Photos of Two Ross Tube/Worm shafts

In an earlier post I talked about my frustrating experience replacing the worm gear steering shaft as I rebuilt the Ross box in my 48CJ2A.? I was frustrated because the new worm gear shaft from Kaiser Willys was different from the original shaft.? The photo below (and in the attachment) illustrates this difference.? The top shaft is from KW: bottom shaft is very likely the 1948 original.? As I compare the two they are machined differently.? What are your observations?

In addition to Walck's, Kaiser-Willys, I have called five Willys parts vendors.? All but one have said they cannot get the shaft.

I'll put the old shaft back in and live with loose steering unless I can locate a vendor who has a new one.? Who should I contact next??

Re: Oil cooler

I did several things at once, so I’m not sure what effect the oil cooler had. I don’t have any issues with the cooler or lines and would do it again again in a heartbeat.

Have you seen an improvement with the system’s ability to regulate the engine temperature?

Thank you for your responses. ?

Re: Oil cooler

I use one on the 350 in my ‘59 Willys pick up. I mounted the cooler under the front of the bed. Works great.

Re: Oil cooler

I use a universal kit that has the block adapter, cooler a dual oil filters. The cooler is mounted under the front crossmember and the filters are on the inside of the frame under the cab. After a few years of putting up with hose clamps the wrap I went to NAPA and had hoses made up with the threaded ends crimped on. I've been running them for over 15 years now and I still don't have to clean up oil spots.

Re: Loose Tappet Adjuster Solution?

I did a DIY rebuild of a Ross box years ago. ?Replaced gasket/seal and two bushings.

Reused the old gears… IIRC the bushings must be reamed to size after installed in the housing.

Anyways, Good luck!

Re: Loose Tappet Adjuster Solution?

After I asked about the temperature range of Permatex Blue, I chastised myself for violating a principle:? Do a search first, then if no satisfying answer is found, ask someone.? Well, I did a search and found that the temperature range application is comparable.? As the kids say: My bad.

I just finished attending to the problem tappet adjuster.? First, I began with No. 1 cylinder and checked the clearance on the two tappets (all OK); checked clearance on No. 3 (all OK); then to No.4 cylinder. One tappet clearance OK the other is the problem tapper adjuster.? I raised the threaded nut to zero lash, cleaned threads by repeated application of lacquer thinner each followed by a blast of compressed air. Finally I cleaned the threads with brake cleaner, followed by compressed air.? After an hour or so to evaporate I applied Blue, set the tappet clearance, then carefully rotated the engine until the tappet was fully engaged with the valve.? This will apply pressure to the tappet/adjusting nut threads for a tighter fit, hopefully resulting in a more secure bond.? I wish I had read your post earlier.? I would have run the adjustment nut up the way you suggest.? Oh well, as my grandkids say, we will see how this works out after 24 hours curing time.? If this doesn't work, then I will try to distort the tappet by squeezing it with a vise grip.

With strong lighting it appeared that someone had set the lash then used a punch to bugger the threads, I suppose hoping that this would solve the problem of a loose adjuster nut.?

Since I've got the fender off I decided to rebuild the Ross steering box next.

Again, thank you for the advice.

I think we have the same product we got from an auto parts store years ago: Permatex Medium Strength Threadlocker Blue, Item #24200.

The package states a Max Temp of 300F… FWIW: I highly suspect Permatex 24200 and Loctite 242 are the same product (I misspelled Loctite in my first reply)…

Both are intended for the same applications: automotive, machinery, etc… The stated specs will vary some between the two based on testing methods, marketing, etc…

?

It’s been a few years since I assembled a L134 so I think this might work for you.

Turn the adjuster nut on the lifter to zero lash and continue turning two/three more full turns compressing the valve spring and slightly opening the valve.

This should expose male threads on the adjuster nut. Clean threads with brake cleaner than do one or both of these: (1) apply threadlocker and/or (2) carefully flatten male threads in two/three places with a small punch. Adjust valve lash to specs and let threadlocker cure for 24 hours.

Jim,

Everything that I could get came over; in other words, nearly all of it made it over.?? Particularly the old messages, which are nicely searchable, but also other information, like glove box plans for the wagon and so on.? It's about that time of year to look at storage to avoid paying for the service, so some attachments to messages may evaporate if needed, when I get around to it.? If anyone else wants to become a co owner or moderator, with all the pay that entails, let me know.??

Re: Loose Tappet Adjuster Solution?

Thank you for responding.? I didn't find LockTite brand.? I did find Permatex Blue thread lock.? How can I get technical data for Permatex Blue to compare to Locktite Blue?? When I compare the specs on the back of the many-years old packaging of locktite Blue with the new Permatex, the number of foot-lbs torque to break the bond are similar.? I hadn't thought about the effect of engine/oil temperature.? That is good information.

Agree, I would try Loctite first… Apply such that it gets worked into a few threads, then adjust valve lash.

The data sheet for Blue 242 Loctite states it maintains 100% strength in a motor oil environment at 257 degrees F so it seems like an ideal fix… Good Luck!

Jim,

The parts board is still there, you had the last post on it.? A link to the parts board is the first link at the bottom of each message. It's not used much; I expect that people use other methods to find and sell parts.

The second link will take you to the Willystech page on groups.io.? On the list of items in a column on the left side, one list is photos.? There you can find the photos from the "old group".?? There are a few photos in the files section; there are patterns and other useful stuff in the files.

Hope this helps,
