Hello, Catherine.? Interesting question!? I checked Newspapers.com and downloaded the first few entries that came up.? (If you order them by time downloaded they should be in order; there are some page jumps.)?

Re: Snob Hollow

re: a friend is looking for some history on Snob Hollow
HI, Catherine and all:
Here is some stuff I found during a quick peruse of the interweb:
- Cindy "TheTravelGal", "Historic Arizona: The Historic Mansions of Main Avenue", posted 15-JUN-2014 on Exploration Vacation website -- -- details on the histories of some of the noteworthy houses.
- Ken Scoville, "Another Piece of History Lost in Tucson", 02-JUL-2015 _Tucson Weekly_ -- -- scroll down to the fifth paragraph for the Snob Hollow information (although it is all a good read)
- Michael Kleen, "Tucson¡¯s Mysterious Manning House", posted 27-MAY-2015 on Mysterious Heartland website -- -- covers Levi Manning and the Manning House (possibly haunted) including this tidbit "One of Manning¡¯s development projects turned the area around his home into an upscale subdivision known as Snob Hollow"
- Tony Davis, "House was just one part of Manning's grand reach", 31-MAR-2013 _Arizona Daily Star_ -- -- again, not much on Snob Hollow's growth or houses other than "The [Manning H]ouse itself was built amid grain fields that Manning later helped develop into an upscale subdivision known as Snob Hollow." Manning House was apparently at one point in the floodplain of the Santa Cruz River. Fun fact: I thought I read somewhere that when Howell Manning Jr. died in an auto accident, Howell Sr. (son of Levi) sold a chunk of the Canoa Ranch to developers (including Del Webb?) to create what is now the first part of Green Valley (as many of you likely know, Canoa Ranch has an interesting history). I may be misremembering.
Best wishes for a peaceful new year to all,
Les.

Re: remembering Amphi Shopping Center at 1st / Ft. Lowell

I wonder if they'll rehab the sign.?

Re: remembering Amphi Shopping Center at 1st / Ft. Lowell

Amphi Shopping Center had a "get acquainted" opening on Dec. 5, 1957 with the grand opening set for January 1958 (so we're almost at the 59th anniversary!).? Construction started in June so wow, it went up quickly!? The original stores were:? Goodman's Market, McClellans, Goldwyn's Jr. Department store, Bon-Ton Bakery, Jarrold Drug store, Amphitheater Drive in laundry, Berner-Judd Town Shop, National Shoe Store (I wonder if that was any relation to the National Shirt Co where Wigorama is?), Wilson Furniture, Mahan Barber Shop (I think they would have known how to do a perfect duck tail!), Matt's Toy Shop, and a branch of Southern AZ Bank and Trust.? An original corner service station was razed and a new one, O'Brine Sav On, was built, although I could find no articles or ads with this location.? They did have a location at 3702 E. Grant where the empty building is west of the Girl's Estate Sale and north of PDQ Records.

The Goodman's Market #3, originally opened in 1946 in what was Dail's Market building across the street from Amphi Center, opened in December 1957.? Guess the old building came down.? (Carlos there is a photo in the Jan 22 1958 Daily Citizen, page 32 of the original Goodman's/Dail's building if you don't have it.? There is also a drawing of it in a Dail's ad, ADS 10/20/1945, page 12).? I looked at old maps online but couldn't figure out the location of the old Dail's market.

I'm sure most of you are aware of this, so I apologize if I'm repeating information, Friedman and Jobusch were the architects.

Sure hope we can save the awesome sign!

Re: remembering Amphi Shopping Center at 1st / Ft. Lowell

In my high school years (early 60's) my brother and I would come from the "far eastside" (Wilmot/Broadway) to Amphi Plaza for slot car races at the hobby shop. I don't remember the name of the hobby shop, but we always had a great time showing off and racing our latest creations.

Re: remembering Amphi Shopping Center at 1st / Ft. Lowell

I hate to see Amphi Plaza get half-torn-down, but I hope the influx of new business might get people to stop dropping off their old furniture and other junk on the east end.?

