Softrock power supply 2
Guys, I probably should have asked this years ago, but what power supply do you use for your Softrock? I have both "wall wart" switching units and transformer type. Right now, I've been using a heavily filtered 12V switching "wall wart", but I'd like to switch that out to a transformer type. Problem is that most of the transformer wall warts in my arsenal put out way more than their marked voltage. Is there something on the market maybe that's cheap and would do the job? The unit doesn't use much current so no sense in overkill supplies like my ham transceiver uses. Thanks!

lightning protection suggestions? 2
A few weeks ago, I finally put up a random wire for the Softrock. It has made a big difference in reception over both a simple passive indoor loop and an attic dipole. It is made with thin magnet wire, #26 or so. However, with warming temps here now comes the possibility of thunderstorms. I basically have the end of the wire coming up to a BNC and soldered to the center. To take off strain, the wire is first taped to the RG58 coax. The BNC has the center random wire and the ground goes to the closest ground rod with a thick copper wire. I'm wondering how to protect this simple system against static/ lightning? Thanks!

have not been able to get the LF Ensemble RX II working correctly in HDSDR 5
Jon, Did you set the LF version with CFGSR? Setting the "Init" tab to LF https://sites.google.com/site/g4zfqradio/configuring-a-softrock-sdr/extio-or-cfgsr-some-notes should work. Ensure that this sets the two top LO multipliers to 16 on the "LO" tab. Not it is possiblr to run them simultaneously if you want. Alter the ATTiny serial number. No, the driver is the same. 73 Alan G4ZFQ

Softrock on Raspberry Pi 2
I apologize to all. On a raspberry pi in a shell type "lsusb" and you should see this when the softrock is plugged in: "Van Ooijen Technische Informatica shared ID for use with libusb" This is what I see on my Raspberry Pi 4b. This will be an interesting path for me to explore.

W6SFM Bug Roundup Event is coming soon! Save the Date
Announcing W6SFM's BUG ROUNDUP The Samuel F. Morse Amateur Radio Club, a Sacramento, California based CW enthusiast club wanted a special time to bring bug operators together on the air. In the same spirit as ARRL's Straight Key Night, participants are encouraged to make simple, conversational, “chewing-the-fat” QSOs using their bug type key. This is an opportunity to exercise, share and exhibit your personalized fist. This is NOT a contest. However, there is a very easy and quick registration form found at https://w6sfm.com/bug-roundup/. Once you've optionally registered for the event simply Call "CQ BR" so folks know you are a Bug Roundup Participant. So lets grab that bug, clean those contacts, and let’er fly! We want to hear that “Banana Boat / Lake Erie Swing" or that commercial KPH/WCC quality fist. Reserve the date! The event begins on Friday May 21st (local) ( May 22nd 00:00 UTC) and concludes Sunday May 23rd (00:00 UTC) That's 5:00 PM Friday evening until Sunday 5 PM Pacific Time (LOCAL) For more information, to register your station, and to help assist in spotting, potentially increasing QSOs, an On-line chat window link can be found near the bottom of Bug Roundup home page located at https://w6sfm.com/bug-roundup/ We hope to hear you all on the air! 73, W6SFM

FM Modulation Index = 1.67
Hello everybody, I noticed that the default value for FM modulation index in Quisk is set equal to 1.67. I use Quisk with a Softrock RXTX. Is it a correct value? I assume that 1.67 comes from 5/3, where 5 is the frequency deviation of the transmitter and 3Khz is desired modulated bandwidth. Am I correct? Does the Softrock really has a 5Khz deviation? Would it be better to change the 1.67 value (I was thinking to set it equal to 1) to have a clearer modulation? As for my understanding lowering the modulation index setting to 1 would increase the modulated bandwidth up to 5Khz (instead of 3Khz). 73 Franco iz2oos

SoftRock RXTX Ensemble XCVR general questions 11
Greetings, I'm new to this SDR "thing" but would like to try it cheaply and safely. I have some general questions about the RXTX Ensemble: 1) I've seen it referred to as being 2 watts but the web site says 1 watt. Please clarify. 2) None of my computers have a stereo I/O. I guess I could purchase a card for my main computer but would really prefer to use one of my laptops. I'm told that there is a box that converts a USB port to stereo I/O. Does anyone have experience with this method? 3) Is the RXTX Ensemble capable of using the weak signal protocols such as from WSJT? 40 What band grouping do you recommend? I'm thinking 40-30-20 given the sunspot cycle and the size of my back yard - simple vertical with lots of radials. Thanks for your help, Dan K8XW

introductions 2
Greetings, My name is Dan - K8XW - and I'm new to the group. I've been licensed for over 60 years but have never tried an SDR type of radio. I read in the Feb. issue of CQ where AC2YD showed his experience with a Softrock Xcvr. So, I'm interested in a similar, if not identical, setup. But to do so, I expect to need some help. That's basically why I joined this group. 73s. Dan K8XW

