[SR-40] MSdotNet S/W to Share
SR-40 folks,
Through the generosity of one of our list members, PowerSDR-v1.4.4 for the
SR-40 is now running on my Dell 8100 laptop and XP Pro OS. That after
installing MSdotNET Framework and SP1. Now to build the kit and see if it
all really works...[g]
If anyone who lives in the sticks like me or elsewhere with only a slow
dial-up, or other download problems, would like a copy let me know and I'll
send a CD in exchange for a blank CD-R and postage. (I'm retired on a
limited income.)
The CD will include MS .NET Framework and it's SP1. If downloading the
PowerSDR-v1.4.4 software and Bill, KD5TFD's SR-40 overlay is also a
problem, that can be included too.

[Flexradio] SDR1000 IQ Signal Recordings
I came to a similar conclusion last night, the radio was acting like
it's RF gain was way down. I discovered that by turning up the AGC
gain I could hear the crud between signals. At first I turned it way
up, but after a while it got old hearing all that noise, so I started
turning it down a little bit at a time, until I arrived at a value
that would let me hear weak signals yet barely hear the constant crud.
That is a pretty nice feature, I have a FT-817 and one of it's
failings is that the AGC cranks up the gain so high when there is no
signal, that it drives crazy with all the noise. I resort to manual
gain and you get a much nicer result.
I've been playing with the settings on the software and cranked up
the DSP buffer to 2048, that makes the filters really much sharper,
yet it doesn't seem to eat too much more CPU time. The two displays
are the ones that eat up the CPU.
One more question; the ASIO4all has setting for using DMA for the
transfers, I have not seen anything on it, it seems to cut down CPU
usage by a few %, Is this recommended, using DMA on the sound card transfers?
Thanks

MSdotNet S/W to Share [Redistributable]
Folks,
According the to MS dotNet Website, Framework v1.1 is Redistributable.
I verified this with my favorite MS licensed MIS person yesterday. It's
permitted as a convenience so users of licensed developer software don't
have to go to the website for a lengthy download.
This statement appears to be incorrect in this instance...

Sound cards
Hello All
This is probably basic to most of you but how do I find the sampling
rate of my sound card? I have a 1.3g cpu motherboard with the sound
card part of the motherboard. W98SE. I know the sound works but that
is about it. I do not like messing with what works.
Below is from the documentation and I have the mobo cd. The mobo is a
M810LMR.
AC97 Codec
Compliant PC97 2.1 specification
Supports 18-bit ADC (Analog Digital Converter) and DAC (Digital Analog
Converter) as well as 18-bit stereo full-duplex codec
I suppose I could feed in an audio signal but there must be a way
using the software to figure this out. After all, it is a computer.
Thank you.

SoftRock40 - Update on 30M crystal availability
4
Hello everyone,
I have had a very strong response to my offer for crystals to put
the SR40 on 30M. As of this writing, Sept 25 @ 10:00pm EDT nearly 80
crystals have been spoken for. I have packaged and will be shipping out 34
orders containing a total of 64 crystals. If you paid via PayPal, and
received a confirmation email from me, your crystals are going in tomorrow's
mail. I am holding crystals for others who are sending checks.
At this point, I can accept orders for about 15 more crystals.
PLEASE email me to check availability BEFORE sending any payment. I am
working on obtaining more crystals, and will post another message when I am
certain of my ability to restock.
Thanks once again to all who have expressed interest.

Photos uploaded to N1RX folder
Hello everyone.
I have uploaded two pictures to show the changes needed to put the
SoftRock on 30 meters. Those of you who are waiting on 40.500 Mhz
crystals from me are going to need two 33pF caps to replace C6 and C7
in the local oscillator. Most of the crystals that have been ordered
shipped today. Let me know if there are any questions.

