open calling at Friday's contra

Our next contra dance will be this coming Friday, February 21 at the Channing-Murrary Foundation. The band will be Acoustic Mayhem with Laura Sleade, Ed Hawkes, Lyle Konigsburg & Sue Frankenburg. We will have open calling with a variety of new and experienced callers. If you are interested in calling and haven't already contacted me, let me know. Calling for a group of friendly people that you know is a great way to get started.
As usual there will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30 and the dance will start at 8. Bring your friends to join in the fun and snacks to share at the break. Jonathan |

contra calling workshop on Sunday
Miriam Larson and Matt Turino have arranged a workshop on calling contra dances at the IMC this coming Sunday, February 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. Gail Hintze will be joining them. You don't necessarily have to want to be a caller right now, but if you would like to learn about the mechanics of how contra dances work and what is involved in calling dances, then you should plan to attend. This can be helpful to anyone, even if you never call a dance. And if sometime you think you might like to try calling, you'll have some idea of how it works. Of course, dancers are also needed so those trying to call have someone to call to.
If you attend the workshop and are inspired to give calling a try there will be open calling at our dance on February 22. Jonathan |

Turino's playing for contra Friday

Our next contra dance in Urbana will be this Friday, February 7 at the Phillips Recreation Center. The band will be the Turino Family Band featuring Matt Turino, Tom Turino, Shannon Turino & Claire Johnson. The caller will be Keith Tuxhorn from Springfield. We had a great turn-out at our last dance, so I hope to see lots of people at the dance this week. As usual there will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30 and the dance will start at 8. Bring your friends to join in the fun and snacks to share at the break.

Unmute Sound Engineering Class
Hey Contra Dancers!
Do you want to learn a new skill that might come in handy to help our contra dance out? Check out this sound engineering class and sign up! Unmute Unmute is a free sound engineering course to support women, BIPOC, trans and non-binary, & LBGTQ Communities led by the IMC¡¯s Audio Coordinator & 104.5 WRFU's station manager DJBJ Clark. The course will meet every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. starting February 1st, 2025 to March 1st, 2025. Students will learn basic sound engineering training and be able to practice their training during the IMC¡¯s Open Mic Nights and other events. Our contra dance this coming Friday, January 24 will be held at the Phillips Center in Urbana. This is a change from the original plan of holding the dance at Channing-Murray. So make sure you go to the correct location.
The band for the dance will be Meadowhawk with Amanda Ramey, Claire Johnson & Matt Turino. The caller for the evening will be Miriam Larson. As usual there will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30 and the dance will start at 8. Bring your friends to join in the fun and snacks to share at the break. Remember, the dance this week is at the Phillips Center and not at Channing-Murray. I hope to see everyone there. Jonathan |

English country dancing this Sunday

You are invited to join the Central Illinois English Country Dancers at their dance this Sunday, January 19 from 2 to 5 pm at the Mansfield United Methodist Church, 200 East Illinois St., Mansfield, IL. The Flatland Consort will be providing the music and a group of local callers will be leading the dances. Bring your friends to join in the fun and snacks to share at the break.