Re: Digest Number 1822

Amphi Shopping Center circa 1957

remembering Amphi Shopping Center at 1st / Ft. Lowell

Hello All,

Here's an excerpt from a note sent in by the ever-vigilant Les:

"As you are no doubt aware, the east end of the Amphi shopping center has been demolished and will be replaced with -- drum roll, please -- Wal-Mart.
The good news is that when I biked past today, the period "Amphi Center" sign was still up, as was the sign that used to be for the Chinese restaurant at the west end of the strip.? It looks like the Chinese restaurant sign used to rotate, but was immobilized presumably to accommodate that dopey fake Mission-style tile awning facade.
Are either of these unique enough to warrant historic landmark sign status?
Having a big box economic bloodsucker on that property is bad enough, but losing the signs would be adding insult to injury.? In my not-so-humble opinion. ;^)
The center itself is pretty interesting, with a walk-through corridor (near the west end, leading north from the parking lot) to a barber shop and angular canopy suggesting that customers were expected to circulate more than just to and from their veehickles."

Carlos replies:

Thanks Les,

Amphi Shopping Center on the northeast corner of 1st and Fort Lowell has always been one of my favorites in a humble sort of way.

Brief tangent - Steve at Amphi was my favorite barber until he retired in the 90's.? No one else knew how to cut my duck-tail. Not many barbers remember how.? I asked around and ended up at Gibson's.? Johnny admitted he couldn't cut a DA, but his man Marv remembered how.? Marv cut my hair until we lost him to Alzheimers.? Now I go to Red at Buddha's.? Red is a genius with scissors, and used to play in a country-western band around town, but that's another topic.

Back to Amphi, I've heard that the shopping center was a big deal when it opened in the late 1950's.? At that time, Amphi would have had the furthest north supermarket and department store on 1st Avenue, serving the growing northwest side of Tucson, as well as catering to the Foothills subdivisions, which were designed with no shopping.? I looked all over for period photos of Amphi when there was a brief but futile attempt to persuade the developers to renovate the buildings instead of tearing them down.

Yes, both the signs you mention are potentially historic, each for their own reasons.? I assure you that the only reason the signs haven't already been demolished is that the developers know that new signage with that same height, square footage, and setback would be totally illegal today.? The signs are still in jeopardy, so thanks for the reminder.

Everyone please feel free to post a memory of Amphi Shopping Center if you used to shop there.? Some of you commented on this back in 2011 and 2012, but it's okay to repeat yourself once every 5 years or so, right?? Don't make me get out my old City Directory.

Thanks,

Carlos

Re: Haunted Tucson, 2016

Hello All,

?

Here are a few stories given to me directly to post. ?The first is not a ghost story, but still a great remembrance. Enjoy.

?

Thanks,

?

Carlos

?

?

Fort Lowell

Submitted by Elias Molina, Jr. son of the owner of Molina¡¯s Restaurant on Speedway

¡°When we were around 10 years old, back in the 60¡¯s, me and my brothers and some friends decided to investigate the rumors that the Fort Lowell ruins were haunted.? We were scared so we took our BB guns. We quietly entered one of the larger dilapidated buildings and began listening for ghosts.? One of us accidentally made a loud noise which caused dozens of roosting doves and bats to instantly explode into flight all around us. We all ran out of the building screaming.? Hearing this, Old Man Adkins came out of the welding shop and chased us down.? I accidentally dropped my BB gun, and when I stopped to pick it up, Adkins caught me.? He demanded to know the name of my father.? It turned out that he and my father were old friends, so he let me go. ?

¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡.

?

Old Pueblo Traders 3740 E. 34th? now owned by University of Arizona

?

Many employees of this building have reported hearing strange noises, and more.

?

An employee with an office on the second floor explained how the building is constructed with pre-stressed concrete, and the entire floor flexes slightly up and down as people walk through the hall outside his office. You can literally feel their footsteps.? On one occasion while working late, he distinctly heard the usual sound of footfalls on the carpet in the hallway outside, but in this one case, the floor did not move at all.? He called the security guard downstairs who assured him that there was no one in the building besides themselves.

?

On several occasions, building security guards were known to quit rather than work alone at night.

?

On one night the security guard heard very loud noises and quickly located the cause. Several large filing cabinets had been pushed over.? Since this was an obvious sign that intruders were in the locked building, he called for police backup.? They searched the building thoroughly, but found no one.

?

