Re: strategy for custom decals?
开云体育Three suggestionsFor decal paper, Tango Papa is excellent.?
Richard Brennan of TT West does custom decals and is excellent and reasonable. ?
I use PowerPoint to generate decal and sign art. PowerPoint is 300 dpi so a 44x34 slide prints at 1200 dpi. I will do a clinic at the NMRA conv on using PowerPoint for decals and to do great signs a 4x6 matte prints.? Phil Edholm

I'm trying to figure out the best way to get a "custom" decal for an HO locomotive. I have an? unlettered HO tender and I want to put a road number on it, e.g. '4193' What is the best way to get the decals for the digits? Do people cut out the individual numbers from a sheet and butt them together, or are there vendors that print custom decals? If I cut out the individual numbers and butt them together, I'm concerned about getting the alignment and spacing right. Thanks for any pointers. ------------------------------ Please sign your posts so we know who you are Thanks Bruce Wilson Moderating Team/Owner |

Thanks.? I had found those as well, but it's difficult to tell the quality from those little photos :-).? I was hoping for someone who'd bought some that they could recommend as a good product.? Guess I'll go to Michaels and see what I can find. -- The asylum is being run by the inmates! |
Re: asparagus fern.
I found some on Etsy: I bet one dried decorative plant's worth will last you for quite a few model trees. well, digging deeper--I searched for preserved asparagus ferns, and I'm not sure all of them are specifically asparagus fern. there do seem to be some places online that specialize in preserved/dried floral stuff, here's one: btw, not sure if it was asparagus specifically, but I did make some N scale conifers this way once.? they were very nice.? eventually I settled on building a traction layout, so I haven't needed to make so many trees!? but it was kind of relaxing. asparagus fern.
开云体育A little off topic, but I hope someone here has an answer.? I've had good luck building evergreen trees using asparagus(?) fern.? I had a large amount from a kit by a long defunct company, but I'm running out.? I've looked on Amazon and done a google search but can't find anything other that a small amount for decoration. If you know of a source, please let me know.-- The asylum is being run by the inmates! |

Re: New On30 Layout being started
Looks really cool. Maybe a little more info might be helpful.? Some questions that come to mind...
Are you planning to operate on it and if so, do you have an operating scheme for this? Understanding some of that might help to identify any problems or concerns. You say modular, does that mean portable (i.e., Freemo) and if so are you planning to interface with other modules?? Is there a set of standards?? Or is this "sectional" as in the a building technique to segment the layout but without the intent to move it.? My layout at home is the latter. Either way, be careful how close turnouts are to the edges of modules and how elevation change between modules are handled. Also, for the hidden track in the back corner of module 3, give yourself a way to reach it to clean track and deal with derailments.? Murphy loves to operate, too! For ops, is Mod1 a small terminal yard and is that the log pond? Trains shove empties up from the Mod1 to the camp in Mod 4/5? Bring loads down? Is the dock the interchange with the rest of the world?? So, finished goods from the mill are sent to the dock? Does the dock contain a car float (to bring cars on/off the layout)? Where do the ore cars go? Come from?? Finished goods and supplies sent up to the camps? Equipment to the mine? People up and down? You may have all this figured out, but that's the key to the design. I don't know if you are running a caboose on anything, so that should be planned into your run around and lengths.? Also, would you run 1 train at a time, or more than one.? That should be clear too. When you say self contained lighting and power, do you mean that each has it's own lighting and power bus connected in sequence A to B, B to A, etcc?? Or does that mean you have a command station or booster for each one and separate DC power supply and bus for each one?? I am not sure if that's what you mean and if so, why are you doing that - to run only 2 modules at a time?? I'd imagine there are other ways to accomplish that with less effort. Can't wait to see how it progresses.? Mike |
