ARS Spartan Sprint - Monday Evening QRP Fun!
Overview & Rule Summary FOR THE ADVENTURE RADIO SOCIETY SPARTAN SPRINT What is an ARS Spartan Sprint and how can I participate? The Adventure Radio Society Spartan Sprint is a two hour casual QRP contest. It is held on the first Monday of every month to encourage QRP operators to get on and go to somewhere near the standard QRP frequencies on the 80-40-20-15-10 Meter bands for an evening of fun. It is open to all QRP CW operators ¨C there is not any membership requirement. Operating portable and/or using lightweight minimalist (spartan) equipment is encouraged, but is not required. THE CONTEST PERIOD FOR EACH TIME ZONE IS: EASTERN 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Local. CENTRAL 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Local MOUNTAIN 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Local PACIFIC 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Local Does not shift for DST ¨C This event is always at these Local Times (UTC for STANDARD TIME : 0100Z to 0300Z) (UTC for DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME : 0000Z to 0200Z) POWER OUTPUT To keep with its minimalist theme, Maximum Spartan Sprint power output is 5 watts. However, a Spartan Sprint participant running 5 watts who is submitting results is allowed to work a non-QRP station. That contact will count. (A Non-QRP station is not permitted to submit results for this QRP event.) OPERATION We operate CW on 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters, around standard QRP frequencies. Call CQ SP Or listen for calling stations. EXCHANGE - Your Call Sign - Your State or Province - Your Power output SCORING Scoring is somewhat unique - score is calculated based on [Number of Contacts] / [Station Weight]. Working the same station on a different band counts as another contact. The weight of your station consists of everything except your antenna and feed line. If your station includes your home-based rig, antenna tuner, DC power supply, heavy paddle or bug - obviously you are not lightweight - simply report your weight as 30 lbs. (That is the default weight for the Tubby division.) REPORTING To report your results, go to 3830scores.com, and select the ¡®ARS Spartan Sprint¡¯ (on the Left side). You will enter your [Station Weight] and the [Number of Contacts] that you made. Soapbox comments may include your power, equipment, antennas, band conditions, outdoor experiences, and anything else you wish to comment on. Scores will be Automatically Calculated Reports will be available for both the Skinny (lightweight) and Tubby (heavyweight) entrants. WORKING HIGHER-POWERED STATIONS: You may be contacted by a higher-powered station who is not familiar with the Spartan Sprint and its rules. As long as you are running QRP, you may count that QSO. Looking forward to working you during the next Spartan Sprint. 73, Jody ¨C K3JZD on behalf of Russ Carpenter - AA7QU and Richard Fisher - KI6SN The Adventure Radio Society Pioneers Last Updated : 03APR25 Mark Prather - WB9HFK Celebrating my 54th year as an Amateur Radio (Ham) Operator.

Michigan QRP Club Weekly Zoom Chat
We had seven folks join the MI QRP Zoom Chat on 03 April. Please join us Thursday April 10 (and every Thursday) at 4PM Eastern for the Michigan QRP Club weekly QRP Chat where the main topics will be QRP and other ham interests. New hams are encouraged to participate and ask questions. It's fun, it's easy, and it's free. You only need a computer, a smart phone, or a tablet that can connect to the Internet. OR if you can't be close to any of those you can join by audio with any standard phone. Just follow the directions below. No software needs be loaded or installed. Anyone can join and non members are welcome. Details are here: https://www.miqrp.net/zoom Zoom ID: 811 0835 6229 The topic for Thursday, 10 April will be an open forum. Ed AB8DF Ernie NE3TE Tony W8CDC Stan WB8QJZ Stuart M0SGV John K4XNY Jean in France John is near Atlanta. He has a 50 foot end feed in the backyard, 20 meter dipole and a 17 foot Chameleon antenna vertical. He uses a Wolf River coil for 40 meters with the 17 foot vertical. https://chameleonantenna.com/collections/vertical-antennas/products/stainless-steal-whip Ernie just got a NANOVNA and wants to test a choke he built. But Taxes!!! are limiting his haming. Stuart got his Michigan Mighty Mite to work and will add some LPF from QRP Labs before getting on the air with it. He just got a TinySA but has not played with it yet. Stan is doing some Slow scan TV using satellites. ISS is one of the birds he¡¯s is playing with. We all want to hear about the results next week. Tony survived all of the bad weather. Got a Michigan Mighty Mite board from the QRP Guys and is going though his junk box to see what parts he may need to order. Ernie is still looking at that the PERformer Antenna and how to add weight to stabilize the tripod. Here are articles that has some info on elevated radials: https://rudys.typepad.com/files/qst-march-2010-ground-systems.pdf https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LwSbXXeovjJdT8ijpOi-9FYR--nNsxgD/view Jean in France could not get the audio to work. We all hope he can join us next time. We talked about the new Yaesu QRP radio and the rumors about it. One rumor was that it has the same receiver front end as the FTDX10 receiver and will have similar capability which ranks highest on the Sherwood list. The agenda for the 10 April QRP Chat: Ernie to do a short introduction and acknowledge any new folks to the Zoom chat. The topic for next week will be an open forum. During the open forum anyone can take the floor. We will go one by one until all have had a chance to have the floor. Files, pictures and presentations can be shared if you have any. Please try to stay muted when someone has the floor. Thanks Ed AB8DF