Carlos note: this is another case involving a fairly new building, too new to be haunted (?), but built in the vicinity of early Native American settlements, usually near water.? In this case, aerial photography from the 1950¡¯s shows the ?area before development criss-crossed with old trails and small arroyos.? A larger, older arroyo may have been diverted prior to construction of Davis-Monthan nearby, and adjacent residential subdivisions. ?Much of Tucson¡¯s monsoon flooding problems can be attributed to the elimination of these natural watercourses.

?

?

¡°Back in 2015 I was driving down Palo Verde Boulevard at night. As I approached the north side of Pima Street, I saw a dark apparition crossing the road from east to west, in the crosswalk.? The apparition seemed to absorb the light from my headlights, so I couldn¡¯t see it any clearer, even as I drove closer.? When it reached the edge of the road, it disappeared.? I probably would not remember or report this incident, but the exact same thing happened again, a few weeks later.? I have never seen anything like this before or since.¡±?

Thanks for the great scary stories; I had to sleep with the light on last night.? :D

Paul Richard Whalen died 22 Dec 2010 in Phoenix, according to social security records.? I looked for a 2010 obituary in the Republic (I have an all-access account up to the present), but the latest that came up was 1983.? It's a long article, which I will attach as a photo; I hope the image is big enough to read.? Let me know if it's not, and I'll try again.

The Huffs who were murdered in Marana in 1957 were Freelin and Louise (not Roland).? The man who murdered them, Paul Whalen, was committed to the Arizona State Hospital and was still institutionalized in 1973.? No information found on his death.

Thanks for some spooky tales - will have to do a Halloween jaunt :)

music legend Bobby Vee, Tucson snowbird, passes away

Hello All,

This message should absolutely not be confused with the "Haunted Tucson" topic.?

Very sad to report that music legend Bobby Vee passed away recently at only 73.? I heard that he was a Tucson snowbird, and wondered if any of our members ever bumped into him at AJ's Fine Foods, or wherever?? I heard that he was still singing at fund raisers up until 2011.? What a great guy.?

We're lucky that so many notable people end up retiring in Tucson, you never know who you might meet.

Thanks,

Carlos

Haunted Tucson, 2016

Hello All,

Halloween is nearly upon us, so it's time again to report your encounters with the supernatural in Tucson. Can you add to our list? Can you personally confirm anyone else¡¯s anecdotes? Public interest in the paranormal keeps growing, and I've noticed that young people are more aware of history and historic buildings because of it. I was going to create a fact-based, historically accurate ghost tour this year, but was too busy working on Tucson Modernism Week. I promise I'll do a walking tour next year for VanishingTucson.com members.

Meanwhile, please post your paranormal experiences here, and I'll add them to our list. This is a semi-private group, so there's no need to be bashful about sharing your experiences.

Thanks to everyone who posted last year! There were personal ghost stories reported at the Franklin Building, El Charro, a long list of ¡°activity¡± at the Fox, and particularly chilling detailed anecdotes about Bring's Funeral Home. I¡¯ve added your reports to the list.

Our massive alphabetical list below was compiled from books, newspapers, T.V., online sources, and of course, our VanishingTucson first hand accounts. Like our list of Tucson films, it is the most comprehensive list available anywhere. Thanks to all of you!

From VanishingTucson.com¡

Fred wrote ¡°I asked my Dad this one and even he didn't know. At the end of 1st avenue, called Christie Drive, there used to be an abandoned complex of buildings (late 60s) that could have been a rest home or something like it. There were 3 or 4 wings with enclosed courtyards, and one 2-story section that overlooked a pool and had a great view of the city. Now, this is a bunch of condos or apartments¡¡±

Ted replied: ¡°[Arizona Desert School] was a private school offering top notch education and services to young men with health problems. There was a stable, corrals, polo field, sports courts and many other benefits.
Each student had his own horse, courtesy of the School, chores to do each day, and a full schedule of classes. Many of the kids came from the East, and included the Firestone (tires) brothers, the Haggin brothers (horse racing),

Arizona Historical Society, 949 E. Second Street
Many of the employees of the Arizona Historical Society have experienced unexplained phenomena over the years. AHS has had it¡¯s budget slashed, including staff, so it¡¯s not hard to be alone in a cavernous wing of the huge, silent, building. If you believe in spirits, it should be easy to find them in a building stuffed with centuries-old artifacts, but remember that AHS employees are highly educated, un-superstitious historians and archivists. Most of their stories involve the usual weird sounds and voices. The most specific account seems to involve a painting from the Spanish Colonial period, which just so happens to be stored in the oldest part of the building, in the deepest basement archive.

