I read where the product is made. Granted, this sets me up to buy at a slightly

Any one want / need a L-134?

Dave and Robin Samuelson

I have a L-134, stock, in running condition, that I would like to sell/trade for a Chevy 4.3L V6 or 5.7L V8.
You can have all the stuff that goes along with the motor, I.E. Fuel system, Carb, Radiator, Etc.
However, the swap motor must be fuel Injected and as complete as possible. Just as long as there is more than a long
block....
I am looking in the immediate future, IE Now, for anyone who wants it. Or, make me an offer I can't refuse!
I am located in Phoenix, AZ, and make trips to LA on occasion. Of course, if the price is right and a few bucks are thrown
in for delivery, I might deliver within a 500 mile radius, so long as you are paynig for gas, and a cup of coffee on my
arrival!

Well, gang, I too have only good things to say about HF. I spend about 400 bucks
per year on tools and such for various projects, and have never had a problem
either in person or via snail mail. They always are ready with replacements when
I break stuff ( and I do so regularly ) and take it back. Almost like a cheaper
version of craftsman stuff, I think. Catalogs are free, and you can request one
via the net. Just go to and you're there! Plus, you
can search for whatever you could possibly need for tools.

Someone was looking for an FC manual last week. I didn't save the note,
'cause I don't have a FC or a manual for it. But I saw one for $25 today (a
manual, not an FC :-) in Statewide 4 Wheel Drive, Phoenix, Arizona. It's a
reprint from the same series as the utility and universal manuals we all
have. Turner doesn't list it.

Me again.

STARTER BUSHING - INSTALLATION TUFF?

Took starter into shop. Recall, slow crank starting. Needs new
gear on end and he is going to do an autopsy on the motor.

He said I need a bushing installed. Is this a tough job?

I am mechanically inclined when laying on a steep hill with a
pliers. Actually, more than that, but can someone tell me how
much work this will be?

Re: Paint, colors, details

Merl

Ya know, I've seen these questions a lot. Someone should put them
on a web page... (I've been planning to, but then again I've planned
a lot that I haven't done)

I found these in my personal archive, got them off of another list.
Giving credit where credit is due, Todd Paisley posted it. I've
surrounded Todd's information with **** lines.

* What were the original '46 Cj2A color options from factory?

* What were the color of the rims when new? Same as body
or a standard "all models the same" color?
*
All CJ-2A wheels had a pin stripe. This stripe was usually either black or
ivory or it was the body color.

1945 to 1946 (column shift) - There were only 2 colors available. Pasture
Green (A John Deere-like green) and Harvest Tan (a dark tan, light brown).

Pasture Green used a Autumn Yellow (a bright yellow) wheel with a Pasture
Green stripe.

Harvest Tan used Sunset Red (not red but a bright pumpkin orange) wheels
with a American Black pinstripe.

These are the only "official" column shift colors. I say official because
Jeff and I have seen a Princeton Black late column shift Jeep.

1946 (non-column shift) - Pasture Green and Harvest Tan were dropped. 4
more colors were added. Princeton Black (sometimes mentioned as Americar
Black), Normandy Blue (a real dark Navy Blue), Michigan Yellow (a medium
yellow) and Harvard Red (a bright red).

Princeton Black - Still unsure on this one since it was such a rare color.
Period color ads show a Princeton Black either a Harvard Red or Sunset Red
wheels with a American Black stripe. I'm sure any of the wheel colors could
have been used with this color.

Normandy Blue came with 2 different wheel colors. One was Autumn Yellow
with a Normandy Blue or American Black stripe. The other was Sunset Red
with a Normandy Blue or American Black stripe.

Michigan Yellow came with 3 different wheel colors. One was Pasture Green
with a Michigan Yellow stripe. An other was American Black with a Ivory
stripe. The last one was Sunset Red with a American Black stripe.

Harvard Red came with 2 different wheel colors. One was Autumn Yellow with
a Harvard Red stripe. The other was American Black with a Ivory Stripe.

1947 - Harvard Red was dropped. Picket Gray (a dark gray) and Luzon Red (a
maroonish red) added.

Picket Gray had a Harvard Red wheel with a American Black stripe.

Luzon Red had a Universal Beige wheel with a Luzon Red stripe.

1948 - Potomac Gray (a light gray ) added.

Potomac Gray came with 2 different wheel colors. One was Harvard Red wheel
with a American Black stripe. The other American Black with a Ivory stripe.

1949 - Picket Gray, Normandy Blue, Michigan Yellow dropped. Emerald Green
(a dark green) added. I am not sure what the color is on this color is yet.

Somewhere in there Olive Drab was added (probably 1946 or 1947 since it is
listed in the 1947 parts book). I would suspect it was for export models.
****

* Were the underside and underfenders the same color
as the body? If not, what color?
I'm sure they were the same as the body color. I know they were
on mine.

* What year did the "4 Wheel Drive" stencil begin
appearing on the tailgate?
I believe this was sometime in the '50s, don't know exactly when.

* Were the "Willys" markings on the '46 painted
different than the body color? If so, what color?
I've never heard of it being a different color from the factory,
and I know that mine wasn't.

* What were the seat covering options and colors?
I've got this in my archives somewhere, if I run across it I'll
let you know.

