Original EMD paintshop drawing for TAG
Some time back I came across the original Electromotive Division concept/paintshop drawings for TAG's original GP7 order. On the back it is stamped "this drawing is in the process of being changed" and there is a March 23rd 1951 date stamp. I have copies of the drawings for the GP18 #50 and the GP38 #80 but had never seen a drawing for the three GP7s. It looked to me like the drawing for the 50 was simply the GP7 drawing repurposed to show the Dave Hedges monogram. Remember the GP7 and the GP18 were similar whereas the GP38 was a good bit different. Note the original design for the herald. I for one am glad they went back to the drawing-board. The drawing is far too big for my scanner so I was unable to scan anything else. But in addition to the arrowhead nose herald, another notable difference was the lack of any herald on the underside of the cab window. In the original there is a large road number instead. On the drawing it is 700. I have attached a drawing of the 80. It has been "blueprint reversed" at some point and this has caused issues. I have good blueprint copies of TAG 50 and 80 I just can't scan them. At any rate, compare the nose of both and be glad they made those changes. Warren

Look at this on eBay
I can not be sure but I believe this may not be an original slide. That it may in fact be a duplicate. I have a similar slide in a “red border” mount fitting of the era it was taken. The fact that it is in a generic non-Kodak mount makes me think it is a copy slide. If it goes for about what it is now it is a worthy image to add to your collection. But if it gets into the bidding stratosphere like TAG slides sometime do, then be aware you may be bidding on something not worth that price. There is another TAG diesel slide on eBay. It may also be a dupe. For the uninitiated a dupe slide never scans well nor will it render a good print. This appears to be an image taken of the scooters after they were retired but before they were scrapped. Early 1951. [lnrr] L&N Coil-steel gondolas
Warren, The L&N Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, Volume One, features several L&N covered gondolas. On page 74, there is a photo of new #56898, a sister car to the one in the photo you sent. Here is the caption for the photo of #56898: L&N 56898, series 56880-56899 100-ton GBSR; 52’ 6” IL; 2,401 cu. ft. (carbody) The blue coiled steel gondolas from Ortner in December 1965-February 1966 were quite similar to the flat steel gons built at the same time (also from Ortner) in series 56850-56879. Like their sheet steel counterparts, these cars had three removable covers with running boards, as well as 10-inch end-of-car cushioning units; however, internally these cars contained two 50-foot cradle racks with six adjustable crossbars per rack. Photographed in Danville, IL, shortly after delivery, this car was marked for return when empty to L&N at Alabama City, AL. On page 77, there is a photo of L&N #56862 (series 56850-56879), also from Ortner in 12-65 to 2-66. Those cars were very similar to the above Ortner cars, but were designed to haul (flat) sheet steel. The covers used on these and many other L&N covered gondolas were designed by Republic Steel. Attached is a photo of #56866 and also one of #56956 (from an earlier group of sheet steel gons, which are covered on page 76), and a diagram sheet for series 56880-56899. You can access an L&N diagram book here to look at other covered gondola diagrams: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ln/ln-fcb.html Hope this is helpful. Steve Johnson

Coil-steel gondolas
Can someone please tell me about this L&N covered Gondola? It looks very similar to TA&G and Southern cars that were in the Republic Steel car pool. The cradles and covers for the TA&G and Southern cars were evidently a Republic design. Could this be a car that L&N had dedicated to Republic? I have searched in vain for a complete roster of an L&N car of this type.

TAG freight cars
2
https://www.lakestatesarchive.org/Ed-Wilkommen-BW-Collection/Freight-Cars/ This link is courtesy of Todd Horton. If you scroll through there are a few TAG freight cars but two in particular really jump out to me. Firstly 50 foot boxcar 7006. This is a one off and is unlike the other round roof 50 foot cars. I have three 35mm B&W negatives of this car which were shot at the same time with a roster and close-ups of either end. This is the only other roster of this car I have ever seen. There is also a shot of TAG 7007 which is a round roof car. You can compare the two. The other shot of note is covered gondola 4003. These external braced gondolas are at times seen in the background at Alton Park, but other than these three images in this link, I have never seen a detailed photographic study of this car. The longer 5000 series covered gondolas were shot a little more. The 5000s were cars TAG had to buy for the Republic car pool and are former Southern cars with guts and covers designed by Republic. Southern had the identical same car as their part in the car pool. I have seen partial pics of an blue L&N gondola with a similar hood. It was in front of a TAG caboose in the back of a TAG train. So it was - I assume - coming/going from Republic. I would really like to find more info on these gondolas. Warren