Blenman House 204 South Scott Avenue
A San Franciso-Victorian style home built in 1878 out of adobe.
excerpt from news report by KOLD TV channel 13
Jeff Digregorio, Co-Owner, Royal Elizabeth Bed & Breakfast, "This is the Royal Elizabeth Bed & Breakfast Inn. It's found in the historic Blenman House and those who've been in Tucson a while know the name Blenman. We certainly don't advertise ourselves as a haunted bed & breakfast, but when people come to an historic inn, I think they come expecting to have encounters with spirits."
And this old house, complete with vintage furniture and old-world style craftsmanship doesn't disappoint.
"Judge Blenman is said to be hanging around in this place way after his passing way back in the early part of the last century." The Blenman family owned this home for more than 100 years and the Cindy Marie suite used to be Judge Charles Blenman's old law office. One he's not ready to leave.
"We've seen writings of previous owners and records from people who've been here in the past, who have claimed to see Judge Blenman walking around up and down the parlor and down the garden path."
The new owners of the Royal Elizabeth have some stories of their own.
"This back door would open by itself all the time. Really strange. We'd go and we'd close it and we'd leave and it would open again."
And people aren't the only ones noticing strange occurrences.
"Also our dog Lucy who is walking around here at the moment would all of a sudden run to this door and sit there and bark when no one was clearly in the house."
Judge Blenman's office isn't the only requested suite.
"They also request the Rose Room, which is another room in the house. There are websites written about activity from the Blenman family as well."
But don't let the ghost stories scare you off, the owners say it's harmless and part of the experience of staying at an old inn.
"If Judge Blenman or anyone else is living in the house with the rest of us here. They clearly are having a good time and appreciate what we've done with the place and the energy that's here in the house."

Bring's Broadway Chapel 6910 E. Broadway.
The funeral home was built in 1966, on the site of the former 1958 Lusk Corporation offices.

These occurrences were reported privately, and happened to the person¡¯s family member while working at Bring's.

".... He first mentioned a time when he was staying overnight and a woman came to do a drop-off from the removal company. After she delivered the body the radio all of a sudden went on by itself and started playing the Beach Boys in the embalming room. They were both very spooked out.

Other things that happened while he was doing the night shift, he would hear pipes banging in the middle of the night for no reason (one guy quit after hearing them). The phone would ring at all hours of the night and no one would be there and they wouldn't hang up. The door bell would ring late at night and no one would be there.

One night he was sitting at the lunch table there and he heard footsteps walking up to the door. He opened the door and no one was there. He said he thought to himself, "What am I doing this for?!?!" Shortly after that one he ended up quitting.

The one I remember the most was when he was asleep there and woke up to his shower/bathroom bag falling down off a ledge. When he got up to look and see what happened he said his bag had not just fallen, but flew to the middle of the shower. He picked it up and put it back where it was. He got back into bed, almost fell asleep and it happened again. It didn't just drop it was in the middle of the shower again. He put it back, went to bed and it happened a Third Time. He went back in there picked it up and said, "OK I Won't put it in here!" He put it in his suitcase bag. After that time he brought his roasary beads with him and went to bed with them in his hand and he said they stopped bothering him after that. When he spoke with a coworker about some strange incidents happening there she told him the place has been haunted for years...."

"...She also said when they first opened up they used to play Monopoly during the day and take a break and go out for lunch. When they would come back, all the pieces on the board game would be scattered and moved around.

The last story he mentioned was when he was in the embalming room and there were old white lab coats hanging on hooks with the embalmers names on them. He was looking through an old desk that wasn't used anymore (embalmer had passed away) and found an arthritis bracelet with magnets in there. He took it since he has arthritis and as he took it all these little alarms started going off. He heard all this noise. He opened the door where it was coming from and it was a box of deceased's pacemakers going off. Yikes! He said that since it was one of the embalmers who worked there a long time someone didn't want him taking the bracelet. Wouldn't catch me there overnight - that¡¯s for sure".

