POTA Activation Saturday
4
We’re going to attempt a POTA activation Saturday at 3pm. Join us if you can at White Ranch, Trail 6. We’ll set up a couple radios and work under the club call sign, but will have to stay on different bands to prevent duplicates. We’ll try to use the HAMRS program to do our logging. It has a POTA mode and very simple to use. If you haven’t checked it out, go to hamrs.app. They have a version for about every device you can come up with. We may have to share and take turns, loggers / talkers sort of thing but we’ll make it work. You’ll probably want to bring a lawn chair also. Below is a link with some information on doing a club activation. Thinking the solar flare might cause the bands to be a problem?…. I decided to sneak down to the dean davis conservation area today and see how conditions were. They were up and down a little but I ended up making 111 contacts in just under 2 hours on 20 meters…. So we should be fine!!! Was a ton of fun!! Hope you’ll be able to join us. Eric https://docs.pota.app/docs/activator_reference/activator_guide_clubs.html

Hurricane nets
2
Below is a link with some streaming options for the hurricane watch net. You can also monitor those frequencies direct on your HF radio if available. I’m mobile today and listening to the stream. I’m also monitoring the SARnet, which is Florida's statewide amateur radio network or repeaters. A link to it is below as well. https://m.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/35392 https://www.hwn.org/tools/streaming-audio.html

Interested in a DIY LiFePO4 Battery Tester Project?
Does this project look interesting to anyone else? https://www.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/comments/11bvibl/i_made_a_battery_capacity_tester_with/ Wiring Diagram. I can't speak to the safety or credibility of the site, but none of the alarms in LibreWolfe or uBlock Origin went off. https://imgur.com/a/Lul6v1J RELATED: working my way through this Ham Radio Workbench podcast. https://www.hamradioworkbench.com/podcast/hrwb-218-18650-battery-tester-project-with-rick-kc6uft https://www.hamradioworkbench.com/articles.html Steve

ARES Net tonight at 8pm. I think our schedule has run out, and I’ll be out of town at a volleyball game tonight, unlikely to be done in time. Any volunteers for net control?

FW: NC Amateur Radio Emergency Traffic
4
Just thought you might like to know about this if you want to hear some of what the ham operators are doing in NC Mike Coldiron Howell County Emergency Management Director 180 Kentucky Ave. West Plains Mo. 65775 Phone 417-255-0515 Fax 417-255-0514 Email howellcountyemd@... Secure email: Mike.coldiron@... From: Chris Gaut <cpgaut@...> Sent: Monday, September 30, 2024 8:55 AM To: Gaut, Chris <Chris.Gaut@...> Subject: This is what amateur radio is all about. Shared from discord. Sharing a message I was sharing in other venues because I think this group might find it interesting: > As I think most of you know, Western North Carolina is....really bad right now. No power and phones to most of the area. There's a lot of health and welfare traffic going over ham radio, because there really isn't anything else. > > A lot of this is being funneled through a repeater on Mt. Mitchell. There's a web stream of this repeater at https://www.broadcastify.com/webPlayer/43107 (this is normally a different repeater, but they remapped it). > > Here's your chance to listen to emergency communications live. I'm tuned in as I send this mail, and they have incoming requests coming in and net control is trying to find hams in specific areas to do welfare checks requested by family outside of the area. > > > Benjamin, WY2K Chris Flinn w8wot

APRS and Foxhunts
2
Not trying to horn in on anything - just a thought. . . . Using APRS for "search and rescue" or foxhunting. A team of foxhunters (searcher) would be around town (or search area), transmitting their location via APRS. The "mapper" would locate them on a map of the search area. When the searcher hears the beacon they would take a compass bearing and report that to the "mapper" who would draw a line on the map from the searchers location showing the reported bearing. When each searcher reports and their bearing are drawn on the map, where the lines cross would be the location of the beacon (or at least very close). (Disclaimer: I have never personally been foxhunting.) This would be an application of radio, communication and land-navigation skills. A WIN-WIN-WIN. We could have a "scavenger hunt" for beacons. Team that finds the most beacons in an allotted time wins. When my sister was in Civil Air Patrol they sometimes did search and rescue for downed aircraft. I have also seen APRS used to monitor cross country or marathon events. -

Club Meeting Tuesday at 6pm
Club Meeting Tuesday night at 6pm. Please join if you can. Vice President, Craig AE0WA will moderate this meeting as I'll be out of town for training this week. Chris KC0F will have an ARES meeting following and I believe he plans on talking about an APRS Digipeater he has set up at his residence, which I'm sorry I'm going to miss. APRS can be a lot fun and very useful in an emergency, so be sure attend his presentation. I'd love to see us use it in the future!! Eric
