Re: Some Io-B from today (April 16, 2025), Dark Sky Observatory
Thanks, Dave, for your comments.? A question for you:? I noticed in an earlier post by you that you posted RCP-LCP images, that is the difference between a Right Circularly Polarized and a Left Circularly Polarized spectrograms.? The advantage, of course, is that, in the case of Io-A and Io-B which are both RCP, one can subtract the background (the LCP spectrogram) and see the Jovian radiation more clearly.? How do you do that subtraction?? Do you do it in hardware, or do you subtract the data after the fact in software?? If the latter, what software do you use?
?
Best wishes,? Richard |

The portion of the ionosphere's F layer exposed to the normal solar X-ray flux -- i.e., the daytime side of Earth -- is much more ionized, making it a much better reflector of HF band radio waves than the less ionized night-time portion existing in Earth's shadow. This diurnal increase in F layer ionization has two effects on ground-level observation of Jovian DAM: 1) The daytime F layer attenuates Jovian DAM on its way to a terrestrial observer. 2) The daytime F layer supports terrestrial upper HF band propagation, causing an increase in the band noise background against which Jovian DAM must be observed. These effects make it much more difficult -- but not impossible -- to observe Jovian DAM during the day. Having an observing site with low to zero RFI -- the most important aspect -- along with a good antenna and a good receiver all help to increase the probability of observing Jovian DAM during the day. -- Dave On 4/17/25 07:38, Steve Chaters via groups.io wrote:

Re: Some Io-B from today (April 16, 2025), Dark Sky Observatory
I saw the Io B event in advance but did not bother to observe as it has been my understanding that you cannot pick up a signal from Jupiter while the Sun is in the sky:? the electro-magnetic waves from the Sun is supposed to flood the ionosphere and drown out any signals coming from Jupiter.? Yet Richard was able to pick up Jovian signals during the afternoon.? So I am mistaken, but how?

Hi All,
?
Quite a bit of Io-B was recorded this afternoon from the Dark Sky Observatory.? I am only posting the best bits.?

Re: Installing SDRPlay RSP with SDRPlay2RSS and Radio-Sky Spectrograph
We used to get that same error message after we had closed the SDRuno program using the "x" in the top-right corner. For some reason, it is best to go to "File" then "Exit" to avoid that "system argument error." That said, the fix for use was to just restart the computer and try again. Hope that helps. ?