Catalina High School - Students have reported that during school events that all bathroom stalls were locked, and many times bathrooms were closed off because of unexplainable floods. Rumor has it that a man had died from a heart attack in the school, and that it might be him that is creating this havoc. Thanks to theshadowlands.net

Catalina High School - Another spirit is that of a school custodian named Martin Valencia, who died in the 1970¡¯s. He was a beloved member of the staff and the stories say that he was especially careful about fellow workers who attempted to pilfer food items from the kitchen or the home economics classrooms. He was so conscientious that the cooks would always leave out treats and snacks for him, which Martin then shared with his co-workers. One day, he suffered a heart attack and passed away while on the job. However, it is said that he has never left the school. According to reports, his ghost still lingers behind and helps with the cleaning. In June 1980, a custodian swore that he saw someone cleaning the restrooms before graduation ceremonies took place. He was in the hallway, a few minutes past midnight, when he heard the metal casters of a garbage container rolling down the hall. He looked and in the dim light, could just make out the figure of a man moving the container along. He saw him turn into the restroom and he thought nothing of it. He assumed that it was one of the other custodians until about one minute later... when he found all of them in the gymnasium setting up chairs! Is Martin Valenica still at his former school? If he is, then many have joked that he seems to have his own methods of cleaning... as trash containers and cleaning supplies often disappear and then turn up in other places, doors slam shut, lights turn off on startled employees and more. Many custodians feel they have been the victims of pranks until they realize that the only explanations for the strange events are ghostly ones. Perhaps someone should check and see if these fellows have been raiding the cafeteria and have incurred Martin¡¯s good-natured wrath? Thanks to Prairieghosts.com

There is a house on West District St. I don't recall the address, but it is on the second block west 6th Ave, second house on the south-side of the street. When I was a kid in the late '70's my parents owned this property, which was
comprised of 2 apartments. Various members of my family, as well as tenants who were not family, occupied these apartments at some point. Almost all of them complained of some kind of occurrences inside the apartments. The complaints varied from the amusing (made beds being undone, refrigerator door opening at
night), to the utmost frightening (the feeling of being attacked while asleep). A very deep hole was discovered on the south-west corner of the back yard. Its possible that is was a well. I was told that something could be seen on the bottom. What it was they would not tell me, but nobody was happy about it. But, I did hear that it could have been the explanations for what was happening inside the house. I know no one was ever contacted about the hole - they just filled it back up.
I don't know who owns or lives there now. My parents sold the property back in the early '80's. Sure would like to know if the people who have lived there and live there now have had any experiences.

The shut off switch for the main set of lights was down at the front of the auditorium and when I was the last one in at night I would walk VERY quickly to the front door after switching off those lights!

The most active places seemed to be;
The projector booth. On at least one instance I saw someone move in the projection booth when I was down on stage and KNEW I was the only person in the building. Ran up there but found no one. Other volunteers mentioned similar experiences.

The mechanical basement. Accessible by stairs around the back of the theatre, this area always had a "vibe".

"Green Rooms" under the stage. The area under the stage was originally planned for dressing rooms but was never finished as vaudeville gave way to films early in the Fox's history. One of our staff REFUSED to go into that area alone. Part of the downtown underground tunnels ran through this area and you can still see where the tunnel was "rocked up" when you descend the southern stairwell. Research into territorial maps also found that the northeast corner of this basement was the location of an "indian well" that was located just outside of the Presidio wall.

Interviews with some of the homeless that made the Fox their home when it was boarded up also shared some creepy stories.

Potential ghosts:
- During original construction, a worker in the auditorium broke his neck when scaffolding collapsed - although he did not die in the theatre but rather latter in the day.
- In the 1950's a man seated in the balcony was reported to ushers as being drunk. They found he had died (probably heart attack) but they maintained the "he's drunk" story as they carried him out so as not to frighten the other patrons. He died up near the projection booth.

