Testset, HP8517A vs B version
Hello - For the classic HP8510 VNA system, there are a number of test sets. Can any one tell me (or point me to a doc) that details the RF 50 GHz Test set differences from HP8517A to HP8517B ? thanks!

VNA - RF coax between 8340A and 8510C - advice 3
Hi group, I need a new coax between the 8340A sweeper and the 8515A test set to replace my current cable+adapters. The 8340A sweeper has a 3.5mm male output on the front panel and goes to 26.5 GHz. The 8515A test set has a 3.5mm female input at the rear panel. My cable needs to be 3.5 mm female to male and long enough to go around the two instruments without "extruding" too much. My current coax from Adams Russel (male-male) is very good, but not long enough (96 cm), so I need a short semi-rigid+adapter. Still it works fine, but mechanically it's rather sensitive for accidental operator bumps. I could turn the generator around to solve this issue but, who likes that. Preferably 20dB return loss up to 26.5G. Yes, I can measure it once it's ready. I thought of making a semi-rigid cable from RG-402/U and with the right SMA connectors. Checking Mouser, this seems expensive with about 150 euro / connector from H&S or Rosenberger, so 300 euro + the cable + shipping and then I have to make it myself. Are there any better alternatives outside of China? Well, a quality manufacturer in China is OK, but my experience is that they are well hidden and hard to find. Thought's, suggestions, experience? Thanks, Bo

HP 85052 and 85033 open standard center contact 8
I recently saw pictures of open standards for HP 85033 and 85052 3.5 mm calibration kits with no center contact, for both the male and female standards. The open standards in my own 85052 calibration kit do have center contacts, though. Obviously, a center contact isn't necessary to achieve an open standard. However, does its presence have an effect on the performance of the standard? Why might one kit have open standards with center contacts, whereas another kit would not have them. Thanks, Matt

Anritsu calibration file format 2
Hi, Is there any documentation for the calibration files which are meant to come on disks with Anritsu cal kits? I'm interested in how to create such files for other standards that have been accurately measured on a calibrated VNA. The manual is very lacking - just suggests the COMPONENT UTILITIES -> INSTALL KIT INFO FROM DISC and suitable magic happens. At least the discs are in a DOS format and can be written using a USB floppy. There's a link on Dr. Kirby's site to Cal Kit Manager but unfortunately the link seems dead and maybe it only supports HP. Archive found a copy apparently at https://web.archive.org/web/20170424223326if_/http://vnahelp.com/ckman/setup.exe and ity does look like it is HP specific. Alan

Anritsu AutoCalData
Does anyone have any Anritsu AutoCalData files they would be willing to share? (Example attached.) I have figured out the serial controls for my 36585K and I have written a python tool that uses it, in combination with its AutoCalData file, to perform a calibration. I am in the process of putting this code into scikit-rf. However, I only have the one ACD file to test with, so I don't really know how well it generalizes. Besides, it would be nice to have a library of typical data in case anyone buys "as-is" and needs to diagnose their purchase. If anyone has ACD files for some of the related autocals (or, heck, even another 36585K) would you be willing to share a copy? 36581N 36581K 36582K 36584N 36584K 36585K 36585V PS If you have access to an Anritsu VNA, I think the file should live approximately here: C:\Anritsu\VNA\AutoCal\V123456.ACD Thanks!

Odd Problem with an 8515A test set 19
Hi all, Just wanted to throw this out there in case the symptoms ring a bell to anyone. My 8515A test set yesterday started showing a ~6-8 dB rolloff at the lowest frequencies, in through measurements on port 1. The accuracy of S11 is also affected in the same frequencies (from 45 MHz up to a few hundred MHz). It sort of calibrates out, but not entirely. It's like something is capacitively coupled, and it started suddenly. I am extremely careful about ESD when using my system, but with the almost absurd sustained dryness here in the Southwest, I suppose I could have zapped the samplers on that port despite precautions. I have ruled out the test port cables as well as dirty connectors. I understand that normally ESD events will totally kill the sampler affected, so I'm not convinced it's that. Just a possibility. The 8515A is used in my 8510C system with 8340B sweeper. Thanks! Sean

Maury Sliding Airlines 12
A stumbled across a 8035A and 8035H sliding airline this weekend. I think one is missing an adapter but I have not found a data sheet or any instructions on how to use them. Any guidance on where to learn more about them? I believe I have a use for them once I figure out more details thanks Dave VE7HR

PicoVNA 106 19
Hello My 8753D VNA seems to be having some start up problems which I have been trying to troubleshoot with the help of the good folks at the HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment groups. In the meantime I was looking to purchase the Pico VNA 106 so my projects do not come to a stand still. I see it as the lowest cost 6GHz VNA which is portable. Since I have some travels coming up, I wanted my next VNA purchase to be portable. I read Dr Kirkby's brief summary on the Pico VNA which really helps. But I also wanted to ask anyone in this group if they had any other thoughts about the Pico VNA apart from its software. I understand that the software is not as impressive in terms of its looks but wondering about its functionality. Its hardware specs seem quite competitive for its price (Dynamic range, trace noise). I'm mostly designing antennas in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz ISM range. Has anyone had any experience with the Pico VNA 106 model? https://www.picotech.com/vector-network-analyzer/picovna/picovna-series Are there any other portable VNAs out there that would be a better bang for the buck? Appreciate any feedback :) -Raghu

Looking for 8510C V7 firmware 8
I am trying to update 8510C program from v6 to v7. Found v7 floppy disk image at ko4bb site, and proper hardware for Dave Dunfield's Imagedisk. But v7 firmware disk image from ko4bb site is unusable. (http://www.ko4bb.com/getsimple/index.php?id=download&file=HP_Agilent/HP_8510_Network_Analyzer/HP_8510C_Operating_System_Discs_EPROM_V6_and_V7.zip) Last tracks of both v6 and v7 disks was corrupted by the testfdc utility before the images was made, so disks cant be read by 8510C or lifutils. Can somebody help me with 8510C v7 program?

