A Real Trouper 6
As I said, the saga of the little green heron (who either fell from his nest or jumped from it when his mom didn¡¯t return), is an incredibly heartwrenching but ultimately inspiring story of courage and perseverance triumphing against all odds. When we finally got a volunteer from the Sacramento area heron and egret rescue organization to come out and take a look, she said that she did find a nest right above where this little guy was hanging out and sadly there was a deceased baby bird in it that could well have been one of his siblings who didn¡¯t make it. To give you an idea of how hard this little bird had to fight to survive, Check out these photos of him climbing up that chain link fence because he couldn¡¯t fly yet, stretching out his neck to pull himself up! He made it to the top and paced back-and-forth frantically looking up into the trees as if hoping against hope his mom would appear but knowing he could not yet fly back up there to take shelter. The wildlife volunteer told us that although she feared for his survival, especially at night without feathers to keep him warm, we really couldn¡¯t ¡°rescue¡± him so we just had to let nature take its course and watch him struggle to survive- which amazingly, he ultimately did!

Green Heron Photos 2
Subhash- you have no idea how much those photos mean to me and Morris! First of all, they are great photos! It¡¯s like that bird was posing just for you! We especially love the one of him preening¡.. Secondly, young green herons are near and dear to our hearts! From mid-June to early July, Morris and I were going every evening to the Pocket Canal Parkway to visit a little green heron baby/juvenile that was all alone with no adult. Just a little ball of fuzz that was frantically pacing back-and-forth on the bank of the canal looking for his mom. I have videos that would bring tears to your eyes! But the good news is- as we watched him grow and struggle to survive, our hearts were warmed by his courage and perseverance. I so wanted to post something to the group but I was overwhelmed with so many great photos and videos, I didn¡¯t quite know what to choose! But when you posted your photos, I knew I had to tell the group about our amazing experience and share the story of this little trouper You ask if it¡¯s common for green herons to stretch out their necks like that and I can tell you emphatically that yes it is! At least when they are young. We had seen adult green herons at the canal before and never saw them do that. But this little guy most certainly did it! And he looked like a totally different bird when he did! Here is a series of photos of him from the first day we saw him to the last. Maybe he¡¯s over at Babel Slough now where the habitat is more pleasing to green herons! We will definitely go check it out so thanks again for posting those great photos! the hardy heron
Thanks, Di and Morris! Having been lucky enough to share in some of these sightings with you guys, we're so happy to re-live them through these inspiring photos and videos. It was, for us, the story of the summer! Bittern 6
Usually when I see an American Bittern, it is mostly hidden among reeds in a wetland. This week I got some clear views at Babel Slough. Subhash

Mourning Dove 4
Often I identify the Mourning Dove by its body shape and brown plumage with black marks. Recently I saw a bird's colorful face and it didn't immediately register as a dove because its body was hidden in a basket below the seed feeder. Subhash

Hoots versus toots! Owl 1, Skunk 0 Forgot to post ... we went to open windows late Sunday night and as we opened the shutter slats we were surprised to see this on our front courtyard wall. Pictures aren't too bad considering I used my iPhone through the slat opening, in night mode with no flash. Luckily no smell either. Peggy

Hello, Took this photo of a pelican and his friends. They look like terns to me but that seems odd for the Feather River area in Yuba City. Can anyone help identify the friends? Donna :)

Birding along American River Parkway 7
If you bird along the American River Parkway, you can help preserve it! One of the last wildlife sanctuaries along the Lower American River is in danger of disappearing forever. Tell the Central Valley Flood Protection Board that private projects should not be allowed to set precedent by encroaching into the American River designated floodway. This is an important item pertaining to the Central Valley Flood Protection Board's review of the Trumark application for variances to the Board's regulations prohibiting the developer from building homes in the designated floodway of the Kassis property. BACKGROUND The Kassis property in Rancho Cordova is one of the last sizable areas of open space along the American River Parkway. The City is poised to let Trumark, an out-of-town developer, wipe out a critical refuge for wildlife to build 24 million dollar homes with river views. See the development proposal. The upper 21 acres of the Kassis property adjacent to Folsom Blvd. is suitable for development, but the lower 20 acres along the Lower American River is in the floodway and must be preserved. If you haven't already, please sign the petition. For more info, check out: https://www.sarariverwatch.org/kassis_property-rancho-cordova I have signed the petition and hope you will too. Subhash

...that "odd goose" could be a seasoning... 2
It's actually called a "Salt and Pepper" Canadian Goose! I find it quite distinguished and handsome. ? We saw this beautiful bird three days last week at our backyard fountain. The Merlin app told us they are very common this time of year in our area but it was the first one we had ever seen in our yard before. Rufous Hummingbird? 9
This little fellow has been hanging around the last couple mornings. In the first two photos, he was taking a bath in our fountain just before sunrise. And in the third photo, taken the following morning, he was having breakfast just after sunrise. Do you all agree that these three photos are indeed of the same bird? If so, this is another great example of how different a bird can look in varying light conditions and also when he is wet! And are we right that it¡¯s a Rufous hummingbird and not an Allen¡¯s? We see plenty of hummingbirds in our yard every day- at the fountain, on our flowering plants, and also on the three feeders we have in various locations- but we had never before seen the likes of this little fellow so any input would be appreciated!
