Re: ford rearend

Dave and Robin Samuelson

I did get the numbers off of the id tag... it is WEB-B 3.00 GAD 880.

as near as i can tell (from a 1968 FORD shop manual for Cougar/Mustang) it is
probably a 3.00:1 gear ratio, conventional differential (not limited slip) ,
number of teeth - ring:39 pinion:13. I believe that the entire drive train
came from ~66 Mustang .

Hope this helps.
Well, just a suggestion from the peanut gallery, but - if you could find a true
Ford 9" rear end taht will fit ( or have the clams to get one cut for your
application) then go that route. The various ring and pinion combos available
would be a vast improvement over the 8.8" setup. Plus, they're more durable, and
you should never have a problem with it again. I have one in mt 89 Mustang LX 5.0
and even as hard as I run it, I have never had a problem in 116,000 miles. Change
the diff fluid every other year, and it spins like a clock.

Now that's a cool picture! I wonder why the vertical slats on the grills look
to be chopped up? It does strike me as odd that the guys in the Jeeps looked
dressed for the desert but the feller standing up looks like he's ready for
cool rainy weather. And I never thought about it before, but I suppose the
water situation would tend to limit the number of shaves you'd get on patrol
in the desert too.

You want the belt?

Wow, this new format has alot of levers to pull.

Frank, just received 3 sets of pretty standard lap belts from 4wheel drive hardware. (Don't tell Carl I had a supplier for my CJ-5 before I met him)

They are two pieces for 16.95, and contain all the hardware to attach them to the floor.

Still am not recovering the M1A2s out of the Hood muck, we can not seem to stop a class 3+ leak coming out of the rear main seal. Tried the original rope gasket seal, but was slinging oil out to the right. Then bought a neoprene kit from Carl who didn't think it would work on my early serial 6-226. He was right.

Carl suggests using the rope again, but where the ends meet at the 3 and 9 oclock positions, put a few dabs of Brill creme.

By the way, what is this thing about eating crow? Did I miss something good.

Respectfully, Dan

You want the belt?

Re: ford rearend

Hi Jerry,.

I am happy with the current setup, if I were to change anything I would go to
a manual tranny. Never have liked automatics, but that's life. The rear end is
a good match for the tranny. If i go manual i may ahve swap the rear.....
dunno we'll see.

good luck, eric

Re: Welcome Bill & list commentary

Bill Brennan

Rob,
I am just down the road from you, in El Dorado Hills. I am actually
very close to the town of Latrobe. Unfortunately my truck was not running
when I purchased it (about 5yrs ago) and still isn't. I have been working
on this truck while going to school at CSUS, so my time and money has been
limited. I am now making the mad dash to finish this truck within the next
year because I am in the application process for medical school and will
surely be moving if accepted. I just can't leave the old truck behind, I am
too attached to it. When I get it running I would like to get some other
local Willys truck owners together for an offroad trip or maybe a camping
trip.
If you would like further details about my project, drop me a note
through my personal e-mail (brennanwj@...) and I will write you back.
This way we can make an effort to limit the congestion on the list. I would
also like to hear about your truck.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Bill

Bill,

Where here in Sacramento are you from. I live in Placerville, 40
mins east. I know of a few trucks in the area that are in various stages of
repair. I have been making a few new friends now that I have entered into
the world of Willys/Jeeps. Welcome and would like to here more about your
truck.

Richard,
Thanks for the warm welcome. I am located roughly 30min east of
Sacramento, CA. I have been visiting your site for quite some time now
and
have witnessed its rapid proliferation. I have been eager to send you a
scan of my truck but I have been unsuccessful in doing so thus far. My
girlfriend has a scanner but the quality of resolution is less than poor.
I checked my e-mail this morning and found that I had 37 new messages!
Believe me, I will certainly follow your request and only send mail to
Willys Tech when I deem it necessary.

PS: If you have an address that you are willing to send me, I will mail
you
some photos of the work in progress. Unfortunately I only have single
copies of the photographs I took when I first purchased the truck and
hence,
cannot send you those.

Bill

Yea, go ahead and replace the sincro gears if you havent in a while. You
might as well do it when it is already down. I would also replace the rear
main at the same time. Inspect the main shaft where the needle bearings ride
for any wear and mic the shaft for true roundness.

Eric
Thanks for the info. My 47 Wagon came with the 289 and C-4 from a 1967 Mustang.
If the rear end is working for you, it will make it easier for me to keep the
entire drive train Mustang. If you had a chance would you run a different ratio
or is the 3:00 ratio good? Seem like it should be pretty good for MPG and 99% of
my driving is highway.

Thanks again,
Jerry Stoper

I took some time and sped through adding some 31 details photos of

They are laced throughout the page. If you have already been there,

I've been planning a "virtual junkyard tour" of the place you mentioned above

is well worth a visit, I spent the whole day poking around and smilin'. I

Re: Lawrence Kansas wagon

Brandon, you are right.... The M 715, is in fact a beefed up J series..
They made about 20,000 for the Army and more for export.... Engine
problems are their main weakness, they had the 230 cid OHC six and that
was as I understand discontinued in the civilian model by 1966... This
information comes from the bible.... "Classic 4x4s by Jim Allen
Hope this helps find some j series parts....

Hough, Brandon D.

Never been to Don's or the Lawrence place, but I have been to the military
surplus place in Concordia, MO (45 miles east of KC). They have a ton of
old M715's (isn't that the one based on the J series truck?), some military
Power Wagon's and contrary to their name, several civilian 2a's, 3a's, and
cj5's. The guy said he gets the majority of his stuff from Texas. His
prices start at $2000 for projects on up (nearly all are in
project-condition). He does have a nice military cj5 (sorry, not into the
military designations) that's totally restored that he wants $12000 for.

Mighty fine looking. Speaking of places to visit.... there's a place east
