Re: FCC Planning to ban Direct Conversion Receivers?
It's beyond time to ditch this old tech that is holding humanity back from the next great leap in evolution. This is what deregulation of the FCC has paved the way to. I've heard that foil will be banned next due to the unpredictable sporadic F-layer oscillations created when foil is wrapped around "rabbit ear" antennas. This creates more spurious interference to Starlink's low-earth constellations and quite literally "foils" the reach of the satellites' usable range. Furthermore, Reynolds Caps are proving an impediment to Starlink's plans of beaming Internet service directly into people's heads thus bypassing the need for expensive phased array antennas, modems or even computers. But just you watch, direct conversion receivers and aluminum foil are just the tip of the iceberg. On Tue, Apr 1, 2025 at 9:54?AM Chris Miller via <Linuxgeek98=[email protected]> wrote:

Upcoming Workshop
As part of our preparations for the upcoming Technician class, we’re excited to host an Introduction to Amateur Radio Workshop on Saturday, April 12th, from 9 am to 12 pm at the Lybyer Enhanced Technology Center on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus. This three-hour workshop will be an opportunity for us to discuss and showcase various aspects of amateur radio operations. ? I understand that this is a short notice, but we would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can provide. As amateur radio operators, we’re well-versed in the unique ways we can communicate using different bands and equipment. I’m eager to showcase as much of this knowledge as possible during this event. ? The primary objective of this workshop is to attract as many people as possible, answer their questions, and encourage them to sign up for our class, which will commence two weeks later. Since the workshop will be drop-in, having as many volunteers set up and available to assist attendees will be beneficial. ? I haven’t had the chance to discuss this with Mike yet, but perhaps we could even bring the trailer over to the event that day. I believe the emergency communication aspect might be a significant draw for potential attendees. ? We’ll begin promoting this event and our class the next couple of days, so please keep an eye out for information on your email and social media platforms. A special ‘Thank You’ to Cathy Boys, who received her technician license at last year’s class, and her team at MSU for helping promote these events and make a classroom available for our class. We look forward to working with her team at the Office of Workforce Development and Community Education to provide these events to our community. ? |

Re: Missouri QSO Party
The Missouri QSO Party is fast approaching, April 5th and 6th. A link to the rules is below, but I’ll touch on a couple specific items.?
?
If you’d like to participate but don’t know how or don’t have the equipment to participate, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I plan on doing something, but haven’t solidified any plans yet. We can certainly make arrangements with myself or another member to get you on the air. ?

I dropped the ball at the last meeting when I failed to add this subject to the agenda. We can discuss during the net. If you can't join tonight, but want to contribute an idea please reply to this post. I'll monitor the thread and report your input to the net.
?
Long story? short, back in 2024 JJ had a good suggestion to run an HF net of our own. We settled at the time on this VHF net on the third Tuesday of each month. The practice never became routine so I would like discuss the club's interest in continuing this net and whether to start an HF net.

HF Nets / Simplex Nets and other stuff.
There is a Missouri ARES net every Sunday at 2pm. The net takes place on 7.263 Mhz or 3.963 Mhz depending on propagation. If 40 meters doesn't work, they move to 80 meters. Net control will call for check-in's by region. We are region G. You'll also be asked to provide your county. I'm sure you'll be able to listen to other stations to hear how to check in. In speaking with Don from the Ozark County club, there are only a few from region G that check in. We'd love to see region G better represented and test our HF communications as far as emergency communications are concerned.?
?
Also, the Missouri Traffic Net occurs daily at 5:30pm on either of the frequencies listed above, the the primary is 80 meters (3.963Mhz). Check in if you're available.
?
Also, I mentioned that I've been communicating with Don, who is the president of the Amateur Radio Club of the Ozarks in Ozark County. Some of their recent facebook posts had captured my attention where they had been testing simplex communications via 2 meter SSB. Up until this last week, I didn't own a radio capable of SSB on 2 meters!! Their plan was simply to see what kind of communications they could achieve on side band and possibly use that as a back haul to talk longer distances in the event repeaters aren't operational and 2 meter FM simplex doesn't cut it. An example would be that I might be able to talk simplex with Steve who doesn't live too far from me, but Steve can't talk via simplex to Mike who lives just north of the Arkansas border. Via side band, Mike and I might be able to talk and relay Steve's messages even though we're further apart. It's not a perfect example, but maybe you get the point. Anyway, I'm excited and looking forward to the opportunity to work with our neighbors, make more "ham buddies" as my wife would say, and improve our ability to communicate in times of need. If you have suggestions, please let me know!

Spring Parks on the Air Weekend
April 19th and 20th will be Support Your Parks weekend for anyone interested in POTA. I was able to participate in one of these weekends last year and achieve approximately 250 contacts in just a few hours at two different parks. The bands were jam packed with activators and the weather that weekend was perfect!! Tons of fun!! If you're unable to get out to a park, you can always be a hunter from your home and give all the activators the contacts they need!?
?
I don't know what I'm going to do yet, but as long as it isn't raining, I'll probably set up somewhere. If you make plans, be sure and share!!

Missouri QSO Party
The Missouri QSO Party is coming up on April 5th and 6th. The goal is to help other radio amateurs outside Missouri work as many counties as possible, and Missouri amateurs to work other states and countries. You can find all the rules at the link below. There’s a section on the website where you can register what counties and modes you plan to work on what days. Check it out! There’s already someone who’s registered to operate both CW and SSB from most of every county in southern Missouri over the two days. I need to take a closer look at the rules, but I think everyone can work from wherever they want and add our club call to their log when they submit it to create a club score (you need at least 3 submissions). It’ll definitely be a great way to make a ton of contacts that weekend! Hopefully everyone will be able to participate in one way or another!!? ? ?
