Re: NTP Clock problem
Mitch, I don't know if this solves your problem, but you can get version 2.2.14 of the TFT_eSPI library here: Bruce On Fri, Sep 16, 2022 at 11:00 PM Mitch W4OA <w4oa@...> wrote: A friend admired my NTP Clock (dual) on my web page. NTP Clock problem
A friend admired my NTP Clock (dual) on my qrz.com web page. I volunteered to furnish him the pcb and I 3d printed him Bruce's nice box. The box came out GREAT! Since I had some ESP8266 modules extra I decided to program one for him, I would assign an arbitrary wifi name and password so he could check it out with his cell phone hotspot.?
I programmed an extra ESP8266 module and plugged it in, compiled for my home wifi. Compiled just fine, no errors. But no display, no joy. Compiled and uploaded Bruce's "Hello World" display test sketch, compiled and uploaded ok, led blinking away. But, no display.? Checked the TFT_eSPI library by Bodmer, it is now at version 2.4.72. I was at 2.3.59. Bruce used 2.2.14. I tried to retrogress the library to 2.2.14, no joy, it won't load any version prior to 2.3.59. Unfortunately, the last time I compiled the clock was when I built mine, over a year ago. I don't know how my library got updated, but it did. So I am stuck! Anyone run into this problem and find a workaround, or any suggestions on how to solve my problem? Tnx in advance for any assistance! Mitch W4OA Opelika, AL |
Re: Practice sending key delay
Mischief Managed.. It was the Farnsworth speed setting. I had 22WPM, 5 WPM Farnsworth. Not sure why so low as I haven't tried copying receive groups where it would matter. With 22/10, the delay is too short to bother. I can live with that as I won't be trying to stay at 5 WPM Farnsworth long. Thanks for all the digging. I had my esp32 Tutor in a metal enclosure I had on hand. I'm in process of locating a sloped front plastic enclosure that will again allow access to the ESP programming port. On to practice!

Re: Practice sending key delay
The delay depends on the Farnsworth speed as well, the longest it can get is 2.4s, but that requires? 50WPM/3WPM (Code/Farnsworth), that seems like torture.? At more normal speeds I definitely?had the same effect as what you described, where I started keying my 'answer' in the 'Copy' practices before the tutor was listening to me, which disappeared with the fix I put in, but the delay was 150-400ms for the speeds in the 20-25/10-15 range.? Keep in mind I'm talking about the delay between the last dit or dah played by the tutor and the time it accepted my input. The display shows the characters before it is sending, so that will add to the delay you perceive, especially for longer letters. There is an alternate scoring mode which does not show the characters early, to use that hold down the encoder knob for more than a second when selecting a 'Copy' exercise. If that doesn't help enough and you're comfortable reprogramming your tutor you can try and see if it improves anything, or you can start tracking this down by adding Serial.println() statements, and using the Arduino IDE to see where time is spent (Tools->Serial Monitor, check 'Show Timestamps').? Re: Practice sending key delay
Does the delay change when you change the speed? The ?always calls characterSpace() to automatically include the 'inter-character' spacing (which depends on the speed),? Normally this isn't an issue, but in the 'Copy' practices the tutor will not start listening for your reply until that space is 'sent'.? So for example Copy Two sends:? - character one - space - character two - space? and only then listens for your answer. I changed the code to after the last character.? Erik. Re: Practice sending key delay
Duane,?
I noticed a delay too, and I think it is caused by the code in sendElements() always adding a character space after sending a string. This delay depends on speed settings, so not everyone will see 3 seconds. For some reason I didn't notice the problem when using the alternate scoring method, you get there by holding the select button down long. It may be that I'm just a lot slower when only hearing the characters, so the issue is not as noticable when I also see the characters.? I changed the code to omit the character space in the send practices (the 'mimic1()' path), you can look at my to see how I did that, look for the sendStringNoWait() function, and the parameter added to sendCharacter() and sendElements(). I have the ESP32, so only updated that .ino, but I also have other changes in that repo you may not be interested in (rss reading).? Erik - N2EPE |
Re: Practice sending key delay
The way to see the problem is to watch the PRACTICE/SEND character to display and hear the character being presented. As soon as the sound completes, hold down the Morse key. There is (on mine) a 2-3 second delay before the key-down is registered. I have to consciously wait >3 seconds to start sending or the beginning of the response is absent.

