Minimum connections to Ensemble RX/TX to test basic TX output?
26 May 2020 Most of my test gear and stuff is at work and right now I am locked down at home. It would make testing my all of a sudden no TX Ensemble simpler the fewer external connections to it as possible. I don't believe I have ever read of a minimum connection arrangement to test basic output functionality, so I am here to ask if I need to connect every external cable to do this please? I am stuck with an ancient mono input laptop and an external stereo USB Sound Blaster affair. I can easily borrow a 150 MHz USB scope and have meters and probes here. I have a TS-590 on a decent external antenna here. It was TX'ing on SSB the other day, next time I hooked it up I could not get it to give any SSB output on a nearby HF receiver at all. RX was fine, thanks. -- Best regards, Chris mailto:chris@...

Two Softrock Ensemble II receivers and accessories for sale 4
Hello All, Because of recent equipment additions and changes I'm doing some major overhauls of my shack and have the following equipment for sale (USA only for shipping reasons). It all works well and is being offered as a package. . . 1. Softrock Ensemble II LF receiver, built it myself from a kit. I've been "doing" radio/electronics since around 1954 or so and feel I do professional level work. It has the following additional features added. A. Select between TWO antenna inputs, one passive and one active (such as a mini-whip). B. In addition to the usual factory filters in the front end I have added a 530KHz Low-Pass filter which may be switched in/out, especially useful if you have some strong MW stations nearby. C. Installed in a nice plastic project cabinet, all functions labeled with a label-maker. You may see pictures taken before I labeled controls here. https://s38.photobucket.com/user/ko6bb/library/My%20Softrock%20SDR%20Project%20Pictures?sort=4&page=1 2. Softrock Ensemble II HF receiver. This one was bought pre-wired (by Tony Parks) but has never been installed in a case or even fired up. I will include a small new plastic box that you can put it in. NOTE: This one is untested as I never got around to putting it in service. Go to this page for more information on Softrock equipment. http://fivedash.com/ 3. "Sewell Direct Soundbox Pro External USB Sound Card". 24 bit 192kHz soundcard allows the Softrock to display 192KHz of bandwidth. I bought two of these soundcards from Amazon for $68 each and will include ONE with the package. You can see it here. https://www.amazon.com/Sewell-Direct-Soundbox-External-SW-30415/dp/B00K1OOGRI/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 4. Small box containing two Triad quality audio coupling transformers and two 1/8" stereo jacks. This can be placed between the Receiver and sound card to eliminate the 'spike' that often shows up in the center of a Softrock Frequency display. Don't recall the price, but they were fairly expensive. 5. Two audio Cables to connect the transformer box between receiver and the sound card. 6. USB cables to plug the Softrock and soundcard into your computer. This is an "Almost-complete" SDR system covering VLF through HF bands. All you should need to add is a suitable computer, antenna and 12 Volts DC for the two Softrocks. ASKING $130 Cashier's Check or Postal Money order which INCLUDES shipping of my choice to the US Lower 48 states. OR if you want TWO soundcards, one for each receiver, for $150 I'll also include the 2nd one that is still in the box (cost me $68). NOTE: I WILL HAVE A FEW ADDITIONAL ITEMS THAT I'LL BE SELLING IN THE NEAR FUTURE. 160-10 Meter RXTX Modification 2
Hi, Reading through the Files section, I chanced upon this: https://qsl.net/v/ve7vv//Files/160-10%20Meter%20RXTX%20Modification.pdf I've started considering the changes in earnest and reading through the copious notes (Thanks VE7VV). I came across the changes to T5 (Page 3 - 4a), where its says, T5 4T:2T (This is the same as used in the Ensemble II and III units) Does this refer to T3 (T03) in the Ensemble RX II - 23.04uH: 4T/2T(bi)T #30(9(4/2x2.5)in) on BN43-2402 Many thanks for your help. Remind me please about soundcard needs for the Ensemble RXTX 6
20 May 2020 Not used my Ensemble RXTX for years and dusting it off I realized I cannot remember if I need TWO stereo soundcards, or if I can use my mono input on board laptop sound alongside an external stereo USB SBX Soundblaster? Thanks. Last night I was getting mirrored images either side of the center frequency, maybe I had the inputs and outputs to and from the soundcards configured wrongly, or maybe it plain won't work with this combination? -- Best regards, Chris mailto:chris@...

Ensemble RX/TX [5/24/10] 2
Hi, Hope this email finds you well. I am trying to revive the Ensemble board [version 5/24/10] and check if the I/Q signals are being output correctly. My current laptop does not have a stereo in, but I do I have a 2 Channel DSO. The current draw is 18mA on RX. What is the best way to test if each stage is working correctly? Are any examples of signals analysis available? Many thanks for your help. Best 73, Ravi/M0RVI -- I'm here to add more value to the world than I'm using up.

Help 3
I need to implement TDMA and FDMA based slot assignment protocol. I have written the code for TDMA slot assignment but confused about the FDMA part. Will someone please guide me in writing the code for FDMA for a simple scenario. In which two nodes are using full duplex radio and working on two different frequencies. If node1 needs to communicate to node 2 then node 2 must shift its frequency to node 1 frequency. I have not worked with the radios yet. In TDMA part i am using senddirect for sending messages. There is mulitradio exmaple in inet but it uses two or more than two radios for single module. I want to use one full duplex radio for single module. How should i begin working with the FDMA part? Linux software for SoftRock RxTx 6.2 9
Some time ago, I assembled the Softrock RxTx 6.2 for 40 meters. After a very long hiatus, I am returning to the Softrock and wish to get it up and running. While there is (or at least was) a fair amount of Windows-based software, I would prefer to use Linux to control the device. I would appreciate any suggestions for locating reasonably current packages, etc. that will work with the Softrock.

