Re: trying to read data on a kenwood 851 repeater
Hi Butch,
I'm not familiar with the 851, but my first thought would be is this a repeater that was used? If so, did you first test it on its original frequency? If you moved it too for it may be a PLL tuning problem.
I don't know if you have to retune the PLL on an 851 if you move it a lot in frequency.

See Chris's comments about the fuse.
BTW, the only reason to use the mic jack is if you're updating the firmware (or don't want to otherwise with the rear panel DB25).

?
I'm listening to the noise on the repeater
speaker.? As far as out of descriminator, I don't know, and not sure where
to find that.? I'm totally blind, so can't read the manual.? The noise
is transmitted if I turn on the repeat mode.?

Transmitter off? ? And if so, take the fact that it's a repeater
totally out of the picture. ? Because it's not a repeater at that point,
it's only a receiver.? So are you listening to this noise that comes in on
the monitor speaker??? What does the noise do if you listen to the
output of the discriminator?
And if your receive sensitivity is down 10 db, the issues are likely
related.

Thought on frying bacon sound
1.
have you fed a signal from something else, instead 2. is the signal from
the 1200 clean, too strong 3. can you insert an attenuator in the signal
line 4. how are you feeding this 1200 signal - direct or via an
antenna 5. figure out why the 'minute or so' delay is
relevant
We'll take your word that it sound like frying
bacon.. There is no mistaking the smell of it :)

See Chris's comments about the fuse.
BTW, the only reason to use the mic jack is if you're updating the firmware (or don't want to otherwise with the rear panel DB25).
Good to hear you're good to go

Re: trying to read data on a kenwood 851 repeater
Transmitter off? ? And if so, take the fact that it's a repeater totally out of the picture. ? Because it's not a repeater at that point, it's only a receiver.? So are you listening to this noise that comes in on the monitor speaker??? What does the noise do if you listen to the output of the discriminator?
And if your receive sensitivity is down 10 db, the issues are likely related.

Thought on frying bacon sound
1. have you fed a signal from something else, instead
2. is the signal from the 1200 clean, too strong
3. can you insert an attenuator in the signal line
4. how are you feeding this 1200 signal - direct or via an
antenna
5. figure out why the 'minute or so' delay is relevant
We'll take your word that it sound like frying bacon..
There is no mistaking the smell of it :)

If it is doing that and a) the TX is off and b) you're sure it's not your service monitor then the only option left is the RX itself Ken At 04:36 PM 5/10/2025, you wrote: this on the bench with a service monitor. dummy load on the transmitter, repeat mode turnede off. Give me a call later on tomorrow, since leaving soon.

The repeater has a noise on receive like bacon frying. Not sure what is causing that. I can give you a call if you want to listen to it. kind of a crackling noise. I haven't tried adjusting anything yet, but sensativity is poor even on the 151.1875 frequency.

That's good to know thanks. Hopefully my little laptop comes by Wednesday because tentatively planning on going back to the site in portage on Thursday to visit the lady Buggs, well OK not really, but putting up the Lincoln tenor for the repeaters and figuring out what is going on with my DNC. I turned it on and it gives me a little Gibberish character, but then I turn it off and back on again and then it works. Might have to just flush the whole TNC and start over. Would like it just to power up and work because if there's a power failure and that TNC comes back on then it won't power up correctly and I'm 70+ miles away from the site with no transportation. Re: trying to read data on a kenwood 851 repeater
Another thought is have you tried keying up a radio next to the repeater without your service monitor? And then if you listen to it on another radio, does it still have the noise? Yes Chad Nelson WI9HF/WRPL979 Janesville Wisconsin 608-754-8671 Send from my spectrum iPhone 16.

Re: trying to read data on a kenwood 851 repeater
signal from ifr is fine on another radio. I've tried varying strength which makes no difference. Feeding output from ifr directly into the repeater receiver. Transmitter is off. The attached recording starts with a cold startI then pause recording and the noise you hear is after repeater has warmed up a couple minutes. I don't know if it is related, but receiver sensativity is down ten db or more from my other kenwood repeaters. Thanks.

Re: Broadcast audio on repeater receive audio
What about putting a dummy load directly on the 420 receiver. Then, using an HT, transmit a signal near the receiver. If the FM station audio goes away, the problem is external to the equipment, possibly intermod. If you still hear the FM audio the problem is in the receive equipment. At least that is a start at locating where it is coming from.

Thought on frying bacon sound
1. have you fed a signal from something else, instead 2. is the signal from the 1200 clean, too strong 3. can you insert an attenuator in the signal line 4. how are you feeding this 1200 signal - direct or via an antenna 5. figure out why the 'minute or so' delay is relevant
We'll take your word that it sound like frying bacon.. There is no mistaking the smell of it :)

Broadcast audio on repeater receive audio
This one is playing hell with my sanity.
?
I've got a 440 site with a 420 link radio that has broadcast audio from 95.7FM coming in along with the repeater receiver audio. I can dial it down to zero using the controller's audio input pot, so I'd assume it's coming in on the RX audio line. The audio level of the broadcast audio is significantly lower than the repeat audio, so the repeater is still usable, it's just... Highly annoying.
?
Switched all audio lines over to RG174. Tried grounding both ends of the shield, one end of the shield, the other end of the shield, nothing. Tried some ferrites (the ones that come with the Quantar and AstroTAC equipment), no luck. Tried them everywhere. AC lines, audio lines, control lines, no change.
?
Only noticeable change is that when the RX audio line shield of the 174 is grounded, the audio level of the broadcast FM increases.
?
Receiver is a Tait T800-I slimline. I wonder if it's all the exposed wiring on the back side of it that's picking this up.
?
I've tried just about everything I can think of with regard to shielding and ferrites. I don't believe that RF is getting into the controller itself directly, it's obviously coming in on the RX audio line.
?
At this point I am considering swapping the Tait with a TKR-840 so there isn't so much exposed wiring, nor a need for an outboard PL encoder/decoder which could be part of this (but I tried ferrites on all of its cabling as well.

Re: trying to read data on a kenwood 851 repeater
this on the bench with a service monitor. dummy load on the transmitter, repeat mode turnede off. When first turned on, sounds nice and quiet. AFter a minute or so, gets a noise like bacon frying. Of course it is repeated if I turn on the transmitter. As I said, just feeding a signal into the receiver with my ifr 1200.

I changed frequency to 442.100. But not sure about the crackle. I tried it here and didn't notice any noise on RX.

BTW, the only reason to use the mic jack is if you're updating the firmware (or don't want to otherwise with the rear panel DB25).

FS More antenna & guy wire at Hamvention
Guys,
In addition to the list of guy wire that I sent yesterday, I will be bringing the following antenna and guy wire:
350 Feet of 1/8" galvanized stranded steel antenna, or light-weight guy,? ????wire - $10 225 Feet of 5/16" Stainless stranded guy wire - $10 145 Feet of 1/8" stranded wire rope - $8 160 Feet of copper clad solid steel antenna wire - $8 200 Feet of copper clad solid steel antenna wire - $10 90 Feet of copper clad solid steel antenna wire - $3 50 Feet of 1/4" stainless stranded guy wire - $5 39 Feet of 1/8" steel wire - FREE 35 Feet of 1/4" solid aluminum ground wire - $15
Again, lengths are close, but may not exact.??
I have all of the above loaded in my van, so they will be there next weekend. The pieces I listed yesterday are big and heavy, so I'd rather not bother with taking them if nobody wants any of them.
In addition to the MII, Bird and DB items listed yesterday, I'm also bringing a nice R-390, Viking II, Collins 180L antenna tuner, and a whole lot of other stuph, so please stop by my fleamarket spaces 9404 and 9405 (at the very North end of the fleamarket, not far from the home-made icecream truck) and say "HI".
Y'all have a safe trip to and from the Hamvention!