* Is there a "Cj2A restoration guide" website?
Not that I've heard of.

If you don't have one, I would recommend that you get a catalogue
from Beachwood Canvas. All of their stuff is pricey, but they've
got stuff like original paint, paint chips, etc. Its a decent
reference guide if nothing else.

Re: L134 slow turnover

Steve Dunlop

Likely you have a starter with 6V field coils. It will need
about 500 amps to turn the engine because of the 6V
field coils. This is more than most batteries can handle.

Your best bet is to take the starter to a really good
auto electric place and have them overhaul it and put
in 12 volt field coils. It will make a world of difference.

I'm assuming that you've checked all the usual stuff,
battery cables, terminals, ground, starter swich,
and so on.

You can try measuring the current drawn by the
starter with an inductive ammeter (buy for $15).
If it is really high then you probably have the 6v
field coils.

Hi from Green Bay...

L-134 - SLOW CRANKING ON STARTUP ATTEMPT

My 2A's flathead-4 is *very slow* to turn over while attempting
to start, to the point of battery drain and strain. Makes one
think the engine has too much compression for the starter to
handle.

It will turn a few revolutions, then stop. I must then turn key
again for a new attempt, even on a fresh battery.

12 volt system. My experience with this engine is new.

Is this common to the 134? Does it sound like I might have
another problem [starter, timing?]

Once running, she is smooth.

VACUUM MOTOR TO INTAKE MANIFOLD - WORKS SUPER

Also, I mounted the vacuum wiper motor to driver's side
windshield. Ran new fuel line hose down to intake manifold only.
It is not attached in any way to fuel pump. Works excellent.
Thanks everyone for your tips on that one. The NAPA guys were
great in finding the fitting for manifold.

Thanks to all in advance.

Here's the latest version. I'm sending it in Excel 97 and csv formats.
I've formatted it in landscape mode for better printouts. I've also
added lines to make it easier to follow across.

Please check the model designations. For those that weren't too specific
I've tried to make my best guess at the model, based on the year. Some
years had multiple engine options so I could easily be wrong. Just drop
me a line.

For those wishing to be added send e-mail to me directly. Format your
message as follows:

Last Name
First Name
Location (City and Province/State)
E-Mail address
Model (as accurate as you can be)
Year

Have a good weekend.

Re: wheel dolly

If I remember right Harbor Freight has a pair for $75 or $80. Each will support
1000 pounds. They're designed to rest the wheel on a formed metal base. Four
casters on the frame. You'd need two pair, obviously.

That might still be too steep but it's an option.

Re: wheel dolly

Jeff Gent

I picked some up from Harbor Freight a while back on sale, regular price
$75/pr and sale price $50/pr. This was after costing out casters, etc.
I could barely beat the cost getting materials retail and I didn't have
to take the time to make them. These are rated at 1000# ea. They seem
well made but poorly assembled (classic Chineese product). Budget $15
for grade 5 bolts and toss the hardware included with.

I've had the wagon on these and can move it around the shop by myself,
though it takes some effort (hint: use pliers to point the wheels where
you want them to go, and sweep). They've come in quite handy elsewhere
as well. They handle axles very nicely (park the pumpkin in the
depression) and currently are under my body. Woodstoves are also easier
to move now.

As for Harbor Freight, I'd like to throw out three cheers. I tended to
avoid them in general since everythings looks to cheap to bother with
until they open a store locally. I couldn't pass up the set of
three-jaw pullers for $9 a while back. Then I broke one, no suprise
given the forces I was applying. They went on sale again and I noticed
that the add said lifetime warrantee and indeed, when I went in they
broke open a set and gave me a new one no questions asked. Not bad for
$9. I've never dealt with them mail order so YMMV (your milage may
vary).

Hi out there in flat fender land.... My name is Steve and live in west
Michigan ( Big Rapids ) I have a passion for the flat fenders, and have
convinced my wonderful wife of 30 plus years that I should have more than
one Willys (6) all totally restored.. However What I do not have is a
restored pick up or (flat bed )... Would like to make contact with
someone who has or knows someone who would like to sell or possibly trade..
This looks like a great place for an old FFF ( flat fender freak ) to be
on the web.. Hope everyone has a great weekend...

Re: What is this pull handle?

Jeff Gent

I may be too late on this since I had a wee prob with the new list
server, all taken care of now....

I've a wagon rather than a CJ, but with the PTO option. The tranny is
not put in neutral to run the PTO unit that these rigs came with since
it bolts into the transfer case and not the tranny. As for a throttle,
I've no option built in except for the manual choke but do plan on
putting one in myself. The latest discussion is the first I've heard of
the governor, by the way.

Probably not relevant is that a mountain rescue unit I'm in owns a
former Air Force ambulance J10 with a tranny driven PTO and a dash
mounted hand throttle.

Sean I think you nailed it right on the head with the PTO. To use the PTO the
tranny would normally be put into neutral. Then if you didn't have a hand
throttle you would have to use the gas pedal. This would be cumbersome at
best so a hand throttle would be installed. Since PTOs were available on all
of these vehicles they would have come with hole even if they didn't come with
the PTO.

Mind you this is just my deductive reasoning an I could be wrong. How about
we hear from you guys with PTOs on the CJs. Do you have a provision for a
hand throttle?