¡°When I was working as a courier I would notice that a large painting on the stairwell behind the receptionist was always crooked. Mentioned it once and receptionist told me there was a women ghost in one of the upstairs attorney's offices that used to be a bedroom. She was supposedly seen also descending the stairs. Every day they would straighten the picture and secure it but in the morning it would be out of place again. Their theory was that she would move it when descending the stairs.¡±

A former worker at the club for a long time, says he was working the closing shift. He and a few other employees were finishing up for the night. It was around three or four in the morning. He had his back facing the front door when all of a sudden he felt the sensation of a human being coming right toward him! He turned around and immediately swung out his fist instinctively. Old Tucson Studios - Paranormal phenomena has been reported in several areas of the studios by security guards. The first is the Grand palace saloon. Several ghosts, including one of a little girl, have been spotted throughout the building. The little girl is often spotted on the stairs leading to the second floor. Adjoining the saloon is Rosa's Cafe. The apparition of a young woman has been seen here and reports of unusual noises and moving objects are common place.
The most active location within the studios is the Arizona Theater, also called "The Story teller's. This is a small underground theater that many believe is haunted by a malevolent spirit. Although there are a few exceptions, the ghost mainly makes it presence known to women. When women enter the theater alone and sit in the back row of the theater in the dark, they began to hear noises on the stage which resemble footsteps. The footsteps then "jump" down off the stage and move towards the women at the rear of the theater.
Suddenly, the subtle light coming from the theater's exit lights are blocked as if someone is standing before them. This is following by either a tapping sound or heavy breathing. Usually the women turn on a flash light at this point, revealing that no one is there.
On occasion, the ghost makes its presence known to men. This has only happened to male security guards that the "ghost" doesn't like. They often end up quitting their jobs and the few that have not refuse to enter the theater alone.
The school house is another studio building that has unusual phenomena associated with it. Security guards hear the sound of children and the lights go on and off by themselves. The door also seems to unlock itself, much to the display of the security guards.
The hauntings are not limited to specific buildings however. The ghost of a cowboy has been seen and heard walking about the town's streets. Security guards have heard the sound of footsteps and spurs moving down the streets surrounding the saloon and town hall. One security guard actually saw the "cowboy" walk right past her and through the locked door of one of the studio's shops.
Another phenomena that occurs through the studios is called "Shadow man" by employees. Basically it appears like a dark human figure that seems to follow (or stalk) security guards and visitors.
Other unusual activities that occur are the random turning on of building lights around the studios.

One time, me and my friend went to a movie at the American Home Furnishings building near the Tucson Mall. It was a Thursday night, we settled into our chairs, the rest of the theater was empty and we thought that was awesome. We had the whole theater to ourselves. When the lights went off, I was trying to watch the movie, but I couldn't shake this feeling that there was someone watching me, like a strong presence was there, but I couldn't see the person. I kept this to myself, when I finally told my friend (10 minutes later) that I felt kinda scared because I felt that someone was in there with us, but I didn't know where they were at. She looked me straight in the eye and said she had the same feeling! We both looked around and decided to leave. It was very creepy, and I couldn't enjoy the movie! Anyhow, I heard that movie theater is haunted, came home and told my brother what happened, he said he heard "other" stories about that place too.

1. Mona Wong's husband's ghost on their farm where Trico Road ends at Avra Valley Road.

2. The ruins of the Roland Huff farmhouse west of the HS on Emeigh Road, on the west side of the easternmost 'channel' of Brawley Wash. Huff and his wife were murdered there by a business partner in the 1950's and their bodies were placed in a cross under the bridge over the Santa Cruz on Trico Road many miles away.

3. The Phantom Pima Indian guy on the Bing K. Wong farm (different Wong). You could hear him plowing in a field just south of the Santa Cruz River on the west side of Sanders Road. The unmistakeable sound of a D8 Cat creaking along with a 5 bottom plow could be heard at times on winter nights. I have experienced that myself years ago.

4. La LLarona, the Crying Lady. In the late 1960's some friends on mine were camping out in the Santa Cruz River bed (before it flowed all year from the Tucson effluent) south of the area we then called "Honeaville", now known as Honea Heights. I have heard that awful crying sound drawing closer myself. Yikes!