NMD male connector repair 2
Hi folks, I got me a couple of pairs of HP test port cables in the mail today. Price was quite good. Unfortunately, one of them (85131-60012) has a problem. The male 3.5mm NMD on the reference plane end was loose, and when I examined it further, a pair of very fine washers/bushings that must have been made out of mylar? tumbled out, all crumpled and messed up. I put it back together and the connector's performance is very poor. I don't see any physical damage on the connector parts, but it seems those two pieces must be important. Is it possible to repair this? Sean

Application Notes HP/Agilent/Keysight 8
Hello All, This may not be the best group to do this, but I will start here. I am winding down my career and looking to downsize my library. I have two boxes (the banker's storage box size) of Hp/Agilent/Keysight Application notes that I am looking to donate someplace or someone. The app notes go all the way back to the 1960's (I picked these up from someone throwing them out when I worked at Agilent in the early 2000's). I tried donating them to a local college (Massachusetts/New Hampshire area) about 8 years ago but they were not interested. All topics are covered. Sorry I do not have a list. I also have another two boxes (larger than the banker's storage box) that deal with phase noise and the phase noise measurement system (E5500). If you are local to the Massachusetts/New Hampshire area I am willing to meet up within reason. Otherwise, we can try to work something out. I hope someone would like them, I would hate to throw them out. Reply back or send a email to mikejvir at gmail dot com with the subject line AppNotes Thanks for your time Sincerely Michael J. Understanding filter measurements 10
Hi folks, This is a question about understanding what my VNA is telling me and likely also gaps in my understanding of filters. In the course of learning how to use my new 8510C, I have been working with a ~10.66 GHz bandpass filter I had in my stash of RF parts. If we just consider S11 and S21 log magnitude (see the plots attached below), what I see makes sense. S11 shows about 20 dB return loss in the passpand, and S21 corresponds to a nice low insertion loss in the passband. However, if I look at SWR, the S21 measurement doesn't make sense to me (and this is where my gap in understanding likely lays). Why is the S21 SWR high, while the S11 SWR is low? The copy of the 8510C user and programming manual I have appears to have some misprints where it describes how the instrument computes SWR, but I was able to verify I get the same results as shown by the instrument by hand computation. 8510C questions 16
Hi folks, After much waiting, I finally acquired my 8510C! My Xmas gift to myself, if you will. :o) It’s basically turnkey, all cables accounted for. Seller threw in some megaphase test cables. 8515A test set and 8340B sweeper. I already had a 85052A cal kit on hand. And yes, I already know about connector care for precision connectors, especially the 902D broadband load. I was wondering a couple of things: 1) is there a well documented process for backing up the “boot key” that can apparently go bad? 2) related to that, the machine already has option 010 installed. I would eventually like to be able to enable the 8530A microwave receiver personality. Is the software for that readily available in the community? As a hobbyist, getting the boost tools for my buck is important. 3) coming from the nanoVNA and and never having used the shielded opens, what exactly is the benefit i of the little plastic center conductors that insert into the shielded load? I’ve found that my open when I don’t have the shielded open installed looks not very open! I did load the cal coefficients for my cal kit from the floppy disk the guy I got it from made (it has a tape in it for the older machines). There were two files. Maybe I’m using the wrong one? Thanks! And Merry Christmas, all! Sean

Locked List etiquette. Was 85027C 5
Well, I am the owner, moderator, and benevolent dictator, so here goes… Pete, you know your threats to destroy items others consider to be valuable annoy the living crap out of quite a few people on this mailing list and others. It has been discussed in a number of venues any number of times. On the other hand, you are sometimes a valuable contributor to the VNA and HP communities, often have great gear to offer to fellow members of the test equipment and ham radio communities. Many have benefitted from your sources, collection and knowledge. As such, I ask you, Pete, to refrain from posting in the vein of equipment destruction, etc as a consideration to your fellow contributors. Similarly, I ask the rest of the participants on this list to also refrain from rising to the bait and going down this pointless rathole. Starting now, anyone who brings this up risks, at first step, complete moderator approval of all postings, and, as a second step, removal from the list. As list moderator and benevolent dictator, I pretty much let everything go by unless it really threatens the signal to noise ratio, which, for a group such as this, is generally as it should be, that being very high I do not undertake this action lightly or without some careful consideration. I personally abhor censorship, but I also recognize the need to keep discussions focused. As such, I ask you all to ask yourself before emailing or posting here the following question: ‘Is this posting/email a positive contribution or question relative to the discussion at hand?’ If it is, please contribute and, by all means, ask questions and offer up good tidbits for sale on a personal basis. If responding to an offer of something for sale, please direct your responses to the originator of the offer. We don’t all need to see the deal go down. Many thanks, Bob