W6SFM Bug Roundup Event is coming soon! Save the Date
Announcing W6SFM's BUG ROUNDUP The Samuel F. Morse Amateur Radio Club, a Sacramento, California based CW enthusiast club wanted a special time to bring bug operators together on the air. In the same spirit as ARRL's Straight Key Night, participants are encouraged to make simple, conversational, “chewing-the-fat” QSOs using their bug type key. This is an opportunity to exercise, share and exhibit your personalized fist. This is NOT a contest. However, there is a very easy and quick registration form found at https://w6sfm.com/bug-roundup/. Once you've optionally registered for the event simply Call "CQ BR" so folks know you are a Bug Roundup Participant. So lets grab that bug, clean those contacts, and let’er fly! We want to hear that “Banana Boat / Lake Erie Swing" or that commercial KPH/WCC quality fist. Reserve the date! The event begins on Saturday May 16th (00:00 UTC) and concludes Monday May 18th (00:00 UTC) That's 5:00 PM Friday evening until Sunday 5 PM Pacific Time (LOCAL) For more information, to register your station, and to help assist in spotting, potentially increasing QSOs, an On-line chat window link can be found near the bottom of Bug Roundup home page located at https://w6sfm.com/bug-roundup/ We hope to hear you all on the air! 73, W6SFM

Softrock RXTX - Oscillating Current after finishing RX_OpAmp 5
Hello All, Given the current state of things I've finally gotten around to digging into finishing this project. I resumed at Dividers stage and have been finding the HamNation episodes quite helpful, mostly in learning how to wind the inductors and transformers. I recently finished the RX_OpAmp stage and was looking forward to using he receive portion of this project a bit. While going through the test things were looking quite good. I went to another room to grab a resistor for the bridged portion of testing and came back to my current oscillating and climbing. To be a bit more specific, I'll turn on the power (13V) and the current draw will start around 13.5 mA. It'll then slowly start growing and oscillating - 13.5, 14, 13.7, 14.5, 14, 15,14.8,16, 15.5, 17... etc and continues to climb - usually capping out around 18-20mA. I've noticed, when I have the usb plugged in it climbs a lot faster and a light higher, to the point I turn off the power for concern the magic blue smoke will be released. I'm wondering if anyone has a hunch or suggestions for troubleshooting this issue? I've got several multimeters, a frequency counter, and frequency generator. Thank you for your time and have a great day! Karl KK4NBG

Softrock RXTX Troubleshooting Help Needed 6
Hello, I am trying to complete the final testing of my Softrock RXTX kit. I am testing on the Driver/PA stage and a get a 116mA current draw on RX without activating the PTT. This current draw occurs with both the USB power and the 12v power When just using the 12v power (no USB power), I get a current draw of 18mA. The instructions I have been following called for the RX current draw to be less than 25 mA with both USB and 12v power when the PTT is not activated. Up until this point, all voltage and current checks have been fine in all previous stages as shown on the http://www.wb5rvz.org/ensemble_rxtx website. I have checked all the solder joints and have even re-round and resoldered T4. Any suggestions on what I can try next? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Tate N3BXZ

Ensemble II installation
I got it working, but it took 5 hours of poking around the computer. The problem involved finding the two .dll files and the driver and putting them all where the computer could find them. It was tedious, but the unit works with one exception. There is a tick .... tick .... tick at almost one per second. It wasn't there when I first got the Ensemble II fired up, but it is now. If anyone has run into this sort of thing, I would appreciate any advice. 73, Dave, K4TO

Using Softrock ensemble II RTXT as all band FT-8 transceiver 56 #ft8
After getting my licence I want to take my first steps in transmitting so I bought an Ensemble II transceiver kit for 40/30/20 meters Building is a ongoing but I'm wandering it this kit can be used in a more generic way. Its basically an I/Q modulator/demodulator with a simple power amplifier. Would it be possible to eliminate the band specific parts (including the BS170 power amplifier) and use the kit as an all band FT-8 transceiver with appropriate external band filters? I'm able to design and measure filters with Elsie and a home build VNA and I have a home build SA to evaluate spectral purity and inter modulation of the transmitter output. Output level will be a couple of milliwatt but for first experiments that should be enough. Later I can add an external 10 Watt al band amp if needed Would this work???

Info on Ensemble 40-20 to 15-10? 3
I purchased an Ensemble kit for 40-30-20 some time ago, but never put it together due to time crunch plus breakdowns that were priority. Now I've got a real use if I could put it together for 15-12-10, for use when the sunspot cycle picks up, plus I have a transverter that uses 28 (to 432) and could also then come up with something for 10-6. Right now I've got the transverter on my ancient monster TS-520, but it would be nice to have a dedicated radio for use with the transverter. Is there any information that quickly lists the differences between the two kits (I suspect maybe just a few caps and toroids)? That way I could assemble it and put it online - without having the hassle of trying to tune down the 520 for use with the transverter and then up a bit for other uses. Thanks! Bob N4FBZ
