Hybrid temperature sensor

The temperature gauge on our '65 wagon was always reading high for a relatively normal engine temperature.? I changed the sensor for a new one but the gauge read the same.?
I read somewhere that a Mustang sensor gives lower gauge readings but unfortunately the Mustang sensor is smaller and so would need an adapter.? Yet another COVID project dawned on me... what about fitting a Mustang sensor into the larger Willys "barrel"?? I have no idea how these sensors work - they seem to be very simple, consisting of a spring inside the brass housing.?
The pictures show the Mustang unit and opened Willys counterpart. Then internal threading of the Willys part; assembly and finally the use of a copper washer to seal the two components together.

The gauge now reads slightly lower.

Cheers, Pavel up North.

So what is the p/n of the mustang part?

Thanks Bob, but do these fixes usually work?

Pruit,? I can't find the invoice for the Mustang sensor in my records *** and its not archived in Amazon or Ebay.? On Rockauto, 1965 Mustangs with the 6 cylinder engines show a change at the 9th month of 1965.? I think the one I used was the early one (smaller) up to the 9th month. If this is correct, the number is WVE 1T1010.? But don't trust my memory, I don't anymore!

*** you'd think the age old ploy of "losing" bills and invoices as a method to fool oneself (or the Mrs.) into pretending repair costs are lower, would involve bigger ticket items (new suspension, or an engine), not a measly $12 item.

I think that it would be easier to use a 1/4" npt to 1/8" npt reducer. Also being pipe threads the cooper washer might not be needed.? Just my thoughts and I will give it a try when I change my antifreeze and go to a 180 degree thermostat.

Ted, if memory serves, when I was tapping into the Willys sender body, I got overly enthusiastic and went in too far.? Then the smaller sensor "bottomed out" before the threads were tight enough... hence the copper washer.? The idea of using an available adapter/reducer would have been logical... but using something from our mythical basement inventory of used auto parts was irresistible.

Of course, there are unknown variables with this type of tinkering - the business end (bulb) of the sensor doesn't stick out as far as the Willys original.? Could this alone account for the different gauge reading... at least until the engine had fully warmed up?

PuN.

Pavel Up North,

I am going to give this a try anyways,

I received a lot of help from WillysTech which started over 23 years ago? Without this group I don't believe I could have ever managed my never ending project.? Its been twenty years since I took my first interstate trip to the Spring Midwest Willys Reunion with my pickup in Baraboo, Wisconsin.?

Ted, wait !

The later design (after 9th month 1965) Mustang temperature sensor is apparently a larger size.? If Diana the Greek Goddess of wild animals (and obviously those who labour on Willys vehicles) turns her favour in your direction, it might be possible the larger Mustang sensor will fit in your engine without the trouble of an adapter.?

Your servant,
Pavel up North.

I have the 230 with standard sensor and I don't have any trouble?with it.

Pavel

Thanks for the new information.? I went out and looked tp see if I have a brass coupler in my many drawers in a 150 year old drug store counter.? I had one and then I checker the sending unit in my 226.? The 226 uses a sender with 1/4" NPT.? Now you have me thinking that maybe I should change the fluid, thermostat, and sender now.??

Thanks Again,

Ted,

Being an "A Type" person, changing antifreeze, brake fluid, oil etc.? seems to give me some kind of a warm and fuzzy feeling...? It seems to me that fresh fluids are a relatively cheap way to keep equipment in good nick.? So, I had better follow your lead and change coolant soon.

Cheers,

PuN.