Saint Mary's Hospital - There are a number of different experiences, such as people seeing someone walking into an elevator and then disappearing, elevators opening into strange places, strange people riding on the elevators with staff, and a host of other things, but the majority of the stories revolve around a nun on the fourth floor. One night, one of the nursing staff was looking down the 4 north hallway and saw a nun standing in the middle of the hall, pointing into a room. The staff member went to see what was going on, but when she got there, the nun had disappeared. In the room that she was pointing at, there was a female patient who was suicidal and was attempting to take her life. The nun was warning the staff. It is, presumably, the same nun that walks with staff along the hallway going from the North halls to the West halls. Sam Levitz Furniture Store on 3430 E. 36th St.
Ghost sightings have taken place for the past six years in the area of the warehouse where furniture is stacked on racks towering 70 feet high. Tommy Guerrero, the store's lead security supervisor, has known about the ghost for a few years.
According to Guerrero, about six years ago an employee was on the top rack and fell backwards trying to pull out a mirror. He died instantly because he was not wearing the mandatory safety lanyard. "Supposedly this guy was a real jerk, and was warned many times about wearing his safety lanyard," said Guerrero. "He fell onto his back pretty hard and died here on site."
Employees that work the early morning shifts around 4 or 5 a.m. have witnessed the spirit of the man who tragically died. One security guard, who recently started working at Sam Levitz, has had a few problems with this ghost. "I've come in the mornings and seen furniture off the racks and on the ground, like somebody pushed it off the top rack in the middle of the night," said Michael Gregg. "It's a real hassle to have to pick up, and sometimes the furniture breaks." Guerrero opens the store early and for the first hour is completely alone. One morning he was in the office and heard loud footsteps down below in the warehouse. "I knew that I was the only one here, so it had to be him," Guerrero said. "It doesn't bother me, but I guess he still thinks he is at work." In the warehouse are 15 gigantic racks where multiple couches, chairs and tables are precisely stacked. This is a colossal warehouse and overwhelming in height. Thanks to Arizona Daily Wildcat

My Husband used to work there and yes it is haunted. He said if you go to a certain spot where the man fell there will be tugging on clothes or a draft. Re: Tucson Modernism Week starts Friday!

Hello,

I just wanted to bring up something I have noticed. ?There is a postcard posted of the old
TTT truck stop on E. Benson Hwy. ?The caption on the photo shows 5461 E. Benson Hwy.
It was actually 4445 E. Benson Hwy.

If you Google Map 4445 E.Benson Hwy. you will see the same exact building occupied
by Rural Metro Fire. ?The cafe is gone but if you go to aerial view you can see where
the building was.

Keep up the good work, love the group!

Tucson Modernism Week starts Friday!

Hello All,

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Tucson Modernism Week is here again! ?If you're not familiar, Tucson Modernism Week is dozens of events, all week long, all over Tucson, celebrating different aspects of the bygone postwar period. ?The same things we talk about here: Mid-century homes, buildings, signs, fashions, car culture, popular culture, design, etc., etc.

There's almost too much for one person to see, but it's worth a try. ?Some events are free and others require tickets. ?Remember, your ticket cost goes directly to benefit the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation which works all year long, usually behind the scenes, to save the things in Tucson we all love. Here's a great way to contribute to a good cause, and get some entertainment and education at the same time.??

Looking forward to seeing you there again this year.

Thanks,

Carlos

Please go explore the website and see dozens of activities.?

If you might like to volunteer, go here...

Re: Ft Lowell School

Did anyone bother to salvage all those lovely bricks, not to mention the new bathroom and water fountain features that were put in just months before they closed, at a hurried pace to get it ready, and a huge cost in overtime?? Who gets the money from that if they do?? Certainly not the taxpayers who paid the extra money.

Hope this new transitional care center is better than the one where my father in law was when he was overmedicated because the care staff didn't want to deal with him.? I can only hope it'll be better managed and the staff better trained in reading the medical charts? for reasons why people with certain conditions are not supposed to receive certain medications.....

Guess with all the "private, non-profit" charter schools we're opening we don't need a nice school that had a good staff and was a good location for the neighborhood kids who were able to walk to school.

Just my opinion.

Catherine

Ft Lowell Elementary School at 5151 E Pima has succumbed to the wrecking ball. The school was closed in 2010 and the property will become home to a transitional care center.

Re: Motel on E Broadway, 1950's

Hello Catherine,
it looks like the motel in question was called the Broadway Plaza Motel at 2100 E. Broadway on the corner at Olsen. It was built some time between 1948 and 1949 and was originally called the? Broadway Plaza Apartments until it shows up as the Broadway Plaza Motel in 1959. As of 1963 is was again called the Broadway Plaza Apartments, then I'm assuming after it was demolished the new building in 1964 was The Arizona Bank. There is a possibility that an aerial photo may show this building in the Gene Magee Collection at the AHS library.

I'm curious, what was the newspaper date in 1964?you were referring to regarding the demolition?
Hope this helps.
-John-
