Re: Minor Update and a Question

Unfortunatly it was around Christmans of 1999 that I was fooling around with
your program so it is difficult for me to remember the precise instances. I
ended up tabling (sic) my TS projects in hopes of getting a copy of
Tablemaster to compare the programs. It took me this long to get a copy,
however in the meantime I have been watching your site (excellent btw) and
following your newsgroup (where there have been some excellent tables and
ideas).
The specific thing I do remember was frustration with the way TS
produced output. This hard to explain, so bear with me. As you know, when
the program begins running a table, it starts at Start and "fills" the
tablecalls with specific results from the tables it calls. For example:

:Start
1,Origin: The caravan is coming from [Zakhara.Cities].<br> [Size]<br>

So the table calls Zahara.cities and fills that call with a specific
result, then it fills the Size call, and spits out the results. The Size
call calls the following subtable:

:Size
1-35,It is a small caravan carrying: [Cargo1] and [Cargo1]. The loads are
being transported by [Transport]. [Travelers]
36-70,It is a medium caravan carrying: [Cargo1], [Cargo1], and [Cargo1].
The loads are being transported by [Transport]. [Travelers]
71-98,It is a large caravan carrying: [Cargo1], [Cargo1], [Cargo1],
[Cargo1], [Cargo1], [Cargo1], [Cargo1], and [Cargo1]. The loads are being
transported by [Transport]. [Travelers]
99-100,It is a Royal caravan carrying: [Cargo1], [Cargo1], [Cargo1],
[Cargo1], [Cargo1], [Cargo1], [Cargo1], [Cargo1], [Cargo2], and [Cargo3].
The loads are being transported by [Transport]. [Travelers]

Now the specific call on this table fills all the calls made then
returns the results to the Start table. Say I had a variable under each of
100 Cargo1 table results that was the total value of the caravan. Each time
Cargo1 is called that variable should increment by the amount associated
with the specific result on the table. This did not seem to be happening
with any regularity, especially if the Traveler or Transport table calls
needed that variable to properly resolve.
So, the problem I was having was that as it "filled" in the specifics
there was no particular order in which it filled the table calls (in fact TS
might do them simultaneously), and if a variable was accessed several
subtables down in one call, then accessed in another call, the results of
the variable were never predictable.
Another problem I remember having was that variables were not clearing
between runs of a table. So I would run a table, get no predictable result,
then run it again and get the last table's variables as results, and so on.
Is this too confusing to follow? I hope I made myself clear, if not get
back to me.

Subject: RE: [TableSmith] Minor Update and a Question

I downloaded your Tablesmith program awhile ago, and while I was very
impressed with it, I found I was unable to control variables well enough
to
continue using it. This was mostly a problem when I made nested table
calls
using the same variable. Very often the affected variable would have
some
value from an early table call. Very odd behavior.
I'm not sure what you mean, exactly. If you mean that variables used in
the
same table (i.e.; table file) retained values that had previously been
assigned to them, that's how it's supposed to work. If you mean that a
variable
with the same name but in two different table files had the same value,
then
that's a bug that needs to be addressed.

I recently got my hands on a copy of the (now, I believe, defunct) Table
Master and found it to suit my needs in terms of control over variables.
However, the program is no longer supported in any manner that I can
discern
and doesn't have many of the features your own program does. Is there
any
chance you will be addressing these problems in your more recent
version?

First, when you say "problems", is there something else besides the
variable
issue you mention? In any case, if I can better understand the problem
you're
having, I can tell if it is a bug that will be fixed or whether that's the
way the program is supposed to work.

Subject: [TableSmith] Minor Update and a Question

Hey, we're up to 29 members on the list :)

Before I get to my query, the first "beta" of TS4 should
be available by Friday (I have this week off, so there's
no reason why I shouldn't get to it :) This adds a new
tag to group calls, so you can click on a portion of a
result and have just that portion re-rolled, keeping
the rest of the result intact. It will have limitations,
even in the final version, but it should be useful in
many situations.

My question is this: How useful would TS be to you if
it supported (in addition to its table scripting, of
course) more campaign management-type functionality? The
archival feature is one such feature (allowing you easy
access to previously-generated results, so, for instance,
the menu for the "Purple Unicorn Inn" remains the same
as it did the first time the PCs visited, or the inventory
of that spice merchant they encountered in the village of
Redhill...), and I'm considering others. Part of the idea
of TS has always been to alleviate some of the less-fun
but necessary GM tasks (coming up with names, descriptions
of mundane items, inn menus, etc.), and I can see expanding
that in the future. However, such features might not be
that useful unless you use a laptop/PC while GMing. I
welcome any thoughts and suggestions on this.

Also, I'm considering a future project of putting together
some table collections for sale, similar to what Wintertree
did with their "Fantasy Packs" for Tablemaster. These tables
would likely be bigger and more complex than those in the
Table Gallery, pushing TS to its limits and providing a
high degree of utility to their users. If I go ahead with that,
I'll be posting a notice about it to anyone who'd be interested
in contributing (and maybe making a couple of bucks :)

That's all for now...

