Excellent net tonight!
Good evening group, I just wanted to say I think we had a great net tonight. Whatever we did differently, let's try to keep it this way! With regard to the question of the night, I'd like to suggest we discuss the topic more broadly and perhaps even start the discussion here on the reflector. Tonight's question was "What is a Beam antenna. Give some examples." I think in order to keep folks engaged in the net, you might also ask folks' opinions on their favorite types of if they've ever even used a beam antenna. What are the pros and cons of the beam antenna? One obvious pro is the amount of gain it provides not only to the transmit side but also the receive side. Cons would be that it is not omnidirectional so it requires physically moving or rotating the antenna in order to contact stations not located in its path. other pros or cons might be price range as compared to say, a mag-mount or rubber duck antenna, considering most beams require a mast with a rotor. If the net coordinator agrees, let's start the discussion of next week's question here and try to wrap it up come next week's net time? And on that note, I will be at Tyler Nature Center (TXPWD Division office) on Wednesday morning around 10 or 11 AM if anyone cares to join me for Parks on the Air | POTA | Parks program for amateur radio. Parks on the Air | POTA | Parks program for amateur radio. Parks program for amateur radio, also known as Parks on the Air (POTA), including a map and list of entities for... I will be activating Park K-6588 at the fishing pavilion with my Yaesu FT-857D and G5RV Jr. There is no park admission unlike state parks, so feel free to come and join me! If you would like to assist, I will gladly share the radio. If you are not licensed yet but have the interest in operating, you can still operate as a third-party operator and I will guide you on it. Be prepared for a pile-up though because this park is not regularly covered, so it comes across as a park not yet hunted by most folks! 73's - Jason KE4CPC

Jamboree on the air (JOTA) Oct 20-22 2023
At our meeting, it was discussed briefly that we have the annual Yamboree coming up in less than two weeks and that weekend coincides with the Scouts' Jamboree on the Air. It would benefit the scouts and the Ham radio club to be able to participate in both. I wanted to provide the resources that will connect the two easily for our members. Participating in JOTA is not difficult, all you have to do is set up a radio station where a group of scouts can come and listen, observe and possibly interact as a third party operator. If you're a POTA activator, then you've got everything you need already! Or if you are open to having a small group of kids and adults at your home shack, you may be able to work it that way as well. Here's what the Scouting organization asks of you: Jamboree-on-the-Air You and the scouts can all get a patch for participating! Sort of like a QSL card, more than a participation trophy. The event is the third full weekend in October. Starting anytime Friday evening on the 20th through Sunday the 22nd. It's not a contest or a sprint. It's more of a QSO party for third-party operators. Now, if you want to make an event of it, you may even attract some attention to our ancient hobby and recruit some new members to the ham community! (Wouldn't that be a pleasant surprise?) Once you've got the scouts (I almost said boys, but that's not politically correct today) interested in the event, you can entice them to stay, or come back again to earn their merit badges, plural meaning way more than one. There's a Radio merit badge! There's also an Electronics, Electricity and Digital Technology merit badge. (Last one is new since I was a boy scout.) So that's four elective merit badges and all of those directly apply to the hobby of Amateur Radio. But wait, there's more! Any boy scout seeking the rank of Eagle Scout has about a dozen merit badges that are REQUIRED meaning they have to focus on these. Ham Radio can help with about half of them. (Gee, imagine that!) Emergency Preparedness, Communication, Citizenship in the... Community, Nation and World. And while they are at the EOC or Fire station talking about EmComm, you might advise they get their First Aid merit badge too, so they can get started on the E-Prep merit badge as well. Find all the merit badge requirements here: All Merit Badges A-Z All Merit Badges A-Z Merit Badges A-Z Merit Badges A-Z Search Eagle Required Eagle Required Eagle Required Eagle Required Eagle ... This is an excellent opportunity to reach out to the community and share our interests with them in a way that benefits their organization. I think every radio club should have this detail on hand should the scouts come knocking. But you can also be the one to do the knocking by reaching out to the scouts first and invite them! Who knows, you might have the next batch of ham operators coming into your club! (circa 1993: Boy Scout Troop 784, Clermont, FL. Ed Fong Antennae