Practice sending key delay
In practice sending..the Tutor displays the character and its audio. It waits 3 seconds before it looks at the operator's key input. It is really frustrating to see the character, hear it and the first bits of the key send are cut off. Is there a change in the code to allow the response character to be entered faster?

Thank you Bruce and Ralph!

The Rio Hondo Amateur Radio Club has twelve Morse Tutors thanks to the great work of Bruce Hall W8BH and a lot of support and guidance from?Ralph WB9ICF. Ralph had two kitted up already then I ordered boards and other parts for ten more. Bruce very kindly provided a limited number of boxes, then I ordered two LEDO6060 boxes from JLCPCB (they're nice) and three will be box-less for awhile (those three are kitted and without buyers as yet). My club is interested in practicing CW, not in kit building, so I assembled six of the nine that are in use. Only a couple of folks have even looked at the code. Those of us who have already went tweaking with various bits (pardon the pun) to make the Morse Tutor more fun to use, such as changing the names in the name list to club member's names. Just little things-- none of us KNOW C++!
Anyway-Great project! Great support! Great friends! '73 Robert AD6XJ |

I am truly sorry that I cannot help you with a W8BH LC Meter PCB. I have heard about the expensive shipping rates and taxes on goods shipped to the EU. Hopefully, you will find a local company near you. Best of Luck! May I refer you to the coreWeaver LC Meter? I believe he is either in Germany or DenmarK? Maybe he can refer you to a PCB Fab Shop in the EU? His email address is: core.weaver@... Re: PCB for LC Meter project
Ken,
Several PCB manufacturers?in China charge only $ 4,90 for 5 or 10 PCB
But the shipping cost to Holland are about $ 16,00? exclude VAT
Since July 2021 we have to pay VAT and Import Taxes extra also on small parcels
so when i take that in mind the PCB are going to cost me about $ 32,-
?
Selling the extra PCB i don't need to Hams in US are also expensive, because i must send them as
small Parcel and not as Letter. the lowest shipping cost to US for a small parcel is $ 19
so thats?also to expensive
I gonna try to find someone here in Holland or Belgium who can make? a PCB for me
Perhaps thats the best way to do
?

Actually, JLCPCB (China) only sends five (5) PCBs per order unless you order more. I ordered my W8BH LC Meter PCBs from OSH Park. They are ENID PCBs. They only send three (3) PCBs per order, but the cost is much more. I sent one OSH Park PCB to Bruce for appreciation of all his work. I am slowly building another; and the third one is a backup in case I mess up the first one. So *I* do not have any extra PCBs for that project. Sorry. I did order some PCBs from JLCPCB for the W8BH LC Meter, but they have all been shipped. I do not have any of the JLCPCB PCBs left. I have no idea what kind of import tariffs would be added to that OSH Park order? The Shipping and Handling was included with the price of the PCBs. I chose the Free Shipping option. They are very nice PCBs, very suitable for a piece of Electronics Test Equipment. If no one can help you with an extra PCB, and you order from a fab house, consider seeking someone in your local Amateur Radio Club to buy an extra one or two from you? This type of project might even be suitable for a Club Build-a-thon, whatever. Re: PCB for LC Meter project
Hello Cor, PA0GTB,
Welcome to the group. The Gerbers for the W8Bh LC Meter PCB are available for download from: The file to download is named: BN49 gerbers.zip Upload that file to your favorite PCB Fabrication house in the EU. Or, you can also upload the Gerbers to a Chinese fabrication house such as JLCPCB. or any other fabrication house of your choice. Hopefully Helpful. Tutor - Thanks! - RSS reader
I built the Morse Tutor, and wanted to drop by here and thank Bruce for a great project and excellent description.
I am a fairly new ham, and really enjoyed the experience of getting the parts ($4.66 for 5 PCBs incl shipping!?) and programming and building the Morse Tutor. I heard about the tutor on the Ham Radio Workbench podcast, and because of the credit given in the Tutor's description am looking into Jack Purdum's projects as well.? Little disappointed that after plugging it in I still don't know morse code. Instead of the work that is involved in fixing that, I've been adding some code, I thought it would be fun to practice with news from websites (saw that in the Ham Morse iPhone app). The code allows you to select an RSS feed it and plays the title and descriptions of entries in the feed. Yes, RSS is still around, and I included feeds with ARRL news, Southgate arc, BBC and a few others. If anyone is interested it's at? If you have a better way to do this, or have some suggestions for different ham related RSS feeds to listen to, let me know.? Thanks! Erik - n2epe |
