floor plans / gas

TalariaEnterprises.com Museum Store

Thank you all for the floor plan info. Very interesting! Hope to go out an
look at a few this weekend!

Just curious how the gas prices are doing in different regions of the
country...I'm in Los Angeles and unleaded gas is up to $1.80 - $1.90. What
about the other parts of the country?

Also, I assume that the Dolphin takes unleaded...or does it require the
premium grade?

Listen for timing chain noise on start up.

Have the seller turn on the refer and air-
con and have them running when you get there.

Read the Archives.

Jack A2
Hey Jack what does timing chan noise sound like? How is it different
from a knocking noise before the oil gets to parts of the engine?
Thanks, Pete PS Put a mp3 or wav on the file section.

Here's mine:
Rear Bath w/Sep shower and closet, curb side dinette in front of side
door and cupboard/tv stand. Street side closet over heater (forward
of shower), then dual sinks then 4 burner stove/oven then fridge
under small counter and cupboard. With a 46 x 80 overcab bed.
1985 21' Toyota Dolphin. Take care, Pete

Green. Re: Nate

Nate.

Love the green.

After the 20th of May I am free!! And we have some
Michigan wide trips planned.

I have canceled my plans to go to Astoria then north
to Alaska next month, due to the gas prices. (Said to
go up to $3 a gal out west.)

I expected to get up to Alpena next week but I got behind
in my work and can't go. What a bummer, as the temp up
there, right on the big lake, was 86f yesterday.

Are you still planning your trip out west ? Keep us posted

Re: Chinook

William Agans

Hi,
I bought a 1978 Toyota Chinook Plus 2 (has a bunk over
the cab. 20R engine and 127,000 miles. I am now on a
trip from Creston, Iowa to Florida by way of Missouri,
Oklahoma, and Alabama. Have driven the unit 1755
miles on 91 gals of gas. Speed vary from 45 mph in the
hills (big hills in eastern Okla) to 60 and 65 on the
interstate s. (Not so hilly)

Mine has auto air and no roof air for the coach. I am
traveling alone and find it has ample room. I have a
porta potty but don't use it. I plan to drive about
4500 miles in the next few weeks.

Good luck with yours.

New Orleans

I'm in New Orleans at a library that's about 20 miles away from the
city. It was a terrible windy trip - so windy that my arms were
tired
from struggling with the steering wheel! There HAS to be something I
can do to make the steering better. I'm used to the semi's, but the
gusts of wind are really scary sometimes. Maybe I need an alignment
or
can get some sort of stabilizer bar, or shocks, or SOMETHING. This
is
no fun to drive in the wind!!!!!!!!!!

At the conference, I had trouble parking the RV. No one wanted to
let
me park in their lot - even though it will fit in one parking space.
The Hilton parking lot (which was the hotel for the conference and
adjacent to the convention center) wanted to charge me $55.00 to park
for one day - yes you read it right.....DAY parking. They charged
cars $15.00/day. In addition, I finally found a lot to take my RV
and
was late for the presentation. I was the last of three to present so
it worked out OK. When I parked the RV there was a guy sleeping on
the ground up against the building where I parked. It took me an
hour
and a half to drive the 18 miles into the city because of the
traffic!

I'm sorry if anyone on this list is from New Orleans, but I find it
to
be a dangerous, dirty, depressing, and unfriendly city. I'll think
twice if I ever return here! Even the librarians were rude at the
library I'm at now! *sigh*

I'm filing this trip under "The Trip from you know where"!

Re: Sounds like a Deal/but maybe not!

Michael Smith

I can say it seems like a pretty good deal based on the fact that Farmers
Insurance Company has offered me $6745 for my 84 that was totaled. And that
all the 86s I have seen have the 1ton floating axle and are fuel injected
and that a rig that is fiberglass that has always been stored inside often
looks brand new. The latest one I bought did. Note in the add that the price
is $6900 slash ofr. Indicating the price is not firm. The axle would
ofcource would have to be examined and everything checked out but I dispute
your claim that the going price for low milage fuel injected 1986 Sunraders
that have been owned by one owner and stored indoors is $4,900. I stand by
my first post that this sounds like a good deal.

I'd go buy it myself if I didn't already have an 88 and the 84.

This ad tells nothing important.

Auto trans? 1 Ton axle ? And 2k over market price.

How can you say "Its a pretty good deal".

86 Sunraders are worth 5k. A little more for killer
clean. If they don't have the good axle, $2,500 -
3,000. All above a lot less if you hear the timing
chain rattle on start up.

