Re: Manual fault finding

Yesterday I have executed the steps on this page. The hint regarding the 0 Hz vertical line is especially helpful. In my case, this vertical line is present, and as such, no complex repair is to being expected. The attenuation function is okay.
LNA is clearly defect and because the test signal shows only -55 dBm on the spectrum, the switch should be defective, too.
Thus I'd have to replace the switch and the LNA, not the attenuator.

Section Fault finding with oscilloscope:
I don't find L1 and L7 (HW 0.4.5.1).

BTW: I now believe what "LOW OUTPUT" on top of the screen means: the bottom connector, not something like low level voltage.

In general I se need to implement any changes to this page.

I've added a page to the wiki describing some steps for manual fault finding.
Could some of the users that have (had) problems with their HW have a look at this page and check if it helps them locating the probable faulty component(s)

Re: Self-test error and does not continue

In my case, D4 seems not to conduct current at all. My diode test (DMM, applies 2.5V open voltage) does not show any diode voltage, regardless the direction. Perhaps, it's a bidirectional zener device with over 2.5V threshold in both directions.
The diode however is soldered, but it is a bit side tilted. What type should I use as replacement - if the diode is defect (abnormally not as short).

Re: Problem with calibration and self test ZS-407

Hm, you're having a newer version of TinyUltra than I have. Yours has a 7.3 GHz Ultra range while mine has 5.3 GHz... (HW v. 0.4.5.1.1 instead of 0.5.4.).

Re: hardware defect

Sorry for the late response.
I have an original product - bought nov. 2023 at ELESHOP, so counterfeit is not an issue.
Thus I got aware of being able to send it in for repair, but - today - after operating the "Fault Finder for the Tiny..." instructions, I'd order the parts as indicated, since the defects are probably due to own handling errors.

I don't know what "support page" you were on before but this is the only place where the developer Erik supports the tinySA products.? Read this post about failing self-tests before asking more questions.
?
A couple of points:
  • This group only supports genuine tinySA products.? Post a picture of the front and back of your device in order to determine if you have a counterfeit or genuine product.
  • The selftest requires that one of the supplied cables be connected between the two ports.
  • If you have a scope measure the output level of the 30 MHz. cal output with a 50 ohm load. ? It should be close to -26 dBm

The tinySA Ultra is not an open-source design so its full schematic has not been released to the public.? I believe you have to remove U22 from the circuit instead of just jumping it to verify operation:

?

The input switch is U22, type number XA17-G4K.? A sign of a defective switch is when turning on the calibration output, instead of -35dBm, it shows -50dBm or less.
Unsolder U22, install a jumper, and without turning on LNA, everything should work.
?
If so, then change the switch.

After the U22, it's the pe4312. I managed to find its datasheet. As for the U22, I couldn't find anything, it only has A79 written on its body. Do you happen to know exactly the value of the U22?

My laptop is usb3 only and I have not had a single connectivity problem at all. So I don’t think that usb3 can be blamed for most issues. Same thing with windows 11 being blamed in the same way. That hasn’t affected me either.?

Is it a computer that has both USB2 and USB3 ports?
If yes try a computer that has only USB2
There is a known incompatibility with USB3, check the WIKI and the user group comments.

Most of the attempts are 2.0. The primary connection I am using is 2.0. During my "various" ports attempts I did try a 3.0.

Re: USB / Serial connectivity issue

Thanks Roger. I am not sure I have a rig with only USB2. I had searched for solutions and ideas before posting.? There is a very definite change in the behavior of the device. The computer and ports that connected well for a day no longer connect. I have listed what I have tried. In addition I ran Zadig to see if that might help to replace the driver, but the device is not listed.

Indeed something changes below -72 dBm.
That is the reason for the parameter?

Re: TinySA Ultra+ - Signal generator level error

I wonder if there is more going on than simply component spec variations.
?
From the Spec Sheet for the Signal Generator mode, it says:
"Level accuracy +/- 2dB up to 800Mhz between -72dBm and -19dBm, less accuracy below -72dBm, even less accuracy below -110dBm"
?
This seems to imply that perhaps something changes in the Sig Gen circuitry in the -70 dBm area (and below) that affects accuracy.
?
This is right where I was seeing the degradation in the accuracy of the signal output level that I noted in my original post.
?
I may try the suggestion to enter an offset to see if that works, especially for the -80 dBm area where it was off by about 3.5 dBm.
?
Otherwise, I think I will use the TinySA Ultra+ attenuator down to -60 dBm, and then use external attenuators to achieve lower signal levels.? This seems like it could provide better accuracy at very low signal levels.
?
Nelson

Re: TinySA Ultra+ - Signal generator level error

This offset is due to component spec variations
You can correct this offset using the serial USB command
leveloffset out_switch <correction value>
where the correction value is in dB

TinySA Ultra+ - Signal generator level error

NelHau

System: v1.4-192-g73fe677

While checking the output levels of the signal generator, I noticed an odd behavior at signal levels below -70 dBm.

When checked against a bench top spectrum analyzer, the signal levels were measured to be within about 0.5 dBm from -18.5 dBm to -70 dBm. However, when going from -70 dBm to -80 dBm, the output signal was only about -76 dBm. And then farther below that level the measured output levels were also generally off.

I first when down by -10 dBm steps from -50 dBm to the minimum at -115 dBm, and then went up in +10 dBm steps to -55 dBm.

Photos below.

Re: TinySA Ultra Calibration Fail.

The drop in gain above 2.2 GHz is very consistent and has fully been compensated in the factory calibration.
Above 6 GHz the ZS405/406 LNA is useless and better be disabled

The error I get on my laptop is "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)". It seems I must have a defective/failed USB port on the SA. The SA works well in every other respect.