Bruce,
I think you are on to something in both ideas. I have been working with your program for awhile and I have to tell you I'm quite amazed at the vast variety of stuff i can do. I even wrote done a table for christmas gifts. Took alot of work out of it for me. I like the idea of the archives I feel it would be a great asset to the program. Also I would love to contribute to the packages idea. Just give me a holler at tell me what to work on. Or when to start.

Hey,
First, I think TS is great (and been using it since TS1) but just recently
found the egroup. Anyway...
I'd be willing to help with designing tables for TS. But in addressing
the point you brought up about the management functionality, it might be
better to find out how many people here use those features or would be
interested in them before going ahead with it. Personally, I could see use of
it because I use it for things besides my table-top game and just have
everything prepared before hand. As an example, I run a PBEM empire game
where I use TS to generate what is in every hex, generating the NPC's and of
course, the monthly events. I really like many of the new features which make
those things easier.

And has anyone got the dungeon map generator to work it looks like a

The "readme" file included with the ZIP file explains how to configure
things to get the table to work - is it not clear enough? (Though you
do hae to make sure you use the right version; there is one for TS2
and a newer one for TS3).

To upload tables you have done, go to the website and go to the files
section(). There are a couple of
dirs that I have made, but anyone can feel free to make others if they need
to. From within the dir that you want to upload the file, you can either
upload or create a text file. I have been using the extra info line to give
credit to the author.

Re: TS4 GUI Idea

Bruce Gulke

Here's my idea for a GUI change to make tables easier to access... Instead
of the 2 drop down menus to pick a table, how about a tree structure
(explorer-like folders & files)? It could even auto-load the tree
structure
from a folder full of folders and table files.
Not a bad idea, and it would fit with the archive feature I'm planning on
adding. I don't know about auto-loading from a folder of folders, though;
I like the idea, but the ability to call other tables would be complicated
by doing that (so the "folders" in the tree would still have to read from
the .CAT file).

Sorry I've been quiet - busy couple of weeks (work, holidays, you
know how it goes :) Saw some good stuff coming through, which
reminded me that I need to get off my butt and get some new tables
put together.

Anyway, just a quick question: You folks interested in beta-testing
TableSmith 4.0? I figure since many (most?) of the people here seem
to be frequent users, I could get some good feedback. I figure I'd
put the compiled EXE in the Files section of the list, and you could
download it at your leisure.

TS4 isn't a reality yet - and won't be for awhile. But I'm in the
process of adding some new features, and I'm figuring on posting a
new EXE each time one is added, so people can start playing with
the program. When I'm satisfied that enough features have been
added to merit a version increase, and all the bugs have been
crushed <g>, then 4.0 will be officially released.

Just let me know. I'm almost ready with the first "beta" now. The
newest feature is an additional tag for table calls, which looks
like this:

[LN~Nordic Names]

When TS encounters a "LN~" tag, it means that the result that comes
up from the table/group call will be displayed as a hyperlink in the
TS results window. Click on it, and that part of the results will
be re-rolled, but the rest will remain the same. So, for instance,
if you've generated a random NPC and like everything but their name,
if the name call had the "LN~" tag, you can re-roll the name but
keep everything else the same.

The next new feature planned is an archiving feature, to easily save
and retrieve TableSmith results. No timetable on that one yet...

I am working on a NPC generator for 3e. it uses the standard races from the
rules, does not currently allow for multi-class, but does take racial
bonuses/penalties into account.

Any interest I could put up a copy though it is still a work in progress.

Does anyone even use this group anymore?
They better...I just joined 2 days ago.
Well, the group is fairly new, and only has 19 members so far. I
wouldn't expect a whole lot of traffic on a regular basis...

If we want to get a dialog going, perhaps we could talk about
some collaborative tables we could work on. I've got a few
ideas myself that I've been meaning to look at when I could
find the time:

- Poem and Song Names (I suppose one could to generate
the contents as well, though it might be difficult to
come up with something that made sense :)

- Contents of crates, barrels, sacks, etc. that one might
find in supply closets and storage rooms of a dungeon or
manor.

- Ship names

- Magic Item History Generator (I hate the idea of magic
items being just run-of-the-mill things; I prefer the
idea that anything permanent (like an enchanted sword,
as opposed to something like a scroll or potion) was made
for a reason, even if it's just a ring +2 or a sword +1;
Baldur's Gate I/II were good with that, having some
histories behind a lot of items that weren't necessarily
all that special mechanically)

- 3E Spellbook generator

- 3E NPC generator(s)

- "Random" dungeon generator; I say "random" because you could
put a great deal of intelligence in such a table, so while
it's "random", it still makes sense, moreso than a typical
random generator that puts a king's chamber next to an
underground storage room that houses three pteradons... This
is part of the idea behind the "DungeonSmith" program I
started working on, but I think the concept will have a better
chance of seeing completion if I put the efforts into doing
this in TableSmith than in a whole new program (and if new
features get added to TableSmith to support that - so much
the better).

- Jewelery generator (one ships with TS, but it's pretty weak;
it's needs to be greatly expanded)

Just some thoughts...
