Re: [WT] Locking Hub Noise

I have experienced the same sound in front wheel drive cars at my repair
shop. The sound indicated wear in the constant velocity joints. Any front
wheel drive axel must have some type of joint to allow the wheels to be able
to steer the vehicle. When your hubs are unlocked the front axels are not
rotating hence no popping sound.

Subject: [WT] Locking Hub Noise

I'm looking for opinions or suggestions as to a loud "snapping" or
hard "clicking" noise that comes from the front wheels of my 1953
CJ3B. I drove the Willys for the first time yesterday, as a
shake-down run before installing the body. Bolted in a temporary seat
and hand throttle & off I went. Low speeds, no sudden moves, just
seeing if all systems function. Here is my question - At full
steering wheel lock left or right, there is a loud "click, or snap"
that appears to come from the front wheels. This happens only in four
wheel drive, with the locking hubs engaged. In two wheel drive, hubs
disengaged, no noise. The hubs were reconditioned & appeared to be in
good shape. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John 1953 CJ3B
