88 Toyota RV - been sitting for 10 years?
I like to ask, if a 88 Toyota RV that has not run for 10 years, a v6 motor, 145K kms, or maybe miles, needs lots of camper love, but would the truck part be redeemable, no rust and looks clean, if one pulled the spark plugs and soaked inside with oil, and wait a few days would you think the motor be able to start, minding if all the extra details were tended to like fuel pumps and anything else, looking here for advice on yes no or solid rust inside the motor. This would need to be put on trailer home, don't want to buy scrap metal. Thank you for any thoughts, opinions & wisdom's, .... thank you! Bruce. |
I assume you are looking at this vehicle with the option to purchase "as is" and without seeing it run.
So what can we do to the vehicle before purchase and moving to increase confidence ?? ?I think I would disconnect the fuel line to the engine? ( dont want old bad fuel pumping to the injectors)?
and take all the spark plugs out? ?and put a few squirts of fresh engine oil into all the cylinders.? Then I would attach battery cables or insert new battery and see if the starter will spin the engine a little bit
but no so much you burn up your starter.? When you drain and refill the tank with just a gallon or two,
I would uuse fuel that does not have any alcohol in it.? I think the main issue here is confirming that the engine is not seized and if the cylinders were dry that this? spinning of the engine would not scuff the cylinders too much..

Marvel mystery pil in cylinders is incredible way to free up engine, I had to do on an oldsc324 which sat for 30 yrs and wouldn't turn. After a couple applications and weeks it turned by starter and roared to life. Only oil my mechanics use for this purpose

Then again, one would wonder why it hadn’t been run for 10 years.
Barring the issue of the 3.0 V6 being famous for very costly maintenance when needed, it seems like a good bet. However, if the reason for the 10 years could be related to a blown head gasket for example, then one might reconsider. The dipstick would be the place to start. If that looks unsuspicious, then put a good battery in there and see if it will turn over. If it will without issues, go to Harbor Freight and buy a leak down tester for about $25 probably, and then You Tube how to use one, and that should tell you most of the rest of the story. A compression tester is cheap at Harbor Freight too. If it seems likely the head gasket might be blown,… that’s bad news on a 3.0. |
I have overhauled and replaced several motors the first thing I would do in this situation is remove all the spark plugs squirt some oil into each spark plug hole and turn it over by hand with a wrench or socket on the crankshaft bolt. After a few cranks by hand it should turn freely or if it is seized up it won't turn at all then you got bigger problems. |
