softrock40 not working!

Hello Folks,

I just got my Softrock40 kit assembled. I also wrote a GNURadio
program to tune around the +-24khz BW. I plugged in the board and the
green LED glows, but do not hear anything. The coax is not connected
to the antenna. I checked the signals on clocks with my scope (which
cannot accurately measure the frequency at the moment, but there is a
signal there).

Since I do not run Windows at home, and since I do not want to have
too many variables, I am at another place which has a WinXP machine. I
installed all the software (rocky, powerSDR, powedSDRconsole,
sdradio). Currently I am using sdradio to see whether some signal is
coming out. I just cannot hear anything other than the carrier at
7056000, which happens to be there even when I take the audio cable
out of the soundcard input.

I do not have any other signal generator like the XG1 being used by
many of you. Is there some way I can verify that the hardware is
working?

The noise floor is at around -100dbm on SDradio.

When I touch the down portion of the PCB near oscillator, the noise
floow rises to -50 dbm. But I still cannot hear any stations. Again, I
haven't connected an antenna to the cable.

On teh software side, thanks to Cecil and others, I have afew sample
files, which I hope to make use to test my gnuradio script. If it
works with the files, it should work without any issues with
softrock40 too.

I searched the email archives, looks like Stan has faced similar
problem too. I will be touching up all the solder joints again and
trying and will also try to tune my main rig to oscillator frequencies
to see if it is working fine.

I don't see how you expect to hear any stations without an antenna
connected. You must get some kind of signal into the radio in order
to hear something. Do you have a transmitter that you could connect
to a dummy load? If so, set your transmitter to 7.050 Mhz, or
somewhere near there. Transmit a CW signal into the dummy load, and
see if you can pick it up with the softrock. You will still have to
connect some kind of antenna to the SR. Even a piece of wire of a
few feet in length should do for this test.

Check the coil connections Those are the most likely cause of the problem if all the solder joints are OK.

If you have a 40m Tx you could use that for testing, or make a simple test oscillator if you have a suitable crystal.

I soldered all the connections again and my gnuradio software seem to
pickup something from the little board. There is heavu QRM here in
VU-land now. I connected a long wire as the antenna. Have to check
again tomorrow morning. Thanks a lot folks. Will have to refine the
software. It's not release-worthy yet. Will keep the list updated.

I need to build a test oscillator or get an XG1 next.
