Nobody seems to have posted anything for quite some time.? So here, you can model this, or your own version:

Jim,

I am building a sectional layout in a spare bedroom here in Kauai, HI. I have supported the sections (which are 1-1/2” thick) on 21” metal shelf brackets lagged into the stud framing in the room’s walls. I have been documenting the construction in N-Scale Magazine for the past three years. (Things move slower in the islands!)

RE: Cameos

While in California, I helped build a couple of cameos that were part of a modular Nn3 logging layout that made the rounds of the train shows. These portrayed a “Landing”, a “Camp”, and Jughandle trestle. (A sawmill/doghole section was under construction when I moved to Hawaii.) As you are planning, each cameo had its own built-in lighting, based on a design by Joe DuVivier. This incorporated LED strips for “ambient” lighting (which could be adjusted for color and brightness) plus a powerful LED spotlight at one end of each cameo that bounced light off a mirror at the other end to create strong daylight shadows. ?See images below, both of the overall set-up and of the individual “scenes”:

Subject: [small-layout-design] New On30 Layout being started

?

This is the most current version of my On30 Layout being built in my spare room. ?The layout is a multi Cameo set of modules that suggest a turn of the century mining/logging operation oon the inside passage on the west coast of British Columbia. ?each module features self contained lighting and power for DCC operations. ?Motive mower is geared locomotives and short industrial freight cars. ?feel free to comment. ?Layout module frames have been built and are awaiting final plan authority of the resident accountant. Modules 1&2 form one scene and modules 3&4 are a separate Mine and Log Camp up in the mountains beyond the Logging Mill/Dock.

Re: New On30 Layout being started

Jim have you considered making the dock module larger & have it come off module 1 at ~30deg.?? You haven't explained what the brown boxes represent.? Could the switchback module come off module 4 at an angle to give more running room & move the turnout further from the module joint?? ?Also, why not continue your grade climb through?modules 3 & 4 & back onto 3 so the mine track on 3 is 5 to 6" above 0 & place the mine & bunkers above that?? Move the mine into the back?corner to give better visual separation from the sawmill module or use separate?proscenium setups for modules 1/2 & 3/4/5 to define the 2 spaces?

On my On30 module designs I'm going to model Ontario hardwood logging operations.? Since this operation normally had enormous drying yards I'll just model a spur disappearing behind stacks of drying lumber & through the backdrop.? This will leave the option for loads in/empties out at some future date.? The attached layout shows what one version of my design.

Re: New On30 Layout being started

Jim,? Looking nice.? I'm a big proponent of modular layouts from my Trolley modelling days. We used to bring modules to meeting sites and set up layouts to operate our trolleys.

Good Luck with yours!

Looks good. Hope the finance committee gives you the OK.

Re: Jouef HO Turnout Radius?

Their website says that their smaller turnouts or points have a 438mm or 17.25 inch radius. Interestingly they have curved turnouts and they state that both tracks have that radius! It looks like they use very short points on those.

Jouef HO Turnout Radius?

I saw some photos of Jouef HO turnouts.? The radius looked pretty tight, and looks curved throughout, somewhat like classic Atlas HO Snap Switches.? One eBay'er, selling similar curves, said those were of radius 385 mm. 385mm is 15.16" -- can anybody confirm it, and tell what the turnout and track geometry is?

Discussion of the design and construction of small model railroad layouts.

PLEASE NOTE WE DO NOT ACCEPT SALES AND WANTS ADVERTS - EBAY IS THERE FOR THEM.

This group is intended for the average model railroader who does not have an entire basement or even an entire room to devote to a layout. Here we will discuss smaller layouts -- table-tops, shelf layouts, micro-layouts, modules and modular layouts -- and how they can be designed and built for enjoyment and modelling satisfaction.

The above is an example borrowed from Carl Arendt's excellent site

Next Month: Central Coast Railroad Festival Layout Tour

Next Month: Central Coast Railroad Festival Layout Tour

This tour is an official event of the Festival and will take place on October 5-8 in San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara Counties.
There are several very nice small layouts on this tour.

The tour is free and self-guided except for an admission charge at the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum. There are thirty railroads at seventeen venues on this tour.

The list of layouts with schedules, locations and descriptions is on the Festival’s website:

Also on this link are three area maps showing the general locations of the venues.

There are many other Festival activities to enjoy so check out the Central Coast Railroad Festival website:

Recheck the layout list in early October for revisions.

Persons taking this tour assume all risks and liability for their personal safety.

Layouts Needed - Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society Convention

Layouts Needed - Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society Convention

This is the last call for owners to display their home model railroads during the Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society Convention in Bakersfield, CA.

The Convention Committee is seeking model railroads within an hour's driving distance of Bakersfield.

Model railroads of any scale are welcome. They need not be “complete” but should be operational.

All you will need to do is operate your trains. I will do all the planning, organizing and publicity.

This will be a free, self-guided tour, limited to Convention attendees. No buses will be used.

If you have any questions before committing to the tour, please ask. In any event, please e-mail me (OFF LIST) in the next several days if you are interested so we can add your railroad to the tour. Once you have been added to the tour I will contact you to set your day(s) and hours.

Thank you.

Convention Dates:

Wednesday, October 25 through Saturday, October 28

LAST CALL: Show Your Railroad - Central Coast Railroad Festival

LAST CALL: Show Your Railroad - Central Coast Railroad Festival

This is the last call for model railroads to participate in the Central Coast Railroad Festival layout tour.

The Festival returns this year to San Luis Obispo County and northern San Barbara County on October 6-8 (Friday-Sunday).

As in past years I will organize a tour of model railroads and garden railroads. We currently have over thirty railroads on the tour.

I would like you to consider participating in the tour.

Participating in a layout tour is a great way to share your work and meet your fellow model railroaders. You’ve probably worked hard on your railroad so you might as well get some recognition from people who will appreciate your efforts.

We are only asking owners to be open for four or more hours on just one day. Additional days and hours are at the owner’s option, including "early bird" showings on Thursday, October 5. And we are asking owners in Santa Maria and areas south of Santa Maria to be open only on Sunday, October 8.

All you need to do is operate your trains. I will do all the planning and publicity, as I have done for sixty-two previously tours since 2006, including ten previous tours for the Central Coast Railroad Festival.

This will be a free, self-guided tour. No buses will be used.

If you have any questions before committing to the tour, please ask. In any event, please contact me (OFF LIST by e-mail) in the next several days if you are interested so we can add your railroad to the tour and also set your day(s) and hours.

The deadline to join the tour is Saturday, August 26.

Thank you.