IMO we should not mis-lead our newcomers. We have seen,

Toyota Floorplans

For anyone interested,

There are five main floor plans in the Toyotas with a couple of
minor variations. The brand name alone won't tell you what
floorplan it is, as they all made several. Get acquainted with
them first so you know which one you like best. All (except some
Chinooks) have an over-cab bed, although in some it may only
be a twin size. Here they are in order of popularity/availability,
descriptions starting from the back:

1) Rear bath (with separate shower), streetside kitchen,
streetside sofabed, curbside full dinette (either back of, or front
of door). (Sunraders may have captain's chairs instead of bench
seats for the dinette.)

2) Rear bath (with separate shower), streetside kitchen,
streetside sofabed, curbside L-shaped mini-dinette, and
captain's chair. (Winnebago variation: no mini-dinette, full
dinette in place of sofabed.)

3) Extra large rear dinette (variation: curbside rear dinette and
streetside sofa bed), side combo bath (shower stall includes the
potty, or sink folds down over potty), front curbside kitchen.

4) Rear bath (with separate shower), curbside dinette (either
front of, or back of door), streetside sofabed, streetside front
kitchen (with fridge behind passenger seat).

5) Rear streetside corner combo bath (as above), curbside
corner kitchen, dinette or captain's chairs, sofabed.

There may even be others not included in this list.

If you learn what's out there before you buy, then you won't later
come across a floorplan you like better.

As for prices on the more recent years, you can figure something
like this (if the miles are average): A 1989 from a private party,
price about $9000, average miles = 65,000; 1990 about
$10,000; 1991 about $11-12,000; 1992 about $12 -14,000;
1993 on up. Add about $400 for a generator. Add another
$several hundred if the miles are low, or subract as much if the
miles are high. As for earlier years, a good price would be about
$1000 less for each decreasing year. (Ex: 1987 = $7000, 1985 =
$5000, etc.) You can expect to pay about $1 -2000 more overall if
you buy from a dealer, because supposedly they have checked
all the systems thoroughly, and for that extra price they should be
giving you some kind of warranty.

Good luck in your search. Tika

More Questions

Here are a two more questions to ask, and no doubt others may
think of more to add to this list.

-- Has the vehicle ever been in an accident or needed
unexpected repairs? (Explain.)
-- Do you have all the instruction manuals? Truck chassis,
motorhome systems, etc?

If you are an informed buyer, you won't be in for any
disheartening surprises. Let us all hear what you find.

Tika

Performance upgrades on 22RE

Hello All!!

I'm still researching the most cost efficient upgrades for the 22RE
motor. What I've found so far is to that you want to increase the
amount of air flow (intake), spark, and outflow (with headers, or
better exhaust system).

I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all the web sites, I've visited
them all.

Britt

thank you!

Hello all.....I hope I am doing this correctly. I would like to say
thank you to everyone who responded so warmly to me. Until I get the
Chinook in my possesion I really don't have any questions at this time.
But I'm sure that you will soon get tired of seeing my name on your
e-mail. *grinning*

Dear Tika,

Thank you for this useful list of questions. Yes, we are in the process of
looking for a Dolphin, 5-speed, approx. $5000, in the Los Angeles / Southern
California Area. We have never owned an RV and are finding this search a
little daunting given all the mechanical issues involved in looking for a
car and a home in one (i.e. electrical, etc.).

This list is so helpful as are all the previous posts. Its also great to
read about all of the enthusiasm for Toyotas!

QUESTION: Does anyone know of a source for a layout plan of the interior of
a Dolphin vs. and Odyssey or other Toyota RVs. It would be great to preview
a layout plan before driving around town to look at the RVs since we would
like to set up a small office area so that we can take our internet business
on the road with our laptop.

Thank you all!

According to my 1991 manual, " your transmission is fitted with a
driving pattern selector button (ETC) which allows you to select
either "normal" or "power" to suit your driving condition. For
ordinary driving, Toyota recommends that you use "normal" position
for fuel economy. For powerful acceleration, use the "power position.
In the "power" position, the "power" position indicator light is on
and the transmission is shifted up and down at a higher vehicle speed
than in the "normal" position. As to what "ETC" stands for only
Toyota knows I guess. Hope this helps. It didn't do anything for me

Read the Archives of this list before you call.

Axles and Transmissions are the key things you
need to be aware of.

Check the AC and Refer by having the the seller turn
them on before you get there.

Unit is priced about 1k high for an 84. BTW my book shows