All: I am still a member of the Richardson Wireless Klub. They are planning to group order some Ed Fong Anttenna at a club discount. There are JPoles (2m/70cm), triband and high gain UHF-only antennae available. Ordering continues through the end of September. If there is interest in UAARC, I can be your representative to place a group UAARC order with the K5RWK group, and pick the order up in Richardson. Let me know if there is interest. I can be reached at neelyll@.... Larry KI0R Announcement from K5RWK monthly newslertter follows: Group Buy of Ed Fong Antennas By Michael Masterson WT9V Well folks, it¡¯s that time again, As Ed offered during his recent presentation at the July RWK meeting, we¡¯re going to do another group buy for Ed Fong antennas. Ed pays his students to prepare the materials for the antennas that he assembles and tunes himself. Thus the proceeds from the antenna sales go towards helping tomorrow¡¯s RF engineers get educated. The last time we did this (in 2019), RWK produced the largest order Ed had ever had to that point. Will we top it this time? Who knows? We¡¯ve got a bunch of new people since the last time ¨C here¡¯s your chance to save up to 20%! We¡¯re going to take orders from RWK Members through the end of September, and then we will send one combined order to Ed. I¡¯ve set up a order page on our square account to make the ordering and payment process easier (at least I hope it will be). I listed the regular prices from Ed¡¯s Antennas web page, as well as the discount we¡¯re getting with the group buy. Once the shipment is in, you can pick up the goods at the next club meeting, or if you like, you can arrange to pick things up at my place. If you want to have things shipped to you, there will, of course, be an extra charge for that. Also, due to the size, the TBJ-1 (tri-band) won¡¯t be something that I¡¯ll turn around and ship ¨C if you can¡¯t pick it up from us, you¡¯ll have to get that from Ed directly. As a reminder, most all the antennas are the antenna elements and PVC endcaps only. You¡¯ll need to go down to Lowe¡¯s or Home Depot and get a particular stock number of PVC pipe that Ed has tested and made sure won¡¯t interfere with the antenna¡¯s performance (in his testing, he¡¯s found some PVC that had metallic particles that kept the antennas from working properly). The link for the RWK Square page is: https://k5rwk.square.site/shop/ed-fong-group-buy/4 If you have any questions at all, please contact me (WT9V) before you order.

FW: ARRL Member Bulletin for July 23, 2023
Preview FYI¡ If you are having trouble reading this message, you can see the original at: http://www.arrl.org/member-bulletin?issue=2023-07-23 July 23, 2023 ARRL Member Bulletin Archive ARRL Home Page A Message from ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR Dear ARRL members, Yesterday, the ARRL Board of Directors completed their second annual meeting. I'm writing to let you know that they made the tough, but necessary, decision to increase the regular membership dues rate to $59 a year starting January 1, 2024 (see 2024 Dues Rates). Additionally, we have chosen to separate the printed, mailed magazine from regular membership. Members will be able to choose whether they want to add-on a print subscription to any of our magazines including QST, On the Air, QEX, and NCJ. All members will continue to have online, digital access to each of these four magazines and the digital archive as part of their regular membership benefits. This is only the second time in 22 years that ARRL has raised our dues. It is a necessary part of ensuring ARRL is supported so we can continue to promote and fight hard for our Amateur Radio Service, while providing benefits and services for our members that increase your knowledge and enjoyment of ham radio. To help us make this decision, we invited every ARRL member to participate in a survey in May. Over 20,000 members responded (you can view the survey results here). We know from the survey results that most of you will find the new rate reasonable, or even ask why we didn't set it higher. We also know that some may find the rate is too high. As I've shared with many of you during my visits at hamfests and conventions, each of us has a responsibility to be active participants, and to support ARRL if we want to increase our ranks and ensure a lasting legacy for amateur radio's future. You told us that you value ARRL's advocacy efforts, including spectrum defense, standing up to regulators and policymakers, and our work in other areas that defend, promote, and grow amateur radio - including STEM outreach to schools, teachers, and youth. There is no other organization that is working harder to advance a vision that allows any citizen to explore, develop, and practice radio communications and radio technology. Your feedback showed us the many benefits, services, and programs you use - from Logbook of The World, to the work done by the ARRL Lab to test equipment for product reviews. While our magazines topped the list