park in one of those months, stay tuned. Read about XARCs first Field Day here - http://xarc.us/2023/06/xarcs-first-field-day-1981 and maybe read a few other musings from myself if you are interested, just go to our web page http://xarc.us Still looking for some other members to write some posts, see the article "How to Author a Post/Article" here - http://xarc.us/2023/01/how-to-author-a-post-article/ . It can be anything ham radio related. If you can't sign in, don't worry, we can get it fixed. Contact me. If you haven't seen my email to the RARA group, we have started a new email list for System Fusion in the Rochester area. If you are interested, go to /g/WNYFusion to sign up. Hope to see you in September, if not Field Day or a TBD picnic. 73, Brian

Bandpass Filters for Field Day
4
Before looking at possibly buying, I wanted to check if any club members have any bandpass filters for 80, 40, 20, 15, or 10 meters. If so, would you be willing to allow the club to borrow for Field Day? If so, send me an email, let me know what band bandpass filter you have, and maker/model number if possible (unless homebrew). -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS
