Re: PowerSDR Error at Execution

Thanks, Mike.

I got that fixed already. Had to also enable MME and set Priority to high to get rid of the popping. Running the wav files, it appears to work ok.
Although I am not used to the tuning and controls yet. It is very confusing. The filtering seems to work fine though.

Running a SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio card here on an ASUS P4P800D motherboard with 2.4 GHz CPU and 512 MB of ram, Windows XP Pro SP2.

Hi Alex,

congratulations ! V1.02 works without problems on my PC, the sound cards
are identified correctly and the program runs smoothly.
You must also be commended for having had the courage to take the WDM route...
I adventured just through the WMME and the ASIO ones, but felt the WDM
was lacking the documentation I needed to feel at my ease, as you have
pointed out.

I like also the auto balancing feature, something I will have to study
in detail...:-)

As you know, Rocky talks directly to the WDM driver of the audio card. This
is the most promising but least explored method of audio streaming on the
Windows platform. AFAIK, no other SDR program currently uses this method
because WDM streaming is very poorly documented. There is some documentation
on the MS web site that explains how to write WDM drivers - but not how to
use them in applications.

Very nice, Alex. Considering the quality and

winner. My only suggestion is a wider filter esp.
since 40m is such a hodge podge of adjacent modes.

Great job.

Re: Rocky

Hi Ken,

I think I have fixed this problem. Please download Rocky 1.02 from

Rocky does not use ASIO drivers. In fact, ASIO4All, if it is running on the system, may even interfere with WDM streaming.

Also, make sure that no other application is using the sound card when you start Rocky. WDM audio drivers require exclusive access to the device - which is good, BTW, since it allows the program to achieve the maximum speed, and prevents Windows sounds from mixing into the stream..

73 Alex VE3NEA

Dear Alex,
**THANK YOU** very much for Rocky. This looks like a wonderful program. But... I can't get it to recognize any input or output sound devices on my system. I have both the motherboard AC97 and the Delta44 and ASIO loaded, but nothing shows up in the text boxes under setup.

Suggestions?

Hi Alberto,

Thank you for testing Rocky!

As you know, Rocky talks directly to the WDM driver of the audio card. This is the most promising but least explored method of audio streaming on the Windows platform. AFAIK, no other SDR program currently uses this method because WDM streaming is very poorly documented. There is some documentation on the MS web site that explains how to write WDM drivers - but not how to use them in applications.

However, WDM audio streaming is so attractive that someone has to find a way of using it. This is exactly what I am trying to do. Due to lack of documentation, this is to some degree a trial and error process, and I depend heavily on the user feedback since the program works fine on all of my own computers.

I have just uploaded v.1.02 of Rocky to , this may have fixed the problem that you described. Please try the new version and see if the problem if now fixed.

Also, I have written a utility that displays properties of all WDM audio devices on the system, this should help me to figure out what is going on on the systems where Rocky is not working properly. If the device list in Rocky is still blank, I will ask you and all other users who experience the same problem to run the utility and send me the report that it generates. The program is at .

I downloaded V 1.01, but pressing View | Settings the panel that opens
shows no entries for the Input Device and for the Output Device.

In addition, under File the choice Start Radio is grayed out.

Art,

I get the same response. From reading Joe's description of the ground loop condition I think it may be for that reason with my laptop.

I thought the bandwidth of the unusable section was a bit high, but I
have no explanation regarding WHY the shape and amplitude of the
center frequency changes as I tune across the center frequency.

I suspect the sound card is set for full duplex (which isn't
necessary for the softrock), thus the problem might be feedback? My
sound card is a built in one and doesn't appear to be adjustable,
except by a registry entry.

Has anyone observed a similar characteristic, or does everyone's
amplitude and shape of the response change when they tune across the
center of the passband?

Hello all.

Had noise and zero spur (DC...) that were wide and strong (rendered a
swat of 2 khz not usable around the LO freq.)