of benefits, many of you also shared that your reading preferences have changed. Some of you prefer print, and increasingly members prefer digital. As a result, for those who prefer print, you will be able to subscribe to QST and/or On the Air magazine. Again, all members will continue to have access to the digital editions of all four ARRL magazines. Have you ever heard a Life Member say, "I got a good deal when I signed up for Life Membership 25 (or 30, or 40...) years ago." They're right! They got a good deal, but continuing to serve Life members is not sustainable without making some changes. So, we're going to freeze new applications for the program, not adding any new Life Memberships until we can price the offering to be revenue neutral over its term. And, again, as more members prefer digital, we'll be asking current Life Members to opt-in if they want to continue to receive QST by mail. The cost of doing business goes up every year. During the last couple of years, the costs associated with printing and postage have increased significantly. We've cut and delayed hiring for some positions on our professional staff - one of the smallest teams we've had staffing our headquarters in Newington, Connecticut, in years. We are also continuing to examine other cost-saving measures, but we cannot go further without reducing or eliminating benefits and programs which our members have told us are important to them. I can assure you that the ARRL Board exercises due diligence and oversight in making sure your association is a good steward of your membership dollars. The reality is that ARRL does a

[fayettegaares] Tuesday ARES Forum 2
Hey y'all! In Fayette County GA, they were discussing some things that we as ARES members can do in the case of any kind of railroad incident should occur. I worked for the railroad for 21 years in safety. I had some good pointers to offer them and I wanted to also share them with UAARC as well. Here in East Texas we have Union Pacific, BNSF and about a half dozen short line and industrial carriers. Outside of that, the info is pretty mainstream. Know the difference between CSX, Norfolk Southern and any industrial railroad not affiliated with either. CSX is 1-800-232-0144. Norfolk Southern is 800-946-4744 or 800-453-2530. Every railroad crossing in the country has an Emergency Contact placard that looks like this: Even private roads have this placard. When reporting any incident to the dispatcher, the Crossing ID "234567-X" is beneficial because it refers uniquely to that crossing's location. The dispatcher even has Lat/Lon coordinates for that crossing on their database in case there's ever any confusion about which of the 7 railroad crossings are on Lake Ave. over the course of 2-6 miles. These crossings are landmarks that both the Railroad and First Responders can coordinate on. While emergency responders are looking for a street name and nearest cross street, the railroad will use a Milepost and decimal to ID the crossing. When referring to a train, it's beneficial to know which way the train was going. In Georgia, all railroads refer to the traffic as going "Timetable North" or "Timetable South" even if the rails are going East and West. But that's not what you need to know. All you need to be able to do is identify whether the train was going "Right to Left" or Left to Right" when you are facing the tracks at the crossing, and on which side of the tracks you are on. If you can give that description to the person taking your call, they will be able to determine the direction of travel of your train. If there are multiple tracks, it's also beneficial to be able to describe whether it was the track closest to you, furthest away, in the middle, etc. Every railcar and locomotive has a unique Identifier called a Reporting Mark. These help the railroad identify and track each car as they pass through the railroad network. A reporting mark has 2 to 4 alpha letters and from 1 to 6 numbers. They are located on the left sides of the cars facing their sides and on the top left corners of the ends of the cars. Every train is required to have a list of their cars and the order that they are in. So if you are reporting NDYX 163482 the railroad company will be able to see that car is 67th from the locomotives at the front. The car next to that is EEC 16 and they will see that it is 66th from the front. And so on... (Of course this is assuming it's not painted over with graffiti) And then finally, HAZMAT cars are equipped with placards on the right side and at the ends of each railcar that contains a HAZMAT or a residue. Not all railcars, especially tanks, contain hazardous materials. For instance, on the line I was working for, we got 6-8 tank cars of sweetener (corn syrup) every week for a beverage company and 15-20 tanks a week full of food grade cooking oil for a plant that bottled it for retail use. A lot of tank cars have their products stenciled on the side but unless there's a HAZMAT placard accompanying it, then the content
