Re: Spongy Brakes: PUN

Thanks for the comments Strud,

Yes, our wagon is 4WD model, with Herm's dual master cylinder and Chevy front discs (stock Willys drums at the back). ?All hard lines and flex hoses are "new". ?I installed a one way valve (was it 10 lbs?) in the rear circuit but didn't install one on the front because i read that the MC already had that valve built in. ?Perhaps that was wrong... ?I had a proportioning valve (Combination valve from a CJ) installed, but removed it.

Next summer, I'll attack the problem again.

All the best, Pavel up north.

ps: I'll start a thread on my crazy shenanigans while upgrading to a (true) 4 speed soon. ?now that was a bit of work!

Not sure if the dual res master cyl kit will fit on vehicles with the planar suspension as I plan on doing it with my 1950 jeepster. You might just need to add a proportioning valve on the front disc. Just another opinion.

Another check on spongy brakes could be the brake lines. Are they new? Old rubber lines could be expanding as they age.

No, the problem persists in my opinion. ?About 4 years ago I took the Willys to a local shop (still run by an old guy) to have a "safety check" done. ?Now I should say at the outset here, safety and these Willys vehicles don't belong in the same sentence... still, the old fellow checked the vehicle over, tightened U-bolts, adjusted here and there but said the brakes were working normally! ?I pressed him about his analysis but he repeated that the sub-floor position of the master cylinder has its limitations. ?I didn't accept his comments but, it dawned on me that I might be expecting too much from the old girl... ?One change made was the removal of the "combination valve" in my various attempts to firm up the pedal. ?I should put it back as the removal made no difference.?
Drove "Bluebell" for a few days last summer and got our son to take the wheel. ?Judging by the expression on his face, he found the difference between his Nissan Leaf and an old Willys to be dramatic in city traffic.

You should check out the Great North West. Gas is priced much better plus my Wrangler gets about 2 mpg better than Calif gas. Then there's real estate prices. I bought a 1700 sq ft house on 1.31 acres covered with trees, fully fenced with a gated drive, large 2 car garage and a 1550 sq ft shop. I couldn't touch it in Calif.

MWC: Your engine looks nice. Those valve covers give it an old school look that will fit the Willys. I've got the rams horn exhaust manifolds on Tinker Toy. I made a 1" thick spacer block that allowed me to use a die grinder to blend the exhaust out to 2 1/2" diameter tubing. The block tapered from 2 3/8" at the manifold to 2 1/2" at the pipe. I blended from up inside the manifold down to the spacer block. There's plenty of material in there. I noticed an increase in power over the headers I was running and they don't leak. Mopar makes a 2 bolt 2 1/2" exhaust gasket that works for that.

Your collection is growing quite nicely. I've been wanting to stop in but it seems like every time I go through Weed it's either early in the morning or late at night. Once I finish moving I hope to have more time. My house closes escrow on the 27th and I will be making one more trip to So Cal at the end of January to arrange to have Tinker Toy and the 3 project cars shipped up here.

First, a test to see if the pictures are bigger.? This is of my wagon's first paint job in 1972. My friend Mike, pictured, ran the gun; I picked the pine needles out of the paint as we went.?? I think, by this time, the engine had endured a shade tree overhaul, and no longer burned a quart of oil every 60 miles, as it did when purchased- for $200.

Of note, if you want to post several pictures, you can upload them to an album, and? then send a link to the album in an email message to the group, if you want.?? Also, pictures attached to messages are included in the first album if you want to look at them again.

Second, working on turning off emails from the old system.???

Third, still looking for additional moderators or "owners".? The job, primarily, is to review and approve the first message from a new members, and to deal with anything excessively? weird that comes up.? I'm a single point of failure at the moment.

Ok.. while we’re still a bit away from the minimum order of 30 (I think we’re at like 24)? –I talked the owner into an agreement that he charges more per cap and I only have to buy 30 of them INSTEAD OF 48.?
?
So I guess the best way to work this is if you still want a cap you can paypal to my email address $26. + 4.50 shipping. If you’re buying two add another $1.00 for shipping. I haven’t factored in the cost of padded packing envelops but can’t be that much.
?
I have to order them yet..... I need OVER half the orders/$ in before I foot the rest (on a hope that those who committed to ordering actually DO follow thru...)
?
IMPORTANT –MAKE SURE YOU PLEASE TELL ME YOUR COLOR CHOICE AGAIN IN YOUR PAYPAL NOTE ALONG WITH YOUR MAILING ADDRESS!!!!
?
If you’d prefer to mail the check please understand I have to deposit that and wait till it clears before sending your cap.? Shoot me a message and I’ll send you my physical address.

I will do my BEST or fulfill the colors you want of the most popular Black, Olive, Khaki and Yellow. The more orders paid with color choices the accurate I can order all of them.
?
I’ll keep y’all posted.