RD16HHF1 source? 10
I'm seeing nothing but ebay sources for this transistor and wonder if anybody can vouch for a vendor that isn't selling fake parts? It seems much more stable than an IRF510 at 5-10 Watts. 73, Brent, AB1LF

HSDR Output 17
I installed HSDR last month on my desktop PC and it works fine with my softrock. I am trying to reproduce my setup in my shop with another pc, and I am having the same issue with 2 different PC, one with W10 64 bit an Intel NUC and one with an older XP laptop. On both units, the output from the USB sound device to the Softrock is dead. Everything else works properly. I can swap the speaker device and the Softrock I/Q output and the speaker still works, but not the I/Q output. Therefore, all the hardware is OK, and there is a software issue. Does anyone have an idea of what could be amiss? Thanks, Howard

W9SZ, Zack. Microwave Contest Winner 2020
Hello All, Just to let group know, Zack W9SZ had an exceptional showing in the SE VHF 2020 Fall Sprint Contest as a microwave rover. Making amateur microwave equipment work on a bench or in the shack is one thing. Traveling all over portable for rover operation is another level of making things work! Because of this Zack gets to keep the Orange Klystron Award (see photo) in his shack until next year's winner gets it. If Zack wins Fall 2021 then it will stay with him another year. 73 Bruce Randall NT4RT, VHF Fall Sprint contest chairman.

antenna question 7
The softrock has been up and running for over a week now thanks in large part to group tips. However, the antenna I'm using, a 30' long attic dipole isn't doing so well and looking for upgrade suggestions. To save costs, I'd like to homebrew a better antenna. Years ago, when I did my Jupiter listening, I had a dual dipole set up at 20 Mhz outdoors with a coax preamp. The antenna did pretty well, not just for Jupiter but most of the HF. Unfortunately, budget and space restrictions mean I can't erect something like this again at the current time. I still have the preamp, based on a Mar6 or MRF901. I no longer have the length of coax I used at the time, nor the wire for the dipole. I do have a very old quantity of RG-8 that can't really be used for anything anymore. A possible thought was using the RG-8 for a one meter loop antenna with the preamp directly at the base. Only issue is attic heat. In the summer, it would likely damage the preamp. Another thought is just using the loop indoors close to where I have the softrock. Anyway, your thoughts would be welcome here.

free HDSDR CW decoder? 4
Just wondering if there was any way to freely decode CW with HDSDR and Softrock RX Ens II? If something other than HDSDR can do it and also free, please share. Thank you.

cannot seem to get Ensemble RX II working 13
Hello again! Well, after having no luck getting the Ensemble RX II working in Ubuntu, I have tried to do so in an older desktop I had with Win 7. However, I am experiencing the same issues I had when trying in Ubuntu, so I am thinking there is something I'm missing. If anyone knows of a free screen video capture for Win 7, please let me know and I'll try and show you settings/ etc. For now, I have four questions: 1) I am getting "unknown device" error if anything is plugged into USB other than the Softrock. If I boot up with only the Softrock connected, it is recognized and then I can plug in my USB keyboard and mouse, but I can't have anything connected other than the Softrock at boot, otherwise I get the error. What is the workaround? For now, I can use the two USB front ports to plug in keyboard/ mouse after boot up but not very convenient. Win 7 on an HP a1520n. 2) I used the process described at http://fivedash.com/resource/softwareSetup.pdf to try setting up the unit. However, since the desktop cannot be connected to the internet, I of course got an error when trying to install the ConFiG SoftRock tool on page 7. So I installed the CFGSR from here: http://www.wb5rvz.org/common/softwareinstallation (ver 2.3), but no idea if that is the correct version. 3) This may seem silly, but I own both the LF and HF Ensemble receivers. They both look identical. How do I tell the difference externally or is there something in software that differentiates one from the other? 4) When I was trying to get these running in Ubuntu, I may have manipulated some of the Ensemble settings. How do I reset the unit to factory default? Thanks in advance. Next step will be sharing screen video if above doesn't help.

Softrock Files Archive 2009 2
Earlier messages similar to this are probably still buried in the messages section but I thought it might be worth another repeat, with apologies in advance if I got that wrong:-) In January 2009, when the Yahoo groups file section was nearly full and there was discussion of the need for some heavy pruning of older files, I created an archive of all the then current folders and files to ensure they weren't lost. There will no doubt be duplication in that archive of some files still held by the group but there may be stuff that is no longer available elsewhere. Since 2016 this 90 MB zip file has been available for anyone to download from my account on Mediafire and I've checked today that it still downloads and opens ok....... http://www.mediafire.com/file/1c3t8ad7yo4gee9/Softrock210109.zip Nigel GM8PZR
