Vince,

Hopefully RG&E gets here that quick, but I doubt it.? Air Force probably gets a bit more attention than me.? I have narrowed it down to two poles.? #354 and #352, and I think both of them have a problem.? #354 is worse.? They are just west of Parson Acres.? Drive by with your AM radio on an empty frequency.

I've read that bad lightning arrestors are usually the main culprit, with bad insulators another possible cause.? Rarely it might be arcing to some other metal such as bolts and staples.

RG&E no longer has any info on reporting these issues on their website.? Even when you call the number that says "Talk to a Representative", you get to listen to a series of menu prompts about gas emergencies, power outages and paying your bill.? When I finally got to a person after the fourth menu, they told me I picked the wrong one.? It apparently is in the queue of some mystery department that has no phone?number.

My Story:

During the mid sixties while I was stationed at Lockport Air Force Station, we had some serious noise problems at our GATR (ground to air transmitter receiver) site—I believe we had 20 channels of UHF equipment remoted to Fort Custer AFS in Michigan.? I think it took us a week to sort everything out and got Niagara Mohawk to replace an arcing lightning arrester on one of the power poles to our site.? Of course, at the time everyone was blaming us for not properly maintaining our equipment… LOL

RFI Mapper Image

开云体育

This is a map generated by the RFI Mapper program by W4DD.? I used my Yaesu FT-857, a cheap GPS unit, and a CAT cable connected to a laptop as I drove around my neighborhood.? This was my first attempt.? The FT-857 only has 10dB increments over S-9, so anywhere there is a black marker, it is at least 10dB over S-9, but not 20dB.

I measured on 10 meters, AM mode, Fast AGC, no noise reduction switched on.? The color legend on the left corresponds to S meter readings.? The blue marker near the center is my QTH.? The other blue marker slightly to left is my initial suspect power pole. ? There were a few dropouts while I was driving which may be responsible for a couple of anomalies.? I still need to do some more work pinpointing the source.? Many private roads and driveways in this area that I haven't looked at yet.? Most have power poles.

Re: RFI Videos

Back in the 60's my father, WA8ZMS, and I ,WA8NZQ, had an RF problem that was corrected with a new transformer on the pole near our house.

I have made a couple of videos of the RFI I am experiencing, if anyone is interested.

I shared these with W4DD, who has experienced this issue and helped others. He agrees that it looks like power line HV arcing. I am hoping to track it down to a pole before I call RG&E.

There was a guy from RG&E who gave a presentation at RARA, maybe 15 years or so ago. Unfortunately, it is not on RARAs website. That would have been nice to re-view.

Re: Hunting Down RFI

Thanks for the offer, I'll let you know.

It is interesting to watch my spectrum display, sometimes the intensity of the display will lower, but signal still at S-9.? Then occasionally it will suddenly go quiet and s meter will start to drop, then immediately start up again.? The way I see the display fluctuate pointed me to a power pole issue.

I put my FT-857 back in the car and drove down the road and saw a definite peak about a quarter mile west, monitoring 20 meters with a hamstick on the roof of the car.? I tried my HT at 136.7500 AM, walked down the road to that area, and using my Arrow 2 meter yagi, found a peak on a pole.? Strangely, it was not a pole with 14KV, but just a Ginna warning siren pole.? But it peaked pointing right at the control box mounted on the side.? They do have a small vertical higher up, so there may be a transmitter in there, but not peaking where the antenna is higher up.

So not sure if the s meter peak I'm seeing is the noise or some other RF.? The audio is definitely noisy there, and the area where it peaked with the FT-857 whilst driving by.? HF might be better if I can get a loop or something directional.

I watched W4DD's video presentation.? His RFI Mapper looks interesting.? If I can get that working with my 857 easily, I might try it.? I might also throw together a 3 element yagi for 137MHz.

I can't find a specific number at RGE to report RFI, so I'll probably wait until Monday to get a real person.

It will to last for hours and then maybe go away for hours, but when it is present, it will occasionally stop for a few seconds and then start back up.? I seems likely to be a power line arcing issue.

On my AM car radio, it seems to be worse both east and west of my house for maybe a ? to ? of a mile.? Hard to know for sure, as I only have the sound to judge.

I did try walking around with a HT at 137Mhz AM and a 2 meter 3 el yagi, but not much luck, or I didn't go far enough.

Just a reminder, we are having a meeting at 7PM this Thursday, Dec. 12, at Webster Rec Center.

We'll catch up on a tiny bit of club business, then see what everyone has been doing.

I still have a FT8 DXing Presentation I never got a chance to present, it needs a bit of updating, so I will try to get than done by meeting time.

Zoom is TBD.? If I can make it happen, will send the link and info sometime before the meeting.