Saw among the photos what N1RX did with a battery driven SR40 instead
of the USB % volt from the PC.

Connected a battery (through a voltage reg.) to the SR40 instead of the
USB connector and that made a much better S/N but not as good as the
one on the picture.(actually a wallwart floating supply is as good)

Then I disconncted the antenna (which is a trap vertival and not
floating) and found out that by just touching the screen the noise
grew, which is a clear indication of a ground loop.

Added an isolation transformer (actually a UNUN) made by threading 10 T.
of twisted enammeled copper wire throgh a small toroid and got rid of
the ground loop.

Now the zero(dc) spur is about -115dbm (which disappears in the band
noise in the afternoon) and very narrow so I get the whole range of
frequencies free and usefull.

Then to make it simpler and more permanent I cut a groove (with a
dremel) around the BandPass filter to isolate it from the SR40 and the
soundcard ground . That is as good as using the trafo.
You can see a photo on the photos section at Joe's folder.

Hi Alex.

Thank you for the Rocky-software.
Seems to be a very nice program for the softrock40.

Unfortunately I have problems when activating the "Start Radio"-
button. An error occurs: "Unable to start output to SB Live! Wave
Device".

I am running an Soundblaster Live! Value at the moment, but have also
tried an Turtle-Beach card (Santa Cruz) with the same type of error.

On the other hand, on my laptop with onboard soundcard the program is
running OK.

SDR on 50Mhz

Hello all,

First: I did not receive my Softrock-40 yet and everyday new software
popups for it. I guess that I will have trouble to choose when I
receive it.
Thanks to all the developpers for all these neat applications.

I have been interested in SDRs since I discovered Flex Radio a few
years back and the SR-40 will be a good start to experiment.

I am a 6m op and my dream is to developp one exclusively for 6m.

The SDR-1000 does 6m, but it seems it is by chance:
No PA has been developped for it
I did not find any review for the 6m part
The DDS is at is upper limit for 6m and I guess that the spurs are
more of a problem on these frequencies.

My idea is to use a SDR as a variable IF with a downconverter ahead.
The new SDR Version 5 by Tony would be a good start to experiment.

Any idea would be welcome. On my side this is what I think:

A not so high gain preamp (U310 with 10dB gain).
A diode balance mixed (SBL-1 / TUF-1)
A post mixed amplifier (2N3866) followed by an attenuator pad (how
much attenuation?)
A SR Version 5 tunable on 9Mhz (or any other suitable IF)

If that works what about a more high performance SDR. I tried to find
schematics of the latest QSD used in the SDR-100 but did not find
anything.

Re: Rocky and soundcards

Hi Joe,

PowerSDR seems to set Line in Gain programmatically. Rocky does not do this a present time, you have to set the gain manually in the sound card's control panel so that the card is not overloaded. Also, make sure that AGC is turned on in Rocky.

73 Alex VE3NEA

Well as I managed to inject some signal gen. into the SR40 running
under Rocky 1.001 (or whatever the newer version is) and it overloads
very early (- 70 dbm or s9 approx (on the other programs I can go to -
25 dbm before I get the overload and harmonics/spurs all over)) on 96
khz it is the same problem!

I checked to make shure the level of input on the card remained the
same in the mixer but it did. Tried it again on PowerSDR and it work
OK as before.

gnurokr - gnuradio program to listen with softrock40

Folks,

I have a crude first version of a demodulator for softrock, which I
call gnurokr. Currently, it cannot do I/Q correction and other fancy
stuff. It was put together today after assembling my softrock40 kit.
It took lesser time than assembling the hardware itself and
demonstrates the speed at which one can "build" a radio with Software.

I wrote it because I wanted to learn more about GNURadio and also that
all available SDR programs were targetted at non-GNU/Linux platforms.
gnurokr cannot match the facilities provided by those right now and is
not really release worthy, but I hope as time passes by, more stuff
will be added to it.

I hope GNU/Linux users can now rejoice!

The code is available at:
