Re: Need documentation for SS-32M tone encoder

Will this help??? It's on repeater-builder.??

The diagram at the top right shows that solder pad #1 is the one at the corner of the board, and the tone table lists the tones.

My memory of the one (only one) SS32M that I played with a number of years ago is that a solder blob is a zero,
so no blobs is all ones which is tone #32 which is 203.5 Hz.

I'm not sure which is number 1 as the board is not labeled. There is a
sticker applied to the inside of the radio's cover that shows the tone
legend but it is also mum on which pin should be number 1. I also have
to raise the deviation as it barely registers on my service monitor.

Would a picture of it be of help?

?Yeah, it's not pretty.? When I first saw that the amp wasn't working correctly (after taking these pics), I actually desoldered and removed the FET to make sure that the solder job wasn't part of the problem. The copper heatspreader is actually way thicker than the PCB, so the FET actually sits a considerable height above the board.? Whoever put the FET in, actually placed a small piece of lead from a through-hole component under the Drain and Gate leads to help give the solder something to flow onto when bridging the gap between the FET & PCB.

One drawback is that it does not appear to have a place to connect PTT. From what I can tell, it appears to only have RF sense.

Call your local Kenwood dealer and purchase the software - or reach out to one of the several on this list and buy it from them.

Re: VHF MTR2000 Poor Receive Performance

Yikes!!? This tells me you need to read up on calibrations first.? If "someone said" it was 1kc low, then you can't trust anything.? Period.
You have a R1200?? Like 50 years old?? I would be looking for what is wrong with it.? All equipment has weak and strong points.? It is
very important to get used to what to expect from your equipment.? If this instrument is "new to you", you need to learn all you can
about the maintenance issues of that instrument, and how to calibrate and how to come up with calibration techniques and to understand
the limitations and uncertaintees you may encounter.? Then take it to a friend with much better equipment and compare and get some
more tips.?

On VHF conventional, we were always taught to set to better than 100Hz error.?? Very much better for simulcast systems and systems
that are co-channel so you can reduce heterodynes in normal operation. ? Back in the 80s we were required to have our service
monitors within 4hz of the primary standard on 800 Mhz in order to be able to qualify to be able to "touch" the equipment.? It sounds
to me that you have a very good chance of making things worse.?

Don't be afraid to put the machine up as is.? After you get your service monitor all checked out and trustworthy you will have room
for improvement that users will notice (fur sure they always complain).? If you wait too long you might find something else on your
frequency.? Do you even have time before the snow is a problem?

I don¡¯t know if the receiver is on frequency, I guess I should figure out how to do that.

1 dB less than that is typically what I get out of a MASTR II or MVP, which has the same spec. However, at least here in SoCal that's pretty much equal to the noise floor on 2 meters. Depending on the site I may or may not try adding a preamp; in most cases no because the actual S/N improvement is insignificant. However at 0.4 uV that's 2 dB worse, which in most cases would clearly be throwing away S/N. So I wouldn't be happy with 0.4 uV either - worth getting that 1 dB or (hopefully) more back.
