Self Test Fail

Hi,

?

Just bought a TinySA, and having issues with the self test.

?

I’ve updated to the latest FW, and ran the Level Cal and tried 3 different SMA jumpers!

?

Test 7,8,9 are failing!

?

Sometimes 9 will pass but mostly not.

?

Sometimes it lists a fail, and sometimes it will say critical.

?

I’ve attached screenshots of the 3 fail tests.

?

Otherwise in the limited use, the TinySA seems to be running OK? Should I be concerned about this?

?

Thanks

?

David

You should be concerned about tests 7 and 8 failing
Can you open the case and post a picture of the component side of the PCB?
If possible, after removing the shields, they can easily be lifted

Hi Erik,

Thanks for getting back to me... I have attached a picture as requested...

I didn’t have to remove the shields as there was none on the board. I’m guessing this is maybe my problem?

Is this a manufacturing issue or do I have maybe have an early version without shields??

Do I need to contact the seller in Australia??

You are the (un)happy owner of the first clone outside China!!!!!!!
Ask you money back as this one will never work well

Thanks Eric,

Do I get a prize!!

I’ll contact the seller in Australia... ?I’ve bought from them before and found them to be good, and I suspect that they may be unaware they are selling fakes, so I will not give them bad advertising here, until I know more!

Cheers

And can you post pictures of the box and the front/back of the case to help people recognize a clone (if there are errors in the copy)

I have the same Errors.

Sorry, i thing you have a clone just like me.

One more here

I know that Eric has already ID this as a clone. Can you take a photo of the back of the unit. This will also help others IDing clones. I think Eric said that clones do not have S/N on the back of the unit. Would be interesting to see what the back of your unit looks like..

Thanks,

What exactly is it that is failing, as all clones seem to have the same screenshot which should be a bandpass but looks like a flat response with a kink in it.

Are the 400mhz saw filters missing?

Can they be inserted, as presumably the circuit board will have been copied from original, so presumably there would be space to insert them.

I hate to say this, but you may have a bad clone. I have ran the self test on my two SA's after updating the firmware and they both passed all tests.
The other thing could be a bad solder connection on the board.
Just a thought.

Yes,
? If these clones are originating from a single source then:
? 1. The back of the unit will not have a white sticker with a serial number.
? 2. "Tiny Spertrum Analyzer" on the back will have "Spectrum" miss-spelled.
? 3. "AVDIO STATIC DISCHARGE" on the back will have "AVOID" miss-spelled.

? The additional give away, without opening the case of the unit, is that foam cutout inserts are used instead of molded plastic inserts for packaging.??

? Sorry some users are being duped into purchasing an inferior product.? The tinySA is in short supply at recommended suppliers and I can understand why some buyers might look outside the supply chain.

Steve,
? ?Erik spent a lot of time engineering the BPF and that knowledge cannot be copied as easily as cloning a PCB.? The tinySA hardware is not open source so I would think any cloner would have a hard time getting all the nuisances exactly right.? In addition? to the band pass filtering, there is the question of what degree the lack of shielding contributes to the performance degradation.

? If I purchased a clone I would ask for a refund, and would only do a failure analysis out of curiosity if the seller refunded my purchase and told me to just keep the clone.

- Herb

Yes, I would agree on going for the refund, but if one was left with an unuseable carcass, it seems a pity to confine it to the Universal Storage System. I suppose the battery and screen might be useful as spares for future need.

If everyone with a clone demanded refunds and made a big fuss, then the Tinysa clones might die out.

The frequency is also very inaccurate. TXing 146.420Mhz on my VHF transceiver reads 146.417 on any RBW too

Hi David,

unluckily I bought the same kind of misbehaving tinySA clone from KKmoon via Amazon.

I checked the internals and found out, that (....deleted by Erik to prevent cloners from learning, If you want to know what to do, send me a private message...)
Best regards,
