You should heat it with a torch before welding to help stabilize the metal. John '56 Pickup TKER TOY Graham, Wash.

开云体育And afterward to cool slowly. If it is not in a bad place, it could be brazed easier than welded, but you would have to get the crack area red hot for the brass to bond. Barrett? Pruit

开云体育I don’t know where you are located. I have a case you could have. I’m in Wisconsin. To properly weld cast it must be heated first, welded with nickel rod and allowed to cool slowly. We used to put it in a drum of vermiculite overnight to cool.?Good luck. Richard? On Mar 17, 2021, at 5:50 PM, Pruit Ginsberg via groups.io <pruitg@...> wrote:

开云体育Marc,
Can you post a few pictures of where it is cracked? Lock-n-stitch makes some great cast iron repair options. And none of the risks that come with welding.

Before welding the crack needs to be deep "V'ed" to get down to clean metal. Cast iron has a coating that doesn't weld very well. After grinding the case should be heated to 500+ degrees in an oven or with a torch in the area of the crack. If the crack is in the mounting flange it would be a good idea to bolt it to a steel plate to keep warpage to a minimum. Good luck. John '56 Pickup TKER TOY Graham, Wash.

开云体育Hi Richard...? you know... ya think that just might be the way to go??? Would you need to know the diameter of the middle shaft? Because I heard someplace in all my calls today something about the case being interchangeable and I'd need to know that stationary shaft's diameter. What would you be asking price wise? Im in Los Angeles so add shipping on top. Sent from beautiful Bessemer City

? Just to circle back… Had a ton of work just done with transmission and transfer case. Turns out the both the $%$*#!@ mechanics that worked on it previously were more tinker toy scam mechanics than anything.? Lots of $$$4 lost :( ? Los Angeles is nothing but scum, bums, actor wanna bes and homeless. God I need outta here. </rant> ? But thought this might be appreciated. Me and my current old school mechanic decided electric orange might be nice ---LOL. Flashy ay? |

Clearly, you've had some bad luck with your transmission. Yes, I have a T90 and D18 T-case you could have but live much too far away during this pandemic to be of use.
Permit me to give a little assurance... there are good people, even competent mechanics out there, but they are very old, and far between now. Herm-the-Overdrive- Guy does good work but he's in Washington State, a thousand miles from LA. I've found that I can do much of the mechanical work myself, but it takes a very long time - do the pictures indicate you have a useable transmission now? I'm sure you know that we are approaching the end of an era with these old vehicles - there's plenty of problems with the new designs of course (my son is trying to source a replacement battery for his Leaf... Nissan doesn't want to sell replacements and so one has to "scrounge"). All the best of luck. Pavel up north. |
