The service manual has the specs for that (don't remember it off-hand.) If the knuckle is allowed to turn too far the joint gets in a bind and can break. On the Bendix joints in my truck one of the ears making up the joint broke off and the broken off piece locked up the steering. This occurred on a sharp left turn while in 4WD.
