I have had this problem on several bolts that were flush with the block... I would try using an easy out, I use craftsman but I'm sure there are other brands available. just drill the bolt a little and the easy out will do the rest! Hope this helps! Bob Az ----- Original Message ----

I have a '51 Willys Wagon; original motor and drive train. just starting to tear down. Trying to pull the head off my L6-161 motor and have all the head nuts off. Won't come loose on the front. Question is; do the thermostat housing bolts go all the way into the block??? They broke off trying to take the housing out, but there is still about 3/8 of an inch sticking up above the head. If need be I can drill them out and then re-tap later. Any help welcomed. removers, the ones that look like a nut. My main concern was that the bolts appear to go thru the head and into the block. My L134 the thermostat housing does not go into the block; so I was not expecting this one to . I got all but these two bolts off and ready to take the head off. Trying to see how bad the interior of the motor is. I can't spin it with a socket and ratchet. Hal _____ From: WillysTech@... I would be very reluctant to use an easy out having seen too many broken off

easy outs stuck in the middle of bolts. The easy out is hardened steel and almost impossible to drill out. If the bolt won't come out after liberal use of PB Blaster and then the use of a bolt remover like you described. I would just drill out the bolt and then rethread the hole. You can try using left hand drill bits starting with a small bit and moving up. Sometimes the heat and vibration from drilling will allow the left handed bit to actually unthread the bolt. I'll second not to use an easy out, if the bolt is really stuck its too
easy to break one, and that causes all kinds of hurt! If there is a little bit sticking out you might try taking a nut put it over the bit sticking up and welding it, this does two things it allows you to use a wrench to remove the broken bolt, and the heat from welding may help to loosen the bolt, I've used this method several times with success.