Power Modification Photos Uploaded
I have just added two photos showing how to modify the power input of
the SoftRock. This is one way to provide power if you do not want to
run it from the USB port. Some have reported a lower noise-floor when
isolating the radio's power from the PC. Q1 is replaced by 78L05 5
volt regulator. R1 is not installed. In it's place, a higher voltage
version of C2 is used. I recommend something with a rating higher than
the 16volt cap supplied for C2 in the kit. I used a 35volt tantalum
cap. The original position for C2 is filled by a jumper wire. This
makes a convenient ground poit for testing.
In the close-up photo, you can also see C8, the coupling cap from the
local oscillator, has been mounted in a 2 pin header. This makes it
easy to disconnect the onboard oscillator. This way, you can use an
external clock source, like a DDS, in place of the crystal oscillator.

SR-40
Today I went shopping for a fine pair of tweezers and a
light/magnifier glass for building the SR-40. I looked here, I look
there, nothing worth spending $1 on, until someone sent me to Hobby
Lobby, I struck out there too.
As I exited the building across the parking lot I saw something that
I had not seen before , it made me take a good hard look to make sure
I wasn't dreaming it up. A Harbor Freight Store, I was not aware
there was one. Apparently they were recently added to a manufacturers
mall just outside of town (5 minutes drive).
I immediately checked them out and lo an behold really fine tweezers
for a reasonable price, and a nice looking lamp, and ... $90 later I
left the place before I could go broke. They also informed me they
would match any Internet price or catalog price. I took their sale
catalog for this weekend's sidewalk sale. Huh, three iron skillets
for $9.99, I need some of those too.
It keeps getting better, when I got home, there was my order from the
AMQRP club , after supper it's time to mount the light on my
worktable and see if I can work with those darned tiny parts.
Some days are good, some days are so so, today was a good day.

[soft_radio] SR-40
I put the lamp from Harbor Freight on my workbench, and I highly
recommend it, I can now see the board and the parts clear as could
be. The lamp is a circular florescent and the illumination is nice
and even with no glare or shadows. If you are 40+ or have vision
problems I highly recommend it, I had another lamp from Lowes with an
incandescent light bulb and the difference between them is
incredible. It cost $27 and it's worth every penny.
Disclaimer: I own the lamp company and want you to buy it so I can
retire as a rich pig in Tahiti, and if you believe that, I also sell
bridges and have a real good deal on one in Manhattan .

SoftRock-40 - cat steals coil
I wound the coil this morning, left it on my desk, and then went out,
meaning to solder it in place when I got back. When I returned it had
disappeared. Babbage, my Burmese cat, had obviously come across it and, as
he usually does with small objects he hasn't seen before, had been playing
with it and left it somewhere. I spent several minutes searching for it (the
carpets are red, which doesn't help) and had just resigned myself to winding
another one (I've got a good selection of cores) when I thought I'd check
the stairs and found it about half-way down. 8-)

[QRP-L] SoftRock-40 - cat steals coil
Have you ever read the best seller:

Just kidding. I love my own cat but (thank goodness) she hates my work

We are in the process of backing up and punting instead. I've been
advised to move the crystal frequency of SR-40 by 12KHz on the low or
on the high side, to get away from some of the noise in the center of
the receivers band.
Not an easy job due to lack of crystals at those high frequencies, I
found one 17 KHz low, too low for my taste. I'll be checking for
something closer later when I get a break.
Any guesses as to how low could I pull a 35.328 MHz crystal? 48KHz lower?
I kept the names of the interested parties, and will keep you posted.