Chattanooga Traction Company
4
Guys, I wanted to give you all a heads up. There is a fantastic article on the Chattanooga Traction Company in the latest issue of Ties, the magazine of the Southern Railway Historical Association. Ties is a wonderful, glossy, well crafted publication. For those who are not SRHA members, you can get a copy at many fine hobby shops. Riverdale Station south of Atlanta and the big hobby shop on Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw should have copies. Chattanooga Traction was a C. E. James property and if Mr James had lived, he would have very likely connected both properties and he may have even electrified TAG. This is not the old green Ties. Totally revamped and the editor is a great guy doing great work. Can't say enough nice things. Warren

trackage rights
TAG trackage rights on the Belt Railway is a well established fact. But what is not commonly known is that the Belt Railway/AGS had about a mile or so of trackage rights on the TAG mainline. I am not really sure how or when this came about but I suspect that it dated back to the old Dicky clay pipe operation and that they were granted in the era when C. E. James still owned both properties. At any rate it was something Southern still had the right to exercise because in the early to mid 1960s, TAG published a list of potential industrial sights all along their entire mainline. It was noted in the entry for Dicky that any industry that located there could be switched by either railroad. I have found no evidence that Southern ever - appreciably - operated below the industrial complex in Alton Park. I understand that Southern spotted the occasional tank car at the fuel farm located near the state line. Many believe that these were company cars destined for the Southern's diesel shop at Citico. Even when the C&C was active on TAG the spur to the tank farm was overgrown and obviously disused. I have a few TAG era pics taken at the state line and these tracks leading to the tank farm were somewhat neglected but passable. There was an old Southern maintenance limit sign in place so the spur must have belonged to the tank farm. Does anyone have any info about Southern activity below Alton Park? I have always felt like the only things that ever really moved over this track south of the #4 milepost, regardless of actual ownership, was TAG trains. Warren

What parts of Chattanooga did the TAG serve

There is a section of visible rail just off Burnt Mill Road (close to St.Elmo) that has me wondering if the TAG had a spur in that area? Thanks.

O. B. Keister Jr.
I just reread my earlier post about TAG rail. I apologies for the spelling mistakes. My wife was calling me to supper and I pressed send before proof reading. I have made peace with the fact that there may be TAG mysteries I may never solve. One of the TAG folks that I seek to better understand is O. B. Keister Jr. My Keister was TAG president across much of the 1950s and would have been the last chief executive hired by the Coverdale estate before the railroad was sold to Garrison Siskin. There is a letter in my files from a Central of Georgia executive to Mr. Keister congratulating him on getting the job. The writer of the letter is friendly to Mr. Keister as if they were well acquainted. Sadly it doesn't tell where he came from prior to his time at TAG. His father O. B. Keister Sr. was a long-time Southern executive. Mr. Keister left TAG under less than ideal circumstances evidently. Although this is an established fact, I have never been able to find out why. I also had no idea where he landed post TAG. The University of Louisville has digitized the old Louisville & Nashville Railroad employee's magazines. I did a general TAG search there and discovered that he left TAG for a job with the L&N. At first he was a special representative for L&N in Chattanooga. He was soon made special assistant to the L&N president in Louisville. Not long thereafter he left the L&N to run a remote control locomotive company called "Transportation Services Inc." It is my understanding that the Siskins were no fan of the L&N. When the Southern arranged to buy TAG from Mr. Siskin, L&N petitioned for trackage rights. Mr. Siskin and Southern would have none of it. Could Siskin's heartburn with L&N come from Keister leaving TAG for the L&N? I would love to know Mr. Keister Jr.'s background prior to TAG and I would like to know what happened to him after the 1961 article about his remote control locomotive company. I have heard some say that a member of the Keister family was with the Tennessee Central. If anyone has any background on Mr. Keister Jr. I would sure appreciate it. I have actual copies or photocopies of most TAG annual reports. Someone showed me a copy of the one where Mr. Keister came on as president. I was unable to read or copy it and it had a short bio. I sure would love to find a copy again. If anyone knows anything about former TAG president O. B. Keister, I sure would love to hear it! Warren

TAG Rail
I came across this gem on eBay. It is mounted on what appears to be a drawer front. It has a finger pull routed into the back and there is an unstained area on the back where the drawer would have been. Stamped on the ball of the rail it says “TA&G 1891 56 Lbs.”. The TAG predecessor Chattanooga Southern was indeed laid with 56 pound rail. Most of the railroad was constructed from Gadsden north and a portion from Chattanooga southward to reach the planned city of Kensington. The golden spike was laid when north and south construction met in the center of Pigeon Mountain tunnel. These same light rails were down till the Coverdale syndicate bought TAG in 1929. At this point the 56 pound rail was replaced with 100 pound rail. Annual reports across the 1930s had entries detailed this progress. In addition to heavier rail they laid new creosoted ties with tie plates and heavy slag ballast. At first the heavy rail was laid on curves and on grades with choice 56 pound rail relaid on tangent trackage until the entire right of way became laid with the heavy rail. As progress was maid, the TAG began to buy heavier locomotives. Starting with the GM&N mikados which were soon sold to Canadian railroad Sydney & Louisburg and the larger New York Central mikados were purchased. The heavy rails were down and the larger mikados purchased just in time for the increased traffic of WW2. Warren
