Re: Small plans on the web???
Is 20 square feet a space one by 20, 2 by 10, or 4 by 5 Darryl (and list), 20' square is just an estimation. I'm an apartment dweller and usually find small 'shelf' layouts to be all I can find room for. In the apartment I'm in now, for example, I have had layouts of 6'x6'; 6'x10';and 8'x12' in the last two years. None have been any wider than 16" and all were simply "L" shaped (no continuous running). The reasons for the changes are not because I was un happy with either the layouts construction or design, but because of the small living quaters I have. I find the layout gets "too heavy" in any given corner of the apartment and, like the furniture, I want to re- arrange my house to have a fresh perspective. (My wife has allot to do with this.) 5 years ago I switched from N to HO because I beleive that I can enjoy the detail in the small space better with HO than in N. When the sapce is too small for much of a railroad - even in N - you need to fill it with more detailing and less stuff. This is just an opinion, but it fits with what I like. Anyway, I guess you could say that I'm just searching for new idea's. Then, if I find one I like, I can see where in my small place I can put it. Thanks for your time, Donovan in Dallas |

Darryl Huffman
Dononvan in Dallas asked about small track plans.
Donovan, About 6 years ago I began subscriptions to two English magazines: Continental Modeller and Railway Modeller. These magazines specialize in layout designs for small areas. There are also several English track plan books available. When you go through other model railroad magazines, look for portions of track plans to see if anything strikes your fancy. Give us some ideas about what your interests are and what scale or scales you like to work in. Small plans on the web???
I've been posting track plans to this group (and others), and I've
seen the other files posted to this group. Occasionally I will get to a new web site that someone has a link to with good designs I can view (I have about 20 ear-marked right now). But....are there others? I'd hoped there would be oodles of them when I first got my own computer last year, but after searching the web I still am dissapointed in the variety available to those of us with smaller spaces available. Any good suggestions would be welcome. Donovan in Dallas PS Remember, by small I mean less than 20 square feet. |
SnowCat & Western RR v1.0
Hello group,
I have just uploaded a jpg of the first draft of my layout I am planning. The grid is set on 1 foot squares. I am modeling a freelance N scale RR set in the early 50's. The track that is just hanging out there goes to a helix I haven't put into the plan yet. That track is being elevated as it goes so the elevation starts at the turnout and reaches almost 3 inches at the beginning of the helix. Please review the plan and let me know what needs to be changed. The yard is one of my biggest concerns. The track coming in around the back of the plan or on the outside of the 'U' comes from the left side which is a staging yard under the helix and then around the town and into Hayle Yards. This is mainly used as an interchange track with the SP and SnowCat & Western RR. The lower run or inner 'U' track is a local freight that will also go up the helix to another level once completed. The dark line between the staging tracks and the three industries I have out there is a backdrop that will reach from lower level to the upper level. I am new at this but am trying to make sure I keep the Yard 10 commandments in mind while I was designing it. Please comment the heck out of it so that I can try to eliminate any bottle necks or troubles I might encounter. The main will have #6 turnouts and once in the yard, it goes to #4. Thank you so much for your time and suggestions on this. John Summers CEO SnowCat & Western RR |

Alexandria next to the river up near the power plant and see the curving track that serves two warehouses with a very sharp turnout to make a second track for the one warehouse. Definitely something to model. Or come out towards Reston and follow the W&OD trail to see some 100+ year old culverts, the old station a Wiehle, the brick City Hall that became the bonded warehouse for the distillery and the town Gazebo by the ice skating pond. Purcellville at the end of the 45 mile trail has a restored station, funky feed mill and other sheds from railroad days along with a 4th of July parade. Old station at herndon is also restored as a museum. Grandad's Hobby Shop in Springfield-Braddock Road exit off 495 take the road on the east side of the shopping center about 1/2 mile it is on the right si about the best all around store in the area. Welcome to the group. I also fit your category of being in and out of it for about 25 years. Since I've retired this past January, I've started taking a more active interest in the hobby. I haven't a layout, yet, as I'm taking my time to think about what I really want to get out of it. I know myself well enough to know that building is, to me, more fun than actually running the trains, so I'll certainly have a continuous loop somewhere in the plan. I'll probably put enough staging, etc. into it to give operation a try. An interurban line used to pass directly in front of our house (of course, the house wasn't there at the time) so I've gotten interested in modeling that line with a twist - it survived into the fifties and gave trackage rights to some of the railroads. That way, I can also have steam and early diesels. -- Carol & Jerry Jankura Strongsville, Ohio So many toys, so little time -----Original Message-----

Yet another Newcomer
Hello, my name is Terry Kift and I am on the verge of building my
first layout. It will be in N-Scale and though I am a member of a model railroad group who wants to fill my 10'X15' room up with layout, I need to start small. I have been armchair modeling for a few years now and have been a member of a previous n-scale club. I hope to build a good size switching layout to incoporate into the larger layout later. I'll have some ideas to throw out soon. Thanks. |

Evan Batchelor
Hiya,
I was looking through the files section the other day and came across the plan for Box Street. By the time I had thought about contacting the designer, the file had been deleted. Does anybody want to own up to this wondrous wee design?? Its got me quite intrigued, and I have a few questions for the designer... Ev. :-) Nelson, New Zealand |

Bill, There is no switchback through the backdrop on my layout plan.
Are you thinking of "Guelph RR" by Michael Denny, that was also recently uploaded to the file area? My layout is labelled "Branch1". Did I mention that John Wright's Federal Street layout is amazing? The turntable has some ideas I might be able to use. Maurice Grimes Kingston, PA, USA |

staging. I was thinking that cars would arrive on scene from the left end then have to be properly organized -- red box car to spot #1, yellow box top #2 etc. given the switch back they would be ahead of the loco departing the runaround. Of course you would have to pull the cars that are already there-maybe #2 has to be worked into the cut because it has to stay another shift. Bill Uffelman -----Original Message-----

Ok, I saw several files that were in both groups file area and so I assumed that Yahoo made us share. "I like your new plan--any chance you can use a curved turnout at the left end to lenghten the runaround a little?" A curved tunrout would be nice, but I don't know of a commercially available Code83 curved turnout with a 15 inch radius. Hand-laying is not something I am interested in right now. "The switch back to the off scene staging would offer an oppurtunity for "sure spot" switching to a hidden industry. The cars would have to be in a certain order to line up with unseen doors, ramps or what ever at the hidden site. The hole in the backdrop could be between buildings with an overhead 3rd story bridge implying that the rail service is on the other side." I am not sure where you are suggesting this. I understand the concept, Tony Koester wrote about it in MRP 1995. "Have fun.