For people interested in using the SR-40 for dedicated purpose, I was
nosing through the Mouser Catalog on line and they have for
reasonable prices both crystals and little 3.3Volt oscillator modules
to move the SoftRock 40 to the following useful frequencies;
3.579 MHz 80 Meter watering hole, changes to filter needed (14.318 MHz)
4.912 MHz Popular IF frequency, changes to filter needed (19.660 MHz)
8.830 MHz Kenwood IF frequency, no changes to the filter (35.328MHz)
9.0 MHz Ten-Tec and popular IF frequency, no changes to the filter (36 MHz)
Some of those frequencies come out a KHz or thereabout off the
correct frequency, but since the SR-40 can tune +- 24 KHz it comes
out in the wash.
The crystals are anywhere from $.42 to about $2, and the complete
modules are from $1.92 to $3
I'm going to get me some crystals and Osc. modules for 8.830, and
crystals for the rest, to play around with.
Nothing like a SR-40 with a TS-940sat for a front end, talk about
opposite ends of the spectrum, it will be my SR-40 that can go
everywhere with one heck of a front end, or my TS-940sat with
Panoramic display.
If one or two guys/gals are interested in getting a OSC module for
8.830MHz the Kenwood panoramic output on the back of the radio, let
me know before tomorrow night and I'll include an extra module for
you for cost + shipping. I'll send a last call before sending out the
purchase order.

carrirer oscillator

Hi All,
Question. Does Power SDR software provide a "Variable Beat or Carrier
Oscillator"? Perhaps 2 ?
What is the freq range of that oscillator ( up to 48 or 96 kHz ? )

Computer and Sound Card

The other part of the equation is the computer and sound card. What is
recommended ? I know that previous SDR discussion revolved around some
of the better Creative Labs sound cards and at one time the Turtle
Beach SantaCruz sound card was recommended as a good low noise card for
SDR. Lately all I see recommended as the best card is the Delta 4?
sound card. Since this SR40 really does not have the performance of the
much better and more sophisticated SDR-1000, is the sound card
selection all that important ? I did pick up a SantaCruz card at Fry's
for $40 which is all I want to spend.

Not working: HELP
15
I finished the SoftRock last night and I plugged it in to one of my
USB hubs...no green light from the LED. I put it back on the bench and
verified everything and all looked ok. After messing with it for a while and
still not getting a green LED from my USB hub, I decided to plug it in to
the USB on the back of the computer...GREEN LIGHT. Wondering why the USB hub
doesn't put out 5 volts, but will worry about that later. I thought that the
5 volts daisy chained from device to device.
So, it lit up, but I am not receiving anything. The latest binary
was acting really weird on my computer, so I reinstalled PowerSDR and then
unzipped the binary's from August in to the SDR install. It appears to work
ok now, I think. I have no way of verifying that. All I get is a little
background noise (I got this before though) and a solid S-9 carrier at
7.056, but this is ALL I ever got from the software whenever I would start
it up with NO hardware. So, I hope this is making sense, the SR-40 is either
not working properly, or the software is not working.
I can play the canned .wav files and that works, but nothing from
the SR-40. Made sure my LINE-IN port on the soundcard was selected, and
checked that the volume was up sufficiently. I don't know what else to
check, or how to check it. I am electronically challenged, sorry guys. Plus
it is hard to get back behind the PC to do anything. I don't have a 5 volt
power supply. Can I use a 6 volt wall wart?? I didn't see a 5 volt regulator
on the SR-40.
Can someone tell me where to start? And what about the S-9 carrier
at 7.056?? Is that supposed to be there?? I do have an XG-1 signal source,
but I'm not getting anything to the software.
Thanks,
Stan Rife

SR-40 changes for Kenwood IF 8.830MHz
I ordered a pair of crystals at three different frequencies close to
the Kenwood IF. One set on the high side, two sets on the low side,
inductors, and trimmer capacitors to see which one is the easiest to
be able to park the SR-40 so I can look at +-10KHz on the Kenwood
radio without getting signals close to the baseband.
When I get it figured out, I will let the list know which one worked
the best, and we could then order a group buy.
I ordered the following crystals;
35.2512MHz, push this one 20.8KHz up, crystals are cheap, about $0.42 each
35.3037MHz, pull this one 28 KHz down, about $4 each
35.3280MHz, pull this one 56 KHz down, about $1.44 each
Stay tuned, same bat time, same bat channel, but hopefully a
different bat frequency. Now where is that frequency counter?
