TinySA ULTRA calibration reset error

I set the band 1MHz to 3 GHz
PRESET...STORE...STORE1

I perform the calibration
CONFIG...LEVEL CAL...CALIBRATE 100 kHz TO 5.34 GHz...CALIBRATE

I will connect HP8657B generator, out level -60 dBm
TinySA: 100 MHz -60.3 dBm
??????? 500 MHz -60.3 dBm
??????? 750 MHz -60.5 dBm
??????? 900 MHz -60.4 dBm
??????? 1600MHz -60.8 dBm
Excellent accuracy! Congratulations.

Turn off TinySA...Turn on TinySA...PRESET...1000kHz 3GHz
I connect the HP8657B generator, out level -60 dBm
TinySA: 100 MHz -60.3 dBm
??????? 500 MHz -60.3 dBm
??????? 750 MHz -60.5 dBm
??????? 900 MHz nothing
??????? 1600MHz nothing
Above 800 MHz the sensitivity is very poor, calibration is lost.

TinySA ULTRA S/N SU-22110028? FW 1.3.510-g7b602fc

I can't replicate this.?
The loss of sensitivity above 800MHz indicates the device does not switch to ultra mode when asked to scan above 800MHz.
Can you disable/enable ultra mode after loading the preset and check if the sensitivity above 800MHz comes back?

Hi, Erik!

When I turn on TinySA, Ultra Mode is marked as on. When I turn Ultra Mode off and on again, the sensitivity on the upper band is OK!

The error is therefore in the UltraMode reset.

And indeed, when I turn on TinySA, even when UltraMode is on, it cannot set frequencies above 800 MHz
I have to turn Ultra Mode off and back on.

Thanks, Mirek

Thank you for the very quick reply, Eric!

I did CLEAR CONFIG according to your advice and the behavior is as it should be, it is ok!

But it is OK only until I set the range from 1 to 100 MHz and save it as STORE AS STARTUP. After that, the behaviour is the same as before, i.e. bad.
So I must not set the lower band range as STARTUP.
Thanks for the help!

Will see if I can replicate this and find the cause.

Next I tested...
When I set the upper band and save it as STARTUP, when I turn it on, the STOP frequency is set to 800 MHz and the upper band behaves as off again.
The bad behavior is somehow related to using the STORE AS STARTUP function.
As long as I do not use the STORE AS STARTUP function after CLEARCONFIG, the behavior is OK.

The startup function itself doesn't work somehow, when TinySA is turned on it always sets the last state before shutdown and it doesn't matter what was saved STORE AS STARTUP.

Only a limited set of parameters (Attenuation, start/stop freq) is restored back to before shutdown, all others come from STORE AS STARTUP
But after startup you can do LOAD STARTUP to restore everything back to the saved startup configuration

Hi Erik, -Reading MirkD's description of his issue with the ULTRA, mine has exhibited the same behavior. Ran into issues requiring resetting of the Ultra Mode, even though it was checked, in order to set to a higher frequency than 800Mhz. I'll keep an eye on what you guys come up with regarding this.

Another issue I noted is in the interface of the Ultra with the latest TinySA -App, 1.1.20.1.I have updated the FW with the app with no issues whatever. However, if I use the instrument set up (four arrows on the left), the program loads the Tiny SA set up. If I import a frequency range from 0MHz (to whatever), the program will not display sweep. If I change the sweep range in the program, from .000001Hz (to whatever), the program sweeps normally. On the instrument, if I set a low frequency of .000001Hz (to whatever), the program imports this and sweeps normally.?Appears the program doesn't like the 0Hz (as the original setup on? the Ultra came from Zeenko).

I tried reloading the older FW in the instrument, no change, and tried an older version of the App, no change.

I tried my older Tiny SAs and found when I set the range to 0Hz (to whatever) the App uploaded the setup, but loaded the low frequency as .000001 Hz. The Ultra loads the low frequency as 0Hz. if set to that on the Ultra. Appears the low freq must be a frequency of at least 1Hz.?

Not a critical issue as long as the behavior is known.

By the way,as I work primarily in GHz range frequencies, using a 6GHz test generator, I find the instrument within 0.5dB of the generator output level and the frequency is very close as well. To get an accurate instrument at this price range that goes as high as 6GHz and that compares favorably with commercial instruments at 30X the cost, is a monumental achievement. Congrats to you and the team that developed this.?

Hi, Erik,
I'm testing version 512 (TinySA reports it as 511). The bug with the ultra band restoration seems to be fixed. Only when switching mode to generator and back, the range is always set to 0 to 800 MHz in SA. Excellent work!

Should be ok now.

The generator and the SA use the same backup locations for frequency and span so when switching between the modes the frequency will always be reset.

Okay, Eric, I understand.
I'm gonna describe another little problem. Example:
I set the frequency to 50 to 100 MHz.
I click on the marker, the marker becomes active.
Then I execute: MARKER... MARKER OPS...CENTER
The action executes correctly, but after the action, a triangle appears in front of SPAN on the bottom right of the display, indicating that SPAN is active. However, Jog does not change the value of SPAN where the triangle is, but changes the value of CENTER.
But I think after the OPS CENTER action the marker should remain active, Jog should still move the marker.

Hi, Eric,
I've also noticed that when I change the brightness of the display, this setting only applies until TinySA is turned off. It would be good if the brightness setting was part of STORE AS STARTUP.

Today I was using TinySA (with RF probe) to repair a home made UHF transceiver and it was very pleasant to work with. Beautiful instrument!