Updated (and final) Version of T41 book 3
All: Al and I have just updated the 3rd edition T41 book. We moved the calibration info from Appendix C to its own chapter (20). The expanded instructions and new software make T41 calibration much easier. We have also updated the narrative in numerous places and have concentrated discussions on the V12.6 release where those changes are important. Some of you are asking yourself: Do I need to buy this update. Truthfully, if you already own the 3rd edition, we would say no. Most of the important changes are discussed on the web site and photos and schematics are available there, too. On the other hand, this is the last change we will be making to this book. Al and I have been at this for almost 7 years now and we're getting a little burned out. For that reason, we are turning this site over to Oliver King, KI3P, and Dr. Bill Schmidt, K9HZ. Al and I will continue to be active relative to the T41, but will leave the details to Oliver and Bill. If you do want the final version of the book, its new cover looks like this: The book is actually available now, but the Amazon ad will not reflect the new cover for about 10 more days. (If you order now, it will be the new version.) If you are attending the FDIM conference this May (coincides with Dayton Hamvention and the conference hotel is about 10 miles away), Al and I will be selling autographed copies on Thursday night (May 15th) at the conference hotel starting around 8PM. We have reduced the price of the autographed copies from $12,500 to $40...which is a deal and less than the Amazon price! If you have a previous copy of the book, bring it along and we will be happy to sign it. This has been a fun project and we want to thanks the hundreds of people have contributed to its improvement over time. We hope that continues long after Al and I are gone. 72, Jack Purdum, W8TEE Al Peter, AC8GY

matching 6 m 2 element Yagi 8
I am building a 6 m 2 el Yagi dK7ZB design and it is matched with a transformer made from 75 Ohm coax. 2 stubs of 1/4 Lambda in parallel. I tohought I could put a 28 Ohm resistor replacing the radiator ?and then have 50 Ohms on the Nano VNA at 50 Mhz resonnance. But that is not, what I see. Resonance is 37.8 Mhz at 47 Ohms resitance . At 50 Mhz resistance would be 38 Ohms and SWR 1,4. Prior to that I had mesured the coax with a velocity factor of 1 and could calculate a Velocity factor of 0,63 for the cable which is an unknown TV cable. Then calculated the lenth with that VF so I thought I should not be too far of. Any suggestions ? https://www.qsl.net/dk7zb/start1.htm Marin DK3 UW

AX1 31
Doug-I¡¯ve built a number short loaded verticals including your design a few years ago at Pacificon. And it works fine. But AX1 is a much smaller form factor and is very ruggedly built. No home brew vertical antenna is small enough to fit in my LowPro 60 case with my KX2 and all the accessories. I¡¯ve traveled around the world and hiked numerous summits with this one bag station since 2016. I¡¯ll post a picture here. I have the radio, spare battery, headphones,Begali Adventure paddle, log book, the AX1 and whip and the AEX1 for 30 and 40M coverage, bipod and tripod mounts (bipod attaches AX1 directly to the KX2 BNC) and necessary counterpoises plus a 25 foot 26 gauge wire for a random end fed if needed. It would be extremely difficult to replicate the small format and functionality of the AX1/AEX1 as a homebrewer that would fit in a small bag with all of the other components. One very small bag-and now with the KH1 I actually have an even smaller option -the AX1 is built into the radio and I can be on the air in less than a minute. I got a real kick out of seeing Hiroki¡¯s (AH6CY) homebrew version of the KH1 at Pacificon last year, but I¡¯d never take it on a plane or throw it in a backpack for a hike. You get what you pay for. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions. Details: Date - March 31 2025 Time - 09:00 EDT 13:00 UTC Band - 20 Meters How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF. That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO. Reply to this email if you have questions. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR CW IS Ed AB8DF

Pete WK8S Ed AB8DF Ernie NE3TE Stan WB8QJZ Tom WW8LA Casey KC9IH Jacob N3JU Stuart M0SGV John K4XNY Pete shared his recent experiences with a POTA PERformer vertical antenna. He went to a local park and took a bunch of pictures. He was doing WSPR testing and showed a report from WSPRNet. His results were good and he is convinced that the elevated radials greatly improve the vertical antenna performance. Ernie mentioned that Buddipole uses one elevated radial and recommends going to the Buddipole web site. K6ARK has videos on different ways to connect the radial wires. Steppir has information on elevated radials on their web site. https://whiteriverradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/POTA-PERformer-Antenna-by-KJ6ER-2023-03-1-1.pdf Michael KB9VBR WI POTA Videos and J-Pole Antenna Sales https://www.qrz.com/db/KJ6ER KJ6ER - PERformer, Challenger and Dominatorportable video https://www.buddipole.com/antennas.html https://consumer.steppir.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Radial-Systems-for-Elevated-and-Ground-Mounted-Antennas-2.2-12_2018.pdf The agenda for the 03 April QRP Chat: Ernie to do a short introduction and acknowledge any new folks to the Zoom chat. AX1 - Collapsible Whips 11
The Chameleon whips are built pretty well at the bottom. The early MFJ whips were quite fragile, but the later ones were much better. The Chameleons are still built better than the MFJ items.............. 73 de Lee KX4TT On Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at 06:39:40 PM EDT, MIKE N6ZW via groups.io <n6zw@...> wrote: Those are the same that MFJ used to sell before they went closed their doors. I use one for several HB antennas and it works very well alone. You can even base load one easily. 73, Mike n6zw
