Re: Softrock rxtx inop
OK - now it works a little. I indulged in a Startech USB audio card - the kind about the size of a pack of cigarettes, bristling with buttons & connectors, and definitely having a stereo line input.

Re: a recommendation from me
Well, the video showed just 4 turns around the core, but the website referenced to in the video said 10 turns.? Not only that, but I think I had the phasing wrong, so started over, this time with

Re: a recommendation from me
You are right, the core is wrong. These cores are intended for power conversion at low frequencies and you need an HF core.

Re: a recommendation from me
Although I like the loop I built a lot, I don't really care for the active whip.? I've been testing it over the last couple of days.? In almost every case, a random wire I have strung up beats it in

Re: a recommendation from me
Hi Mike,
A short whip will not pick up any garbage even if it does not
have a good ground. The garbage you experience without a goog
RF ground comes from the feedline. Have a look at 35:11

Re: a recommendation from me
The most important part of the short whip antenna is a good RF ground. Otherwise it picks up all the garbage in the vicinity.
I played with it quite a bit recently. Found a relatively quiet spot on my

Re: Softrock sometimes not connecting after boot up
Hi Jon,
On each end of the Si570 are three tabs. Only the middle larger tab on each end of the Si570 is to be soldered to its circuit board pad. Solder bridges between end tabs on either right or

I didn't notice you said the Si570 did change when tuned with the HDSDR program. That means the USB circuit and the Si570 are OK.

The 56.482 is close to the "default" start up frequency of the Si570. Check that pins 7 and 8 are soldered well and not shorted to the metal case of the 570. The USB could also not be working

Wow, wasn't aware of that.? Maybe that's why the receive was weaker than the other HF one I use now.? However, I'll put the SI570 under the magnifier and double check to be sure.? Thanks!

Softrock rxtx inop
Hello,
I built a softrock RXTX some years ago. I think it was around 2012. It worked at the time. Never actually made a contact with it - 1W just wasn't enough power.
I rediscovered it

Good Afternoon Jon,
Your reboot issue may have an RX II hardware problem cause. The HF RX II you recently sent to me for conversion to an LF RX II did not have the right and left end connections of

Could you share the details about your uBITX mods? Sure would be nice to have those 50W. Then I wouldn't
need an external amp for mine. Did you use two supplies - or maybe install a

Re: coax recommendations?
Thanks to all.? However, I seem to have solved the coax issue. Surely I thought the existing RG-8 I have had in place for three decades would no longer be any good, but out of curiosity tested it

Re: coax recommendations?
Zack and Andew, pretty solid suggestions methinks. My shack sports a large spool of LMR400 and one of RG8x. Getting the 400 from outdoors into the shack is nasty, that stuff is STIFF! Since norm here

If you're receiving only, then what about just using plain old 75 ohm RG-6? This stuff is used everywhere for wiring up free-to-air TV antennas and satellite TV dishes. If you're lucky like me, you

Re: coax recommendations?
I use RG-8X for my HF station 100 watts, about 50 feet to the antenna. But
RG-58 would have worked as well. I don't think you need anything beyond
RG-58 for the Softrock. I think for HF and lower VHF,
