I know how you feel! I just let a gentleman from Sacramento purchase my 1947
CJ2A, I think I'm going through withdrawals! I miss the sound of my little engine that could, the occasional scraping of gears as I missed a shift, the wind blowing through what hair I have left, checking for drips of oil or tranny fluid everytime I would move out of a parking place. I"ve looked at Jeeps, Toyota, Nisson,Dodge and Chevies till my eyes bleed! I can't find anything that gives me that feeling like driving my ol' CJ2A. I'm thinking of putting flowers and candles in my ol' buddies parking place. Who needs new? Air conditioning, heater AM/FM radio with CD player or a soft ride? Heck, I'm liable to fall asleep when I hit the roads up in the Sierras! *** See what's new at |
Re: [WT] Home made dry sump system for an F Head ?
curt_rxr
<snip>
Has ANYONE ever done this before to a F head ???Hi Tony, I did something similar on a supercharged L134 in my CJ2a. I didn't go to a full dry sump, since my concern was to have oil in the bearings and especially in the compressor bearings BEFORE the engine turned over on start up or during shutdown in the case of oil pump failure. I used two fuel oil transfer pumps that I got on the surplus market ( Surplus Center, I think...? ), but instead of having them run constantly the scavenge pump is trigged by a fluid level switch in the tank and the pressure pump is triggered by a pressure switch set to turn on the pump any time the oil pressure drops below 20 psi. The advantage is that it only runs as needed and I never start on an unoiled engine. The layout is as you suggest with the intake mounted at the lowest level of the oil pan ( it's independent of the engines oil pickup ), the scavenge pump then feeds a spin on oil filter which empties into a 5 quart tank mounted on the firewall where the oil bath air cleaner used to be. The pressure pump feeds the main oil gallery through a fitting on the front of the engine where clean out plug was. I used a capacitance based fluid level sensor in the oil tank and took my pressure signal from a conventional oil pressure sending unit that I calibrated before installation ( That is I tested a bunch of them on a running engine until they had an hour of running time and then mapped them against a lab grade pressure sensor, mucho overkill, but I'm an engineer! ). The system is controlled by a modified Megasquirt EFI computer which also runs the fuel injection and compressor drive. You could simplify my setup by using an old carb float to push a micro switch to control the scavenge pump on the model of a toilet tank valve or maybe two of them one to turn the pump on at half full and another to turn the pump off when the tank is full. Likewise you could use two pressure senders with one to turn the pressure pump off or even better, if you can build electronic projects use a timer to turn the pressure pump off a minute or two after the engine reaches 20 psi. To me it's a worthwhile endeavor just for the peace of mind in never seeing the oil pressure drop at idle! Sorry for the long post. Curt |

The 1960/61 Valiants didn't have baffles in their tanks either. That's all of the vehicle types I'm familiar with the gas tanks so for my experience that's 100% that do no have baffles. The manufacturer advises against drilling a hole in the tank forDifference between 'could' and liability. MTS won't advise it because then when you screw it up they'd be potentially liable for it. By advising against it they can say "we told you so". If I wanted to add a return line I'd look into having a connection soldered into the plate for the sending unit rather than drill into the tank. Tony,
I had a 2002 Wrangler, and I got the same feeling. I traded it away after about 8 months. The bigger engine should have been great, but with all the weight and stuff (auto trans) added in the power was being sucked up before it ever made it to the ground. I used to play in a CJ5 with a 4 banger back in the late 60's and this new Wrangler was just a big wheezing remnant of what I remember the old Jeep being. It has been owned by an Australian friend of mine for 3 years and he is now heading back home and to import it to Australia is going to cause headaches To be honest its nice to drive , it even has a CD player (my other 3 jeeps dont even have AM radio) but something is MISSING ! How can a 40 year old YOUNGER model Jeep with heaps more power , confy , air cond etc be less fun to drive ? When I drive FrankenJeep I really smile , with the CJ7 its a grin ... is it the clunky 3 speed gearbox , squeaky suspension and the throaty drone of the F head and the smell of oil dripping from the transfer case that I miss ? Anyone else had this let down with later model Jeeps ? I think it has to do with making sure there is a constant supply of fuel to the pump. With the motor you're putting in the wagon you might want to check that out. Plastic fuel tank for Willys Wagon
snakespit1934
A while back, there was a posting on this site about a source for a
plastic fuel tank for Willys Wagons. I bought one from MTS Co., out of Dubuque, Iowa. It is a rugged tank. The walls are at least a quarter inch thick. It even comes with the necessary mounting straps and bracketry. The fit appears to be perfect. The down side of this tank is that it has no internal baffle. Nothing to ebb the sloshing of fuel. I contacted the manufacturer about my concerns, and got a quick rebuttle/question. He asked me to name any original equipment tank that had baffeling. Well, just off the top, I can vouch that my CJ2A tank had a big baffle (partial wall) right down the middle. I assumed that all vehicle tanks used an internal baffle. I was just wondering if any of you have used the plastic tank from MTS Co.,(or any other manufacturer, for that matter), and if the lack of a baffle caused any problems? Seems to me that the sloshing could excessively batter the sending unit, and may even loosen the tank mounts. Also, the tank does not have a return fuel line, neccessary for some engines. How did you provide a return line? What fitting did you use? The manufacturer advises against drilling a hole in the tank for a return fitting. Seems to me that a 1/4 inch wall could support a fitting of some sort, without a problem? Any help/comments/suggestions would be much appreciated. -Denver (Hemet, CA) 44 GPW 61 Willys Wagon project |
